Afghanistan: UK soldiers killed unarmed civilians
Bbc in a scoop, reported that the most important special military body in the United Kingdom: the Special Air Service (Sas) committed atrocities. After examining hundreds of pages of the organization’s reports and accounts relating to the 2010-11 war in Afghanistan, British forces killed dozens of prisoners, detainees and unarmed men in the course of the conflict.
According to what was reported by the BBC Panorama scoop, a single squadron would have been the author of 54 murders, contrary to the law of war, in the span of just six months. Indeed, with the knowledge of the facts by even the highest management of the organization. The former head of the SAS, General Sir Mark Carleton-Smith, in fact, was immediately aware of these illegal killings. Yet, he would have decided to leave the perpetrators unpunished and not to send the relevant evidence to the Royal Military Police, as established by protocol.
The sensational willful omissions of the general and the leading members of the SAS also lead to discussion under another relevant aspect: they were deliberate war crimes, committed autonomously and independently by the soldiers, or real commands deriving from the tall? The first rumors seem to point towards the first road. It is no coincidence that the BBC has certified the presence of internal emails that would show how the officers, at the highest levels of the Special Forces, were aware of the concern for possible illegal killings. Despite everything, after more than a decade, the evidence was never transmitted to the police, even after the latter's investigations began.
According to the account of numerous witnesses, who operated in Afghanistan in those two years, the Special Forces acted mainly through night raids. Many of them competed to see who killed the most, and then disguised the crime scene, making it appear that it was a fire fight with enemy military forces. The SAS, again according to the testimonies reported, would have acted through the technique of weapons dropped, or placed near the bodies of corpses precisely to stage a conflict that never took place, and therefore managing to cover up the crime of war.
If the scenario were to be definitively confirmed, it would be one of the biggest scandals of the special organization. Even if the confidence of the leaders of the British government continues to remain unchanged.
