From Pont d'en Gil to Ciutadella: Cliffs, the Blue Sea, and the Freedom to Walk Alone

For my latest post on Hive, I went on a really interesting hike to a place called Pont d'en Gil. The trip involved taking a bus there and then walking down, passing by different coves like Cala en Brut, Cala en Blanes, and the Sa Farola trail.
All of this is located in the Ciutadella area. I used to think that Ciutadella was just the urban and historic part of the city—which is actually beautiful, and I’ll share something about it with you at some point—but it turns out that all these incredible coves are also part of the municipality.

De Pont d'en Gil a Ciutadella: acantilados, mar azul y la libertad de caminar sola

Para mi último post en Hive, me fui a hacer una caminata sumamente interesante a un lugar que se llama Pont d'en Gil. La travesía consistió en llegar hasta ahí en colectivo para, posteriormente, ir bajando a pie pasando por distintas calas como Cala en Brut, Cala en Blanes y el camino de Sa Farola.

Todo esto se encuentra en la zona de Ciutadella. Yo pensaba que Ciutadella era solamente la parte de la ciudad urbana y antigua —que de hecho es preciosa y en algún momento les voy a compartir algo sobre ella—, pero resulta que todas estas calas increíbles también forman parte del municipio.

The Journey to Pont d'en Gil and the Beauty of Cala en Brut

It was extremely hot because I took a bus that left at 1:00 p.m. It took me two and a half hours to reach this part of the island where I am now, since Menorca has rather poor public transportation connections. However, since I had the day off, I was willing to make the trip.

I arrived at Pont d’en Gil, one of Menorca’s most notable and iconic landmarks, where you can see a natural bridge formed by the erosive forces of nature. Many people pass underneath it by boat or even by swimming, since the sea is quite calm. In my case, I didn’t go in the water because I was alone and wasn’t quite ready to leave my things behind, jump in, and climb back out without supervision, but I really enjoyed walking around the whole area.

Hacía muchísimo calor porque tomé un colectivo que salía a la 1:00 de la tarde. Demoré dos horas y media en llegar hasta este punto de la isla desde donde me encuentro, ya que Menorca está bastante mal conectada por transporte público. Sin embargo, como tenía el día libre, estaba dispuesta a hacerlo.

Llegué a Pont d'en Gil, uno de los puntos más destacados e icónicos de Menorca, donde se aprecia un puente natural creado por la propia erosión de la naturaleza. Mucha gente pasa por debajo navegando en embarcaciones o incluso nadando, ya que el mar es bastante calmo. En mi caso no me metí al agua porque iba sola y no estaba tan preparada para dejar mis cosas, saltar y volver a subir sin supervisión, pero disfruté muchísimo caminando por toda la zona.

From there, I started heading down and passed through Cala en Brut, which I thought was beautiful. I think it’s my favorite spot on the island, at least in terms of scenery. It has tons of man-made levels and platforms that look incredible, with stairs leading down to the water and spots where you can jump in. The water is completely crystal-clear—a true beauty.

Then I passed by Cala en Blanes, which, although it looked pretty, was way too crowded and very small, so I couldn’t even enjoy it visually.

Desde ahí empecé a bajar y pasé por Cala en Brut, que me pareció preciosa. Creo que es el lugar que más me gusta de la isla, al menos paisajísticamente. Tiene muchísimos niveles y plataformas hechas por el ser humano que se ven increíbles, con escaleras para bajar al agua y sectores desde donde se puede saltar. El agua es completamente cristalina, una verdadera belleza.
Luego pasé por Cala en Blanes, que aunque se veía bonita, estaba demasiado llena de gente y es muy pequeña, así que no pude ni disfrutarla visualmente.

Surprises along the coast and the Menorcan heat

From there, I had to head down specifically toward the city of Ciutadella, and I came across a beautiful path: the Camí de Sa Farola, which runs along the entire coastline. I wasn’t expecting that, just as I wasn’t expecting to see San Nicolás Castle—which is divine—from the shore, or the Sa Farola area, which turned out to be gorgeous. It was an unexpected surprise that brightened up my trip. I finally arrived in Ciutadella, took the bus back to Mahón, and from there returned to where I’m staying.

