LOH Contest #137: Water shortage in Venezuela and its consequences [ENG/ESP]
Hello to everyone in the Ladies of Hive community! Today I am joining the contest of the week #137. As always, this is my entry to participate in it. So I will be answering question number two which reads as follows:
Water is life and it is also a non-renewable resource. There are countries where access to water is very limited, while in other countries, water is wasted. Tell us how aware you are of this future problem (water scarcity) and how you manage this valuable resource.
¡Hola a todos en la comunidad de Ladies of Hive! El día de hoy me uno al concurso de la semana #137. Cómo siempre, está es mi entrada para participar en él. Así que estaré respondiendo a la pregunta número dos que dice lo siguiente:
El agua es vida y también es un recurso no renovable. Hay países donde el acceso al agua es muy limitado, mientras que en otros países, el agua se desperdicia. Díganos qué tan consciente está de este problema futuro (escasez de agua) y cómo gestiona este valioso recurso.
I have lived in Venezuela all my life and like many in my country, I have never experienced what it is like to have quality basic services. Maybe in times past the issue has been different but right now I have not seen anything different: frequent power outages, scarce moments of running water, even problems of clogged drains (especially in the rainy season) and internet problems. All of this has made it normal for me to live in scarcity, even if the resources are there.
I do not want to fall into a political, economic or administrative discourse, but that influences what I have to say about the most important resource of our planet: water. Here, we, the common citizens of Venezuela, have learned to manage this resource in order to have it in our homes. For example, in Valencia and Naguanagua (where I used to live), the water service was activated after a certain hour, 6am and 6pm. So only at those hours we could collect water in the tanks.
He vivido en Venezuela durante toda mi vida y cómo muchos en mi país, nunca he experimentado lo que es tener servicios básicos de calidad. Quizás en tiempos pasados la cuestión haya sido diferente pero ahora mismo no he visto otra cosa diferente: apagones de electricidad frecuentes, escasos momentos de agua corriente, incluso problemas de drenajes tapados (sobre todo en las épocas lluvias) y problemas de internet. Todo eso ha hecho que en cierta forma para mí, sea normal vivir en escasez aunque estén los recursos.
No quiero caer en un discurso de tipo político, económico o administrativo pero eso influye en lo que tengo por decir al respecto del recurso más importante de nuestro planeta: el agua. Aquí, nosotros los ciudadanos comunes de Venezuela, hemos aprendido a gestionar este recurso para poder tenerla en nuestros hogares. Por ejemplo, en Valencia y Naguanagua (dónde solía vivir), el servicio de agua se activaba a partir de cierta hora, las 6am y las 6pm. Por lo que solo a esas horas podíamos recoger agua en los tanques.
There were days when there was no water and we had to save a lot more. It was hard because many times we had to deprive ourselves of our needs, the laundry piled up, we could only bathe once a day, as well as not being able to clean the house properly, not being able to bathe the pets and looking for drinking water to clean the kitchen. Living in a country with these difficulties is exhausting.
Of course, there are those who find other solutions to have water, such as making subway wells. But the reality is that not everyone has the economic means to make this expense, i.e. private wells. In addition, when these wells are made, there is no measure to evaluate if water can actually be withdrawn in that place. Most of them are done illegally and have consequences: water degradation, soil subsidence, saltwater intrusion, and final depletion of the resource. But I understand the reasons and if these wells did not exist, the water shortage would be worse.
Había días en los que no llegaba el agua y debíamos ahorrar muchísimo más. Era duro pues muchas veces nos tuvimos que privar de nuestras necesidades, la ropa para lavar se acumulaba, solo podíamos bañarnos una vez al día, al igual que no poder limpiar la casa como correspondía, no poder bañar a las mascotas y buscar agua potable para limpiar los trastos de la cocina. Vivir en un país con estas dificultades es agotador.
Por supuesto, hay quienes encuentran otras soluciones para tener agua, cómo hacer pozos subterráneos. Pero la realidad es que no todos tienen la posibilidad económica para hacer ese gasto, es decir, pozos privados. Además, cuando se hacen estos pozos no existe ninguna medida para evaluar sí efectivamente se puede sustraer agua en dicho lugar. La mayoría son realizado de forma ilegal y traen consecuencias: degradación del agua, hundimiento del suelo, intrusión del agua salada y agotamiento final del recurso. Pero yo comprendo los motivos y de no existir estos pozos, el desabastecimiento de agua sería peor.
Whether you live in an area where there are better services or not, I think it is incumbent upon all of us to think that water is limited and possibly the changes in our planet are irreversible. Although I know that the most lethal damage has been caused by large industries, mining, resource extraction, partially tourism and a host of other factors. So, I celebrate when I have water in my home because I am happy to enjoy it (although that should be the norm). However, that doesn't mean we should act mindlessly and waste water just because we have it. That is a miserable attitude. I only know that here, in Venezuela and other countries like mine, it is almost mandatory to do what I have mentioned above, otherwise we would most likely (if not certainly) not have water to supply our homes. Ya sea si se vive en una zona dónde hay mejores servicios o no, creo que a todos nos corresponder pensar en que el agua es limitada y posiblemente los cambios en nuestro planeta sean irreversibles. Aunque sé que el daño más letal lo han causado las grandes industrias, la minería, la extracción de recursos, parcialmente el turismo y un sin fin de otros factores. Así que, celebro cuando tengo agua en mí hogar porque soy dichosa de poder disfrutarla (aunque eso debería ser lo común). Sin embargo eso no quiere decir que debamos actuar de forma inconsciente y malgastar el agua solo porque la tenemos. Esa es una actitud miserable. Solo sé que aquí, en Venezuela y otros países cómo el mío es una cuestión casi obligatoria hacer lo que he comentado arriba, pues de no ser asi lo más probable (sino certero) es que no tendríamos agua para abastecer nuestros hogares. I live on the Pacific West coast of Canada and I can't imagine living without readily available water. It is abundant where I live and it's delivery has been reliable. But one day that may stop due to economic, political or even a natural event like an earthquake that we are often advised to prepare for.
Even in abundance fresh Water is still a valuable and should not be wasted.

And I don't even want to imagine how it would be in an emergency situation like an earthquake, surely that precaution will not be given to us. El agua fuente de vida, nos trae muchos contratiempos y como lo dices, los que mas consumen y desperdician agua son las fabricas. Cuando haya un compromiso por parte de los sectores económicos de una nación comenzaremos a ver cambios, antes solo queda adaptarnos y utilizar nuestro ingenio para tener a nuestro alcance el agua.

Pasar por tantas deficiencias de agua en nuestro país sin duda nos hace apreciarla aún más y como dices eso va con los otros servicios básicos como la luz.
Alegrarnos cuando llega el agua después de días sin ella, es algo que los extranjeros quizás no entiendan del todo. Tengo fe y espero que volvamos a tener calidad de vida como la teníamos antes.
