Heatherbrae's Pies: Exeter, AUSTRALIA
Oh, that is an unfortunately ominous photo for the cover photo!
Anyway, a little write up about a place that I seem to visit relatively regularly... Heatherbrae's Pies, which located at the Exeter truck-stop in between Sydney and Canberra. I drive quite a bit between the two cities, and so if I'm here in the daytime, I will stop here instead of the MacDonalds. But more often than not, I'm in the middle of the night... and so, this pie shop is closed.
Now, what did attract me to this initially (apart from not being MacDonalds) was the claim that it was awarded the title BEST pies in the ACT region for some years. Well, ACT region is sort of pushing it a bit... but seeing as I had lived in a country where pies weren't a thing for such a long time... I had a hankering to start stuffing myself with them again!
The Space
When you first enter... well, you can't help but to notice the unusual décor! An old fashioned delivery truck... I wonder if they have really been making pies that long?
There are quite generous outdoor seating areas that are under cover... but during the hot Australian days... well, these get pretty uncomfortable! You are better off sitting in the airconditioned inside areas or in the open air tables. I had forgotten how harsh the Australian daytime sun could be!
The Menu
Pies pies pies... both gourmet and regular. With lots of options for takeaways, eating in, or frozen ones for later!
... and if you take a look at the proper menus that follow... you have a complete range from the traditional favourites through to some pretty odd gourmet ones! I'm more generally a traditional sort of guy though...
The Food
... and by traditional, it will be pretty much always pepper steak ones! I really had missed these in the Netherlands!
Now, for the claim that they are the best in the ACT region... well, they are pretty good... but I'm not quite sure that I would make such a bold claim! I will have to taste test more in the region before I would back that comment!
... but the coffee... not so good...
The Experience
During the lunch times, this place is seriously packed! Lots of motorway traffic dropping in... there will be large lines, but they are generally sorted pretty quickly... and most people are pretty friendly and patient! The ones that aren't are probably Sydney people.. or Canberran public servants!

Nice place and food. That's cool; pie is still called traditional in your country, @bengy.
Traditional food is much more impressive and has memorable value, but I agree with you that it doesn't always taste as good as the food that was made in our childhood.
Everyone will definitely come back to taste traditional food if it has a taste that is almost the same as the taste memories from someone's past.
Ha ha.. You claim that some of them are unfriendly and impatient. There is a similarity in my country: our people are very, very friendly, but the ones who are impatient are mostly government employees, who should be people who are used to serving the public.
Haha... pies are pretty stock standard fare in Australia! Nothing fancy... but sometimes, you can really fill them with really nice stuff which makes for a really big change! At home, we make larger pies with chicken and leek filling... or with leftover stews.
The menu is also available in my country... it's just that because in Indonesia the majority of people always consume rice, so this menu is just a stopover in the stomach @bengy 🤣🤣🤣
Haha... a stomach stopover!
