June 6 2023 - The big talk requires prep

avatar

I had to make a big presentation today. One that I have been preparing for, for at least 1 month.

I have slowly been refining the content, the message and the way I was going to present. I did a few practice runs of the content. I wanted to refrain from looking at notes when I presented so that it felt more natural so I memorised most .

Even on the tube on the way to work, I went over my notes again.

I wasn't nervous, I am quite used to speaking publicly I just wanted perfection in the way the message came across as it was an important message to communicate.

It was over in a flash. After all that prep.

I think it went well but I will find out in a few days when I see the feedback.

I had to complete a presentation course once as part of my training in a past role at BT. I hated it! I'm not cut out for that sort of thing. Luckily I didn't ever have to a presentation after that. 😥

I admire it when people can speak freely like you!
It's not something I've ever really done, but as you know do I play guitar and sing, we're playing this afternoon actually.
I'm sure speaking is just practice as well, a bit of theatre. My Mum asked me if I'd speak at her funeral, but I'm not sure if I could do that with or without practice though.. 😄
Hope the outcome of your speech will (or is?) good.. 👍

It's exactly that. I used to be such a shy and nervous kid but its just practice. I do bring a bit of drama into it. One of the key things is being comfortable with quiet too. Too many people speak quickly because they feel they need to say something but actually pausing is fine and will appear quite natural.

I am sure it is like playing music - something I wish I could do but something I never learnt. it must be great playing the guitar!

a shy and nervous kid
That always amazes me, that often shy people make the best performers!
Many people on stage are shy in nature, often not even funny when not on stage..

And I like the "pausing" bit.. You say it best when you saying nothing at all..
Gives the listener room to digest the info.

Thank you! Some good advise even for playing guitar!
