Katy Perry had released a Christian album under her name Katy Hudson, and was followed by extended play (EP) years after. Finally, she released the album which made her popular with "One of the Boys".

Perry has generated controversy on the album's lead single "I Kissed a Girl", but it became very successful commercially. The pop rock track reached number 1 in Billboard Hot 100, while number 2 in US Mainstream chart (6x platinum). It also became her first UK number 1 (2x platinum) hit as well as on Eurochart Hot 100.

Katy Perry broke the one-hit wonder status when her second single "Hot n Cold" became a global hit again, even reaching number 1 in certain territories. In Billboard Hot 100, it reached number 3, however, it became a number 1 hit on US Mainstream chart, and was 8x platinum in the country. It peaked at number 4 in the UK, as it had gone double platinum there, but a bigger hit on European Hot 100 Singles, scoring her second number 1 .

The soft rock ballad "Thinking of You" was released as the third single, and it became a hit in Asia. In major countries, it was a moderate hit. It charted at number 29 in Billboard Hot 100, though a number 17 hit in US Mainstream chart. The single was platinum in America. It became a Silver Record in UK, where it peaked at number 27, while higher in Europe at 20.

The final single was "Waking Up in Vegas", which has a pop rock sound. The song became Katy's third top 10 (number 9) hit in Billboard Hot 100, though it reached the top spot of US Mainstream chart. It only peaked at number 19 in UK Singles Chart, though it's higher than its predecessor.

"One of the Boys" has established Katy Perry in the music industry though at that time, she wasn't still considered to be as one of the superstars then considering her album only peaking at number 9 in the US, and 11 in UK. Still, it was 3x and 2x platinum respectively.
