Basilica Cistern / Yerebatan Sarnıcı

Hello everyone, how are you? I hope everything is fine. It continues to rain intermittently in Istanbul. The weather is quite cold. Snow has been expected for a few days but it has not fallen yet. I can't go out much because the weather conditions are not favorable. I commute from home to work, from work to home.
In this post, I will talk about the Basilica Cistern that I visited recently.

Herkese merhaba, Nasılsınız? Umarım her şey yolundadır. İstanbul'da ara ara yağmur yağmaya devam ediyor. Hava oldukça soğuk. Birkaç gündür kar yağışı bekleniyor ancak henüz yağmadı. Hava şartları elverişli olmadığı için çok fazla dışarı çıkamıyorum. Evden işe, işten eve gidip geliyorum.

The Basilica cistern is located in Fatih. It has become the center of attention of many local and foreign people as it is at a central point. One of the reasons why it is crowded is perhaps because it is close to Hagia Sophia. I waited for about fifteen minutes to get inside and there was a queue of about ten meters in front of me. One thing I should mention is that you cannot enter here with a museum card. I paid 60 Turkish Lira as entrance fee, about 6 Hive.

Yerebatan sarnıcı Fatih'te bulunuyor. Konum olarak merkezi bir noktada olduğu yerli-yabancı birçok kişinin ilgi odağı olmuş durumda. Kalabalık olmasının nedenlerinden birisi de belki de Ayasofya'ya yakın olmasından dolayıdır. İçeriye girebilmek için yaklaşık on beş dakika bekledim. Önümde yaklaşık on metre kuyruk vardı. Belirtmem gereken bir hususta buraya müze kart ile giriş yapamıyorsunuz. Ben giriş ücreti olarak 60 Türk Lirası ödedim. Yaklaşık 6 Hive.

It resembles a very big cave inside. The reason why this cistern was built in the past years was to store water inside and to meet the need when there was a water shortage. Since it covers a large area, I think a large amount of water was stored. The idea is really logical, but there are some questions that I can't answer. The stored water necessarily waits here for a certain period of time. To what extent were the necessary hygienic measures taken in terms of health? I don't think there were water purifiers at that time, maybe they found a different solution, I don't know.

İçerisi çok büyük bir mağarayı andırıyor. Geçmiş yıllarda bu Sarnıcın yapılma nedeni, içeriye su depolayıp su sıkıntısı olduğu zamanlarda buradan ihtiyacı gidermekmiş. Geniş bir alanı kapladığı için yüksek miktarda su depolandığını düşünüyorum. Düşünce gerçekten çok mantıklı ancak aklıma takılan, cevaplayamadığım bazı sorular var. Depolanan su illaki burada belli bir süre bekliyor. Sağlık açısından gerekli hijyenik önlemler acaba ne ölçüde alınmıştır? O dönemlerde su arıtma cihazlarının olduğunu düşünmüyorum. Belki de farklı bir çözüm yolu bulmuşlardır, bilemiyorum.

As for the high pillars, there are many thick pillars inside. Apparently they are quite sturdy. What catches my attention is that people throw coins into the water in front of one of the columns. They are probably doing it to make a wish. I have come across the same thing in many places before. Frankly, it seems ridiculous to me and I think it is a superstitious belief. I don't know if it is a psychological relief.

Yüksek sütunlara gelecek olursak içeride çok sayıda kalın sütun bulunuyor. Görünüşe göre oldukça sağlamlar. Benim dikkatimi çeken ise bir tane sütunun önündeki suya insanlar bozuk para atıyor. Muhtemelen dilek tutmak için yapıyorlar. Daha önce birçok yerde aynı şeye denk geldim. Açıkçası bana saçma geliyor ve batıl bir inanç olduğunu düşünüyorum. Psikolojik olarak bir rahatlama varsa onu bilemem.

Since there is little lighting inside the cistern, it is necessary to walk carefully. It is especially useful to pay attention to the fact that the ground can be wet. Being partially dark also has different disadvantages. There are statues of different sizes inside. Naturally, since there is no lighting, people may experience fear when they first see them. I think it is better not to bring especially young children.

Sarnıcın içindeki ışıklandırma az olduğu için gezerken dikkatli yürümek gerekiyor. Özellikle zemin ıslak olabiliyor buna ayrıca dikkat etmekte fayda var. Kısmen karanlık olmasının farklı dezavantajları da var. İçeride farklı boyutlarda heykeller bulunuyor. Haliyle ışıklandırma olmadığı için insan ilk gördüğünde korku yaşayabilir. Özellikle küçük yaşlardaki çocukları getirmemekte fayda var diye düşünüyorum.

The lighting reflected in the water on the floor offers a different visual feast. Likewise, the lighting reflected on the ceiling is the same. Perhaps one of the reasons why the cistern attracts so much attention is these illuminations. I was impressed by the lighting in the photos I saw before I visited this place, so I was very curious.

Belki de sarnıcın bu denli ilgi çekmesinin nedenlerinden birisi de bu ışıklandırmalardır. Ben burayı gezmeden önce gördüğüm fotoğraflardaki ışıklandırmalardan etkilenmiştim bu yüzden bende büyük bir merak oluşmuştu.

I spent about half an hour inside the cistern. I couldn't stay too long because of the high humidity inside.

Sarnıcın içerisinde yaklaşık yarım saat zaman geçirdim. İçerideki nem oranı fazla olduğu için çok fazla duramadım.
