Next Blockbuster Game Title To Get NFTs Right?

With failed launches of big games and companies to get into NFTs and getting a huge blow back from their communities it begs the question if any of these platforms will ever get it right. That might change however with a upcoming MMO from Ultima Online! Let's take a look.

From the developers of the hit game Ultima Online released way back in September of 1997 and still going strong the developers Richard Garriott and Todd Porter and starting to ponder what a game might look like if you owned land, buildings and other items in a game that was like Ultima.

Game Assets Have Always Been A Thing

When you think about it game assets have been around for a long time but many have been banned due to bots and other abuse within the systems including dreaded taxes and the mess that all brings.

Think about it, every game you go in within days there are bots trying to sell you gold, silver or whatever the in game currency is constantly no matter how many preventive measures are in place. There's also account selling, weapons and item selling and of course in game markets that are constantly selling and buying of resources in the game.

The New Game

Richard Garriott and Todd Porter are now looking into building a brand new game with blockchain and NFT ownership in mind.

As per Garriotts response about why they are moving into this space it comes with this thinking and quote.

“And every time there was a major one of these upheavals, which is sort of like when a new console machine is shipped that is substantially more powerful than its predecessor. There’s basically a big race for all developers to figure out how to take advantage of all the bells and whistles that you can do with this new platform. And that tends to drive gaming, in my mind, back to relatively simple, first-person shooter-style gameplay that takes advantage of all the bells and whistles.”

I tend to fully agree with this. Whenever there is a new development in processor speed, ram capabilities, graphics cards and so forth there is a fundamental shift in gaming that happens where each developer races to see how to best implement it. I would even go as far as saying one of the most recent changes and one that will advance gaming is the updated version of Unreal engine which will bring graphics to gaming to an all new level. Well blockchain itself is one of those major fundamental changes which has only started to be explored and the potential there if done right is groundbreaking and will rock the world.

What This New MMO Might Look Like

While still on the drawing board we do have some sneak peaks into what exactly the game may look like for fundamentally be like.

Since the developers have a heavy background in Ultima we can expect much of the same thing there however they are pulling other inspiration from games such as Minecraft and Roblox which makes me feel like it would be more of a block type game interface. Don't expect ground breaking graphics in this title. However where it falls in graphics I believe the rich story and lore of the game is what's going to attract people and keep them around.

It will have a central map like mmo Ultimate online where you can buy lands with the introduction of something new that hasn't been done before in their titles called "adventure zones" which will host solo, teams and party adventures. This opens up the ability for people to build their own adventures which also might tie into land ownership.

The other reason I feel this will be a thing is their man focus is to give creative players the ability to build their own story in the game. Let's be honest there are some rather cool things that some players create and often times are better than the original and I think that's awesome! Now those people actully get to claim ownership of what they create while the developers build the general lore and story it can now be expanded by the players themselves giving more sense of ownership and more flexibility to create and build and that to me is a very powerful blend of what NFT and gaming phase two could look like.

I consider browser base games we currently have as phase 1 play2earn. Now we are moving into what I would consider PlayandOwn.

What are your thoughts on NFT gaming and ownership within games?

It looks like we will have a nice blockchain-based game from a veteran game developer team. I believe all gaming assets will turn into NFTs in 5-10 years when blockchain becomes an inseparable life of common people.

Glad to have such a great technology. Shotout to our beloved game Splinterlands ^^

I think it would be interesting and it would be the first actual blockchain MMORPG right? I wonder how things would work out.

There's a few other MMORPGs or well kind of which are on the blockchain but they primarily live on Wax at the moment. I think it would be really cool to have a solid team building a game like this. What I'd really love to see is the next diablo game launch a crypto market! I remember the marketplace for Diablo 3 it made that game so awesome then they removed it.

I'm kinda divided because at the same time I'd like to see blockchain gaming evolve to games where you must actively play instead of the ones we currently have that are full-idle or semi-idle, I also lack the time to play anything else so I prefer to stick to the latter.

But I think it's nice for the industry to see it developing in that direction.
