Hive Open Mic #110 - Superstar (The Carpenters)
Hello Hivers, Swing Time again! My musical hug comes from the radio as in the song "Superstar" by the Carpenters.
The Radio
In days of the radio a musical hug by your favourite song and artist was sought after when you sometimes had to wait for ages before it would be played again.
Nowadays it isn't something that people can comprehend when your favourite tune is instantly available. In the time of the radio records and a record player weren't something that everybody could afford, so waiting for that one special moment was all they could do.
Were you lucky enough to own a record, you treasured it and listened to it over and over until it got that crackly quality that makes it vintage today..
The Song
It's another older one and again slightly on the melancholy side.
My friend Steve O (not actively on Hive) used to play this for me, but I thought I should try more picking myself, seeing so many talented people on here, doing just that...
The Carpenter's version of this song is from 1971 and has been noted as the most popular, with Karen giving it her classic warm and emotional touch. I tried to add a bit of that Carpenters flair by layering my voice. This is also still a learning curve, but great fun to explore.
The Recording
An eye opener!
The first one I did a few days ago was ready to go, or so I thought... But then I listened to the original... Oh, man! I was way too fast! My nerves with those picky bits must have gotten the better of me! I love the Carpenters, and had thought I knew the song so well!
This reminded me of this post https://peakd.com/hive-105786/@mipiano/mztdlabg by @mipiano, in which she wrote about losing your nerve as soon as you turn on the camera even when there's nobody in the room, quite funny really! Big Brother is always watching and even if it's only in your mind.. haha
Anyway I had to go back to the drawing board, and started over, and I'm happy (for) now...
