This is what i believe is the great black backed seagull, mistakenly called greater black backed seagull by some it is the largest member of the seagull family. It mainly breeds on the European and North American coasts lines.

Thank you @barski i thought the same i was quite surprised to see this type of seagull on my travels through California and i must say a great contest you have going here i just happen to stumble upon it now and i do think i am going to enjoy your awesome daily themes :))