Sorpresas en la costa y el calor menorquín

Desde allí ya me tocaba bajar concretamente hacia la ciudad de Ciutadella y me encontré con un camino hermoso: el Camí de Sa Farola, que va bordeando toda la costa. Eso no me lo esperaba, como tampoco esperaba ver desde la orilla el Castillo de San Nicolás —que es divino— ni la zona de Sa Farola, que resultó ser preciosa. Fue una sorpresa inesperada que me alegró el recorrido. Finalmente llegué a Ciutadella, tomé el bus de vuelta hacia Mahón y desde allí regresé a donde estoy viviendo.

The walk back took about two hours, and the hardest part was the heat. It’s incredibly hot in Menorca, and the humidity is extreme—much more so than in Ibiza. I was drinking water the whole time—I must have drunk over two liters during the hike—and even so, I felt dehydrated. Still, it was totally worth it. It’s a hike best done in the morning or at sunset, but because of the bus schedule, I ended up doing it right in the middle of siesta time. I don’t regret it at all, though I will say this: if anyone decides to do it, you have to be very prepared—wear a hat and bring plenty of water.

La caminata de vuelta duró alrededor de dos horas y lo más difícil fue la temperatura. Hace muchísimo calor en Menorca y la humedad es extrema, mucho más que en Ibiza. Estuve tomando agua todo el tiempo —debo haber superado los dos litros en la travesía— y aun así me sentía deshidratada. Sin embargo, valió totalmente la pena. Era un recorrido para hacer por la mañana o al atardecer, pero por una cuestión de horarios de los colectivos terminé agarrando de lleno las horas de la siesta. No me arrepiento para nada, aunque eso sí: si alguien se anima a hacerlo, hay que ir con mucha conciencia, gorra y abundante agua.

The essence of the island and the magic of spontaneity

The landscapes in this part of the island are characterized by low cliffs, coastal plains, and a sea that ranges from crystal-clear to deep blue. There isn’t much elevation or hills. Overall, what strikes me most about Menorca is that there are residential developments populated mainly by tourists, but outside those areas, there’s absolutely nothing. While in areas like Cala en Brut there are narrow streets with a few restaurants or small cafés, this type of hike lets you see the island’s true character in its purest and most natural state. It doesn’t feel as heavily influenced by human activity or the real estate market as it does, for example, in Ibiza.

La esencia de la isla y la magia de lo espontáneo

Los paisajes de esta zona de la isla se caracterizan por acantilados bajos, llanuras sobre la costa y un mar que pasa de cristalino a un azul profundo. No hay demasiado relieve ni colinas. En general, lo que más me llama la atención de Menorca es que hay urbanizaciones ocupadas principalmente por el turismo, pero fuera de esos núcleos no hay nada de nada. Si bien en zonas como Cala en Brut hay callecitas con algunos locales de comida o cafecitos, este tipo de rutas te permite ver la fisonomía de la isla en su estado más puro y natural. No se siente tan intervenida por el ser humano ni por el mercado inmobiliario como pasa, por ejemplo, en Ibiza.

I loved taking this hike. It had been a long time since I’d gone out alone on such a long hike through a completely unfamiliar place—maybe three or four months, during which I’d only walked near where I live or taken short hikes with others. This wasn’t something I planned meticulously, but rather a very spontaneous hike that I enjoyed from start to finish.

Me encantó hacer esta caminata. Hacía mucho tiempo que no salía sola a hacer un trayecto tan largo por un lugar completamente desconocido —quizás unos tres o cuatro meses en los que solo caminaba cerca de donde vivo o tramos cortos acompañada—. Esto no fue algo planeado minuciosamente, sino una ruta muy espontánea que disfruté de principio a fin.
