A Painting from my drawing -The Three Sisters

The sisters were always together

Where one went so did the other two. Since they were children they would disappear together, holding hands in a circle they'd walk off into the woodland surrounding their home, in an odd sort of circular pattern.

They lived in their father's big walled estate on the hill and were always seen together , coming and going from the bricked walled garden into the woodland.

Some felt they represented the three stages of woman : The Maiden , The Mother, and the Crone
But they, none of them, aged nor seemed to change very much so such gossips were hard pressed to determine which would be crone and which mother or maiden.

Some felt it was a case of 2 evil and one poor sister, like poor ole' cinders
as the third sister was often dressed in the rough cloth of the townsfolk. But, alas, this theory did not hold either, for they were often seen together laughing and whispering to one another.

One might come upon them, unannounced and unseen in a glade in the wood and the three sisters would be sat about one another, perched on felled logs, plaiting wild feverfew into one another's braids.

There would often be a light or strange aura about them, as if they flashed in and out of color and reality, often causing hurried townsfolk or lost strangers to cross themselves and hurry onward.

Some had come upon them in their little walled garden off their Father's estate, having had business there, singing odd tunes in a language unknown in the village.

Never a nefarious deed was applied to the trio but none the less the townsfolk stayed clear and crossed themselves if they happened into their shops or the village green.
Mother's blocked up their son's eyes, in case they'd ever were persuaded to become suiters.

The three sisters lived on in their father's old estate, through wars and changes, staying themselves rather the same.
They say, even now, the three sisters live on in their father's old crumbling estate.

Altho the world is vastly different: townsfolk no longer exist in the same manner, no one crosses themselves having forgot the custom, and such variety of languages are the norm , that their strange secret language would not be detected.

Still, when some pass by the old house on the hill, now with the graffiti on the tall brick walled garden, if one looks in the cracks they'll see three ladies, of an indeterminate age, laughing, telling secrets and trailing long dresses clearly out of fashion through their lush garden. No gossip touches them anylonger, for the world has moved on.

And tho the woodland that once surrounded their father's estate has long since been cleared, old shopping trolleys littered about, or derelict old houses and buildings, burnt out or in ruin, they still wander to their 'spot' singing and plaiting flowers in hair.

They know that Time is a circle and it will come back around so they sing and wait and enjoy the company of one another; The Three Sisters

I hope you enjoyed the tale of my drawing. It started out as a black and white ink in my black and white series.

In fact in this iteration I made it into an #nft on Makersplace

However I have been having some fun this month in the studio playing with coloring some of my black and white drawings.

28marchHive2.jpg
I started by going from black to deep rich brown and playing with building up color

28marchHive3.jpg
I wanted to bring the first bit of color equally around the composition for balance

Using flat solid color first then dashing and splashing a deeper tone of the same hue over that.

Next adding a secondary complimentary color of forest green

And onward from there to here:

Of course it's fun to play with variations of these colors

Never easy to decide upon one final color but why only one? Like a box of sweets the colors can be many and varied and the fun of it keeps me amused in the studio for some time, probably far too much time.

Thank you for indulging me in one of my stories. Tho this piece had been drawn and created previously adding color and playing with tones this week has made it a new piece for me and of course the story of the three ladies took on a new version than that of when I first created them in simple black and white.

I think one of the most fun bits of being an artist for me is the story whenever I do any sketch or drawing whether it will become a decorative bit of flower and animal or a composition piece grounded in historical perspective, I have the story of it running through my head.

I think the painting of the thing is like sitting down at the typewriter or taking up the pen and paper and writing out their story Of course I too, sometimes, do write down their story in bits and bobs in the edges of my journals.

I hope you find a moment in your day to indulge in your passions and can find a quiet moment of peace in our current upheaval world.
