Flags, Fireworks and Almost Fourth of July

(Edited)

It is tradition. It started in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on July 4, 1777, during the celebration of the first Independence Day. The cannon was fired thirteen times for the thirteen colonies and thirteen fireworks were set off. To this day, a fireworks display is used to celebrate national prosperity and patriotism.

The fireworks were on display last night! Not downtown, but, right in the neighborhood. Usually, it is downtown first and the neighborhood second. Work schedules and rain skirting the area made it an easy decision. There were many celebrations last night and I suppose there will be many more tonight. Did you see any last night? Show me a picture!!

Today is a #BeautifulSunday by @Ace108, where we share our day in the most possibly beautiful way that we can. It is a great day for taking a deep breath and inhaling life! I am having the best of days, a definite #SublimeSunday in the making, by the Meister of my morning, @c0ff33a. I do love my @c0ff33 and he likes eclectic! A definite match, made in heaven. I want to thank @ace108 and @c0ff33a for hosting these fun challenges! Check them out!

I go downtown DC, Arlington National Cemetery or Iwo Jima, also known as the Marine War Memorial, which is located right outside the gates of Joint Base Myer Henderson Hall Garrison Headquarters. Arlington is right there to make that simpler. To me, it is one of the best places to get nice shots. You are overlooking the city, so you can incorporate the memorial, the Capitol Building, and even the Washington Memorial, which I caught in the shot above. I wasn't trying to get anything in this shot except to compare the size of the Iwo Jima Memorial to people. It's not a local secret anymore, so be prepared for a large crowd.

When it was raised at Iwo Jima, it was a symbol of victory. During the protests of Vietnam, it was lit on fire. Politicians have tried to wrap themselves up in it to show their colors, although, with a nation so deeply divided at the moment, nobody wants to claim the flag as their own. I have said this before because I believe it to be true.

Shame on you, America. What has happened to you? Some days I get up and don't recognize you. What is going on with my red, white, and blue? Where is the patriotism that was oozing out of our veins just a short few years ago? In times of a real crisis, it is what unites us. But guess what? We don't need a disaster to come together. United we stand.

I get all wrapped up in my patriotism, so you will have to forgive me. I love my country, perhaps too much at times. Do you really think you can love your country too much? To be clear, not a crazy kind of love. Just healthy respect, honor, and dedication to making it a place that we are proud of, educating our children, and using all of our resources properly. So much more. But don't we all have the same dreams? No matter where you live?

They are shot into the air, bursting an explosion of colors, with no restraint, just letting the elaborateness fade into its glory. The performance was duplicated again and again until it was no more.

Did you see any fireworks yet? If you did, were pictures taken? Show me a shot! You know you want to! And just because it is a seemingly #SublimeSunday, I give you a flower, to color your world. #alwaysaflower If you are shooting off fireworks this holiday, please be careful of yourself and watch out for others. Have a wonderful celebration! And just like that, this show is over! Come back tomorrow and we will do it again.

All I have are my words, armed in my mind, written in pen, stand by stand. Oh, yes. Still by hand. It has a different feel. Altered not by keys, backspace, and delete, I write, erase, tear it to pieces and start all over again. And again.

It’s my way. I walk out to the deep end of the page and dive right in.

Our Flag

She waves for my attention,
So free upon the breeze.
The sun reflects her stars and stripes,
As proud as she can be.

She tells a tale of people lost,
Who came to find their way
And carried on through every loss,
To bring us here today.

She reminds me of the brave who fought
To keep our country strong
And shouts at me of victories
To right egregious wrongs.

She whispers to our children
Of all this country has to give
And begs that they stand up for her
And give thanks for how they live.

She cries to me of apathy,
Of prejudice and hate,
Of disrespect for what she stands,
And a Constitution we forsake.

She demands that I acknowledge her
And what she means to me
And dares me to imagine life
If she should cease to be.

And still in Glory she unfurls
And gives me hope again
For a people reunited,
And a country on the mend.

So each time I see her wave at me,
I'll stop and gaze above
And take a moment to respect
This country that I love.

Happy Independence Day! I hope you have a good one.

I didn't realize how the tradition of fireworks came about, that's very interesting.

Thank you! I'm starting early! :) I learn more stuff when I am looking up something else, although this was taught in school. :)

It has been pretty nice so far, but, a tiny bit of unneeded cloud cover. I am sure it will blow over.

Hi, @leaky20 !! I hope your day is going well!

Thanks, Sam @mcsamm The holiday is, but, the jury is out on the fireworks as they can cause so much damage.

The intent was for celebration, but, every year... more and more get hurt. Thanks for stopping by and leaving your words! Have a great Sunday!

A healthy does of patriotism is probably needed at this time, given the state of things! I know how that feels .. I love Australia the same but there's many things about it I feel ashamed about too.

They were both amazing countries, they can get there again, with a little help from our friends.

I say to myself... this too shall pass.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving your words!

Thank you for this Denise, I find history fascinating, and having spent a few 4ths on your side of the pond, just really think of it as a fireworks and hot dog day! It is great to get some background:)
Oh yes happy independence day for tomorrow.

:) We are an uber patriotic family. The year before Covid, we trekked back home to New England and went to Boston for the Reenactment and also to Philadelphia... I am with you on the history and it being fascinating! Don't you miss those hot dogs! LOL

Thank you for the wishes! I hope your day is awesome also!

Oh wow did you take part in the Reenactment, in my younger days I did some reenacting of old Scottihs battles, it was fun!
History is mind blowing, no matter what country.
Well hot dogs, I prefer British sausages hehe but we did have hot dogs today!
