The film has a lot of talent involved in it, not only the 2 main actors are extremely popular and talented, but the director as well, as I will mention in a few paragraphs below.
I had no idea this story was based on real-life events, and that made it even more entertaining for me. I find it almost incredible this type of dramatic event, which I am sure was quite common in that era, got so popular that even a movie with top-notch talent was created nowadays.
I also found it a bit educative to know some of the rules and customs of that era, and how were problems dealt with every time they appeared.
What was the movie about?
The movie is mostly about the squires Carrouges and Le Gris, 2 men who were not only friends for a long time, but also fought together many times in different battles. However, they had 2 completely opposite mentalities.
Carrouges was a traditional man with authentic values and beliefs. Extremely faithful to the causes he supported, and absolutely trustworthy. A bit stubborn but not corrupt or anything like that.
Le Gris, on the other hand, also had some principles but he was much more prone to developing corruption and getting used to benefiting himself by doing reprehensible things. He also had more social skills which allowed him to develop key friendships during his life and gain some benefit from this.
These 2 personalities would eventually begin to clash, as Le Gris finds himself favored over Carrouges, in a way that Carrouges considers to be illegal and unjust. The world is a very corrupt place, and this makes Carrouge extremely furious and frustrated but he doesn't lose his mind and continues on with his life. Le Gris, on the other hand, simply takes advantage of it thanks to his adaptive personality with no moral compass.
La película tiene mucho talento involucrado, no solo los 2 actores principales son extremadamente populares y talentosos, sino que el director también lo es como mencionaré un unos párrafos más abajo.
No tenía idea de que esta historia estaba basada en hechos de la vida real, y eso la hizo aún más entretenida para mí. Me parece casi increíble que este tipo de hechos dramáticos, que estoy seguro que eran bastante comunes en esa época, se hayan vuelto tan populares que incluso se haya creado una película con un talento de primer nivel en la actualidad.
También me resultó un poco educativo conocer algunas de las reglas y costumbres de esa época, y cómo se trataban los problemas cada vez que aparecían.
¿De qué trataba la película?
La película trata principalmente sobre los escuderos Carrouges y Le Gris, 2 hombres que no solo fueron amigos durante mucho tiempo, sino que también lucharon juntos muchas veces en diferentes batallas. Sin embargo, tenían 2 mentalidades completamente opuestas.
Carrouges era un hombre tradicional con auténticos valores y creencias. Extremadamente fiel a las causas que apoyó, y absolutamente digno de confianza. Un poco terco pero no corrupto ni nada por el estilo.
Le Gris, por su parte, también tenía algunos principios pero era mucho más propenso a desarrollar corrupción, y a acostumbrarse a beneficiarse haciendo cosas reprochables. También tenía más habilidades sociales que le permitieron desarrollar amistades claves durante su vida y obtener algún beneficio de esto.
Estas 2 personalidades eventualmente comenzarían a chocar, ya que Le Gris se ve favorecido sobre Carrouges, de una manera que Carrouges considera ilegal e injusta. El mundo es un lugar muy corrupto, y esto hace que Carrouge esté extremadamente furioso y frustrado, pero no pierde la cabeza y continúa con su vida. Le Gris, por otro lado, simplemente lo aprovecha gracias a su personalidad adaptativa sin brújula moral.
The film in a genial way provides the viewer with the same events but in 3 different versions, each of them corresponding to the "truth" of each of the main characters. We will see slight changes from one version of the "truth" to another one, and this was such as nice touch by the director, I really love it, and made the film even more entertaining.
The film constantly shows examples of the customs of that era, and that was also interesting for me to watch. It had a bigger than average length, but given the way the story is presented, and thanks to the awesome performance from the cast, it didn't feel like it lasted too long.
Main names associated with the film
The director of the film was Ridley Scott, a very talented man who is constantly directed excellent films. Some of his recent examples are House of Gucci, Raised by Wolves, and Alien: Covenant.
The film had 3 writers, one of them being Nicole Holofcener. She has previously worked in several productions such as The Land of Steady Habits, Every Secret Thing, and Friends with Money.
