A hobby passed down to me by my father. Weekend-Engagement writing prompts: WEEK 135

(Edited)

Hi friends, it's a pleasure to participate in this first #weekend-engagement edition of the year organised by @galenkp.

Weekend-Engagement: WEEK 135

The theme I have chosen from those proposed by @galenkp is:

Happy feels on the weekend

If I have to choose one of the activities I do on the weekends that makes me happy, it is actually going fishing in the sea.

The origins

I have my father to thank for the origins of this hobby. I remember as a child coming home from school running to my house and asking my mother where my father was and she would answer me almost every day that he was on the beach fishing, even on some days when it made the most sense to stay at home because of the rain and the cold. But he was passionate about recreational fishing, both fishing with a rod from the beach and equipped with a rod baited with crabs to catch octopus.

The photograph I show you below is of an octopus I caught with him, but in this case in 2012.

A hobby passed down from father to son

When I became a teenager, I started to go fishing with him on weekends and summer holidays. Especially on Saturday and Sunday mornings, when there was a big tide to catch octopus. I remember the day I caught an octopus weighing 6 kg, but unfortunately in the 90s there were no mobile phones to take a camera with me and the family camera at that time did not work, so all that remains is the memory.

Years later, during my time at university, as I was studying away from my family, I gradually abandoned this love of fishing, but a spark of that illusion of going fishing with my father always remained inside me.

As a result of this spark of enthusiasm for fishing, once I finished my university studies, I started working and I had my own vehicle that allowed me to come to my parents' house at weekends, which allowed me to re-engage in the world of fishing and at the same time strengthen a special bond with my father. I remember that at this time, as my father was undergoing hip surgery, the type of fishing we did was mainly angling from Castello beach, which is one kilometre away from the family home and which I am showing you a photograph taken this morning from the viewpoint and others from the beach.

I remember with special affection the day we caught an excellent maragota weighing 2 kg and that day I already had a smartphone with which to take the obligatory photo. This catch was made with a fishing rod, but due to the strength of the fish, I needed my father's wise advice and his help holding the nylon to get the wonderful specimen out of the water.

Obviously, that day we caught another maragota of a smaller size and the next day my mother prepared the fish in the oven.

A spiritual connection with my father today

After my father passed away in 2015 from a treacherous lung cancer, I was for a couple of years that I didn't want to go fishing. Mainly because at the time I felt a great lack in my heart. However, when I overcame the internal mourning, I started again to go fishing on weekends to some of the places where I fished with my father, so that this hobby of fishing makes me feel very happy to get to be spiritually connected to my father, either on days when there are no catches and an even more special connection when there are catches like the ones I show you below.

A final thought

Fishing is not only the weekend activity that makes me happiest, but the one that allows me to connect with my beloved and always remembered father.

Best wishes to all the community, have a good weekend. I hope to have a good rest tonight and go fishing tomorrow.

At first I had only intended to talk about my hobby. But I thought it was a tribute to him to write about the origin of my weekend hobby. It was a very good exercise to remember him even more.

Best regards

So sorry that your father is late but am so happy that after mourning him you didn't let go fishing as this will always bring back good memories of your father.

Remembering our loved ones keep us moving, especially the good time and encouragement we might have received from them.
Personally I know that I will see my loved ones again and that gives me happiness

This hobby is passed down for generation. For some this is a hobby, for others is a way of earning their bread. It's nice to see you're still fishing.

In my case it is a hobby.

But in my environment there are several professional fishermen with their small boats to go out and earn their daily wage.

The way you spend your weekend is indeed fruitful because it would benefit almost everyone.
I'm seeing this species of fish for the first time, I can't help but imagine how they test.
I'm so sorry about your lost good a thing you both had fun memories together and am glad you held that close to your heart.

Thank you

The fish in the first picture are very tasty.

The ones in the last picture are tasty but they have more bones and are more tedious to eat.

The things that are inherited from the parents are the best. Fishing seems rewarding to me, not only because of the prize you get but also because of how relaxing it is, at least for me, who have only fished twice in my life. It was a pleasant experience.

It is a moment where one finds oneself in the middle of nature. It relaxes me a lot.

Though your dad is dead, yet, his memory lives in you. He taught you a skill which now serves as a hubby for you. Keep his memory alive!

Am salivating over here oo. It's like am missing something great. The fishes.

Wow! Such a good weekend experience. Bountiful catch and all are fresh.

Your father is a good model. I'm pretty sure he is looking at you happily doing the things that you usually do when he is still alive. It reminds me of my father too who left us in 2016. He is a great father to us too.

I'm glad reading your blog, I was enjoying viewing your photography.

Thank you for your comment.

Learning from the good legacy of a parent is beautiful.

And you are right that catching your own fish is always more fun and delicious.

Hi there! It's good that you've overcome the remise of your father and now you're back to the waters once again. It's a normal cycle nobody can escape so it's best to be reminded of the good old days just like what you're doing now. Hmmm this gives me something to think of as well. I lost two kids aged 18 way back 1997 & 32 last 2012. They're my eldest daughter and next to her. I've given all my best that I asked Him "WHY?". Sending your own kid to her/his final resting place seems not right at all. It should be the other way around! But who am I to question God's will? All I need to do is thank Him for the borrowed life He had bestowed upon them. The living moves on....

How cute is your post! It's good that you still practice that activity you did with your father ❤️, and that makes you remember it and fills you with happiness. Good fishing!. Happy weekend ☀️.

Thank you for your comment.

This afternoon I hope to be able to go fishing for a while on the beach if the wind dies down a bit. It has been very windy and that makes it very difficult to fish from the beach.

One of the most beautiful gestures a father can leave. It is to leave pleasant memories. You have had a very good father, you have been a blessing. Friend, you have to remember him with affection.
