Kiwivine Trained!

I'm not sure if this more of a gardening or a DIY/house post... there is a moment when they sort of crossover a bit! Anyway, it is going in the garden section as it is really more to do with the garden instead of my poopy DIY skills! But hilariously enough, a parent of my wife's piano student commented on how handy I was around the house as I was doing all of this during their lesson... to which, my wife laughed and said that I was pretty useless with all of this stuff! And that is pretty true!

Anyway, the little project for today was to fix some training wire for the kiwifruit vines. We were going to have them grow around the wooden poles of the patio, but a more experienced gardener said that was a sure-fire way of ensuring that we would need to rebuild the patio in about five years! Apparently, the kiwifruit vines will grow quite strongly and they will just destroy the structure that they wind around.

So, he suggested a simple wire trainer to get it up to the top of the patio, and then as the plant matures, it would grow strong enough to support itself!

A simple ready made kit for a wire trainers/trellis... saved me having to find the bits and pieces myself... and a wire cutter, I didn't have one of those... and I now have a new tool to add to my growing collection of rarely used tools!

First up a shallow and thin drill hole... most people probably wouldn't need this, but I'm not that strong... so having a guide hole helps with keeping the screwed eyelets straight and all of that!

I had seen on a YouTube video this little trick of using a screwdriver to help screw the eyelet in! This is much better than what I normally would have done... which would have been a pair of pliers grabbing the end and using the leverage like that. This is much easier, and less damaging to the eyelet.

... and then the wire! I had really thought too far ahead, and as soon as the last tie was undone... the entire thing sprang out in my hand! Thankfully, no sharp edges... but I have to be more careful with these little coiled springs in the future!

Tied and wound... it is a bit of a rough job, but I haven't learnt how to do it better yet. I was able to tension the wire a bit by turning the eyelet... but the next time, I will have to think of a better way... or better still, watch a YouTube video for some tips and tricks!

Next step was to gently untangle the male kiwivine (the fastest growing one at the moment... and the reason for doing the job now instead of a few months later...) from the stakes that I had been using to train them. It was wrapped quite strongly around it already... so, it was a few minutes of gently unwrapping the twist, taking care not to snape the still growing vine!

... and there we go, the vine is now being encouraged to go up the wire! And it supports itself like this, I was worried that it would just fall straight back down... and more importantly, I didn't break or destroy anything structural! YAY!

Doesn't gardening and diy crossover a lot? Definitely feels like it when I'm watching nonsense happening outside XD

I don't do a lot in the garden

Yay for not destroying anything structural and the plant going up where it's supposed to? XD

I'm pretty happy that things are still standing and that there wasn't a serious disaster!