Ben Affleck was another one of the writers and he also worked as a secondary character in the story. I am sure we all know about films with Ben Affleck, but his writing jobs might be less popular. Some other productions where he worked as a writer were Live by Night, The Town, and Gone Baby Gone. The character he plays in the film is a count, a constant drunk and sex addict man.
Matt Damon is in a similar situation, he worked both as an actor playing one of the main roles, and also as a writer but his writing skills are probably less popular. A couple of examples of productions where Damon worked as a writer are Promised Land, Gerry, and Good Will Hunting. Damon plays Jean de Carrouges, a man who is extremely faithful, has strong values and principles, and is, therefore, a bit incompatible with the corruption, hypocrisy, and lies that surround him.
Adam Driver plays another one of the main characters, called Jacques Le Gris. He was a friend of Carrouges but some irremediable differences will begin to appear between them, which will end up causing an important conflict. We can also see this actor in other great films such as House of Gucci, Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker, and BlacKkKlansman.
La película brinda al espectador los mismos eventos pero en 3 versiones diferentes locual fue bastante genial, cada una de las cuales corresponde a la "verdad" de cada uno de los personajes principales. Veremos pequeñas oportunidades de una versión de la "verdad" a otra, y este fue un buen toque del director, realmente me encantó e hizo que la película fuera aún más entretenida.
La película muestra constantemente ejemplos de las costumbres de esa época, y eso también me resultó interesante de ver. Tuvo una duración mayor a la media, pero dada la forma en que se presenta la historia, y gracias a la increíble actuación del elenco, no pareció que durara demasiado.

How were the performance from the cast and the scenery?
The performance from the 3 main cast members was excellently done, however, Ben Affleck provided a performance that didn't entirely convince me. I believe his character was too exaggerated, too impractical with a very high lack of discipline. It is understandable that people with power can get carried away, especially during that era, but I just didn't find his character very authentic.
Damon and Driver, on the other hand, provided top-notch performances, and the movie, despite lasting 2.5 hours, didn't feel either slow or boring as I was worried about before watching it, this was mainly thanks to the performance of these 2 actors. Comer was also very good in her role.
The scenery was as expected, very well-done, and I loved how the director decided to portray the 3 different truths of what happened, according to each of the 3 main characters' perspectives. This was a genius touch and made the film even more enjoyable.
Final thoughts
The Last Duel was a very enjoyable film about a drama from the 1300s and about how this type of problem was dealt with, especially when involving individuals holding some importance in the kingdom.
The customs of that era might be surprising for many people today, and some of the dialogue could even be a bit shocking given the natural way in which the characters say it.
All in all, I think this film can be enjoyable for many people, however, I do recommend being in the mood for a lengthy drama before giving it a watch. This film requires enough time to tell the story in the way the director wanted, and its length is not only justified, but it didn't even feel overstretched.
¿Cómo fue la actuación del elenco y el escenario?
La actuación de los 3 miembros principales del reparto estuvo excelentemente realizada, sin embargo, Ben Affleck brindó una actuación que no me convenció del todo. Creo que su carácter era demasiado exagerado, demasiado poco práctico con una falta de disciplina muy alta. Reflexiones finales
The Last Duel fue una película muy disfrutable sobre un drama del siglo XIII y sobre cómo se trataba este tipo de problemas, especialmente cuando se trata de personas que tenían alguna importancia en el reino.
Las costumbres de esa época pueden ser sorprendentes para muchas personas hoy en día, y algunos de los diálogos pueden incluso ser un poco impactantes dada la forma natural en que los personajes lo dicen.
Considerándolo todo, creo que esta película puede ser disfrutable para muchas personas, sin embargo, recomiendo estar de humor para un drama largo antes de verla. Esta película requiere suficiente tiempo para contar la historia de la manera que el director quería, y su duración no solo está justificada, sino que ni siquiera se sintió demasiado estirada.

I loved the structure of the film, telling it through the three points of view of each character. The actors were great, and the battle at the end is quite explicit. It was one of my favorite films of last year, it deserves more recognition.
Agree, the subtle differences when the same events are being watched from the POV of another character was a genius decision and made the movie worth paying a lot of attention to. The battle was nicely done for sure and I was rooting for Damon's character of course. I don't think it has more recognition because maybe many people believe it will be a long, slow and boring film, but I think it was a bit special and easily worth watching.
