Garden Journal, End Of May Garden and Greenhouse

avatar

Hello, hivers! Welcome to da garden, eh!

We're only a few days away from the end of May now, so I thought it would be a good time to take a look at what's happening in the garden and the greenhouse for my end of the month garden journal report.

I might as well start with the typical sight of a garden in Michigan's Upper Peninsula when the gardener (me) has been a bit optimistic about the weather this time of year and planted tomato plants in the garden before Memorial day weekend. This is the second night of 4 nights of possible frost conditions at night...it didn't even get to 50F today...

The carrots don't care about a bit of frost, they're fine.
Nothing like a picture to show you the weeds you need to pick, and the spots where the carrots are too thick and need to be thinned out...

My strawberry plants are blooming now, I hope the cold nights won't affect them too much.

I'm hoping that my new grape fine will be ok. It's pretty hard to cover it.

I know that the wild grape vine will be ok, those things are pretty tough.

I have lots of marigolds from the seeds of last year's plants. I've been digging them up and transplanting them where I want them, but there's a lot of plants in the bed, and more keep coming up.

Now for the greenhouse. All but 4 of my tomato plants are still in the greenhouse right now. 10 of the plants are going to stay in the greenhouse in the big pots, the rest will be planted in the garden, with a few given to my daughter for her garden. Some of the plants are in the smaller pots, waiting for their new home.

The 5 plants in the faded red pots are my Amana Orange tomato plants.

This is all the smaller tomato plants that I have. I was going to transplant them into bigger pots, but I might end up just putting them right into the garden. I think some of the later ones may still be too small for that right now. The double plant in the styrofoam cup is a cherry tomato plant that was given to me a few days ago. I didn't already have enough tomato plants, you know. 😀

I don't have anything new to show you from the community garden, it will probably be at least a week before I start seeing the potato plants starting to come up, it takes them a while to get going.

Well, that's all I have to show you for this post. Thanks for stopping by to take a look!

We're to be in the 40's at night this weekend. I'd hoped to get plants outside on Friday, but nope, too cold. Maybe next week...Hope to plant next week...

Your garden looks like it's ready for some nice sunny days.
It's funny that you mention too many tomatoes. We planted 24 tomato plants, several different kinds. Then three days ago, @farm-mom's cousin stops by and drops off another dozen, saying she has too many. What's a guy supposed to do, turn down free tomato plants.
Making tomato sauce will definitely be on the agenda when they all start coming in.

I'm guessing that you'll have enough tomatoes to make some big batches of tomato sauce once all the tomatoes start getting ripe.
