Blessed Easter Sunday/ Monday. Yesterday we had the first BBQ of the year, the weather was supposed to be warm but it was a bit chilly out. Nonetheless, we had a grilling good time.

First thing in the morning, we went to a socializing event for our twins. It is put on by the PTA and new students get to interact with the older ones and themselves while the parents stand there looking antisocial 😄. It is funny how much adults could learn from kids. They played games and won snack prizes, eventual the parents started socializing too 😆. The pic below was of a cultural band playing at the event.

On to the BBQ

A bunch of us gathered for our first BBQ of the year but it most certainly won’t be our last. The first thing to go on the grill was some Yakitori ( chicken on a stick ) this was a big hit with the kids and I made sure to keep them coming. For some reason at Japanese BBqs, people like to hold back.

Of course it wouldn't be a BBQ without the jerk chicken. But let me tell you what always happens, we prepare way less than there is demand for. The reason, my wife always says : "We don't need to bring so much, there will be other meats". Then when the Jerk chicken is finished in less than 30 seconds and everyone says: "Why did you make so little, next time please make more". 😩

We even had some fish on the grill, not my favorite thing to do mixing the meat kind with the seafood kind on the grill. I suggested putting the fish in foil wrap for a all round cooking but nobody listens. With grilling, if you want things done, you gotta do it yourself, no suggestions.

The kids had a blast catching cray fish in a nearby pond and riding bikes. This area is a recently developed one and not too many cars pass by. Interestingly, the house developer for the area bought up most of the land here years ago and then sold it to those who wanted to build houses. They have to use the same construction company/house developer to build their houses.

Meanwhile the adults where grilling and chilling. We all took turns grilling but the task was mainly left to another dude at myself...or should I say we willingly took the role as we like to grill. Look at the flame go as my wife tries to tame it 😆.

For grilling Jerk chicken, it is best to have a grill with a cover for the smoking, but you can always improvise by covering it with foil and using stones to hold it in place if it is windy. In the this case, I used these chopsticks. These were our designated BBQ tongs for the day as well.

More fish, more chicken more chilling. A lot of food was left over but it is best to leave the host with fridge full of meat they can cook later. all in all it was a good day and I do look forward to some more grilling and chilling. Have a good week everyone.

It is very rare and they have a hard time as tryouts and veggies cost way more than meet... well that is everywhere 😂. The only veggies we had that day were mushrooms and green 🫑.

Fish should be in foil... or at least that's what we do and we also calculate more meat/chicken, because if there's leftover we can distribute it between the participants and of course leave for the host.

Yup! More even cooking and doesn't mix with the meat. I'll show them how it's done next time. That last fish in the picture basically went to waste, nobody wanted to eat it…. And it was mackerel so not the greatest taste on the grill 😂.

Yup, that makes way more sense. Get it all grilled and share it up if any is left.

I think we smoke mackerel here in Suriname and then cook a dish with the smoked fish, but not sure 😅.
