Travel Itinerary: Caracas - Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Me with my camba hat [ENG | ESP]

When I told my family and friends that I had to travel to Bolivia for work reasons, everyone alluded to the magnitude of the altitude to which I had to get used and the cold that is associated with being close to 4000 meters above sea level.

My dad recommended I accept the coca leaves that they were going to give me, I do not remember if before landing or when descending from where the airport is at 4000 meters to a little lower where La Paz is located. This would help me to acclimatize and not go through what in Venezuela we call a páramo sickness at Pico el Águila in the state of Mérida.

In addition to my curiosity to be close to a culture that I appreciate so much and arouses so much interest in me and all that I consider that I have to learn from it, my excitement could not fit in my chest to go to meet with some of my best friends who have been living in La Paz for some years. And the preparations for the reunion began.

All this was a matter of fewer than 5 days, until the moment the formal invitation arrived in my hands. Place of the event: Santa Cruz de la Sierra. I google and I realize that the city is 400 meters above sea level and has a very cool climate quite similar to Caracas for these times when winter is about to end in the south and La Paz it is at a distance of a plane ride of an hour. It was getting difficult to see my friends, then my boss explains to me that Santa Cruz is an Amazonian city that is usually much warmer and humid. I'm still excited about my trip, it's Bolivia! and when they tell me Amazonas, many sensitivities are activated that move me.

My incessant interest, curiosity, and restlessness are activated and I understand that I am going to the largest city in Bolivia, with the highest economic growth and large international investments, in addition to the promise of the great hospitality of the locals, a promise that was fulfilled.

I received my flight itinerary and even though it was not a direct flight I did not find it so uncomfortable; Caracas - Panama - Santa Cruz de la Sierra and the same way back. The stopover in Panama for 7 hours did not discourage me at all, I would do a lot in that airport, even without money, not even for the internet, much less for shopping.

I arrived in Santa Cruz at 9 pm and after a very cordial reception at immigration and customs the first thing I did was to buy a line for the phone with an offer of $ 10 for 4 days of unlimited internet, we started very well.

The person who waited for me at the airport to transfer me to the hotel explained to me the organization of the city: rings of vehicular circulation that go around from the center where the 24 de Septiembre square starting in ring 1 to ring 7 or 8 I do not remember exactly the number of the last ring, but the important thing is that you know my impression that Santa Cruz is a very large city in territorial extension, totally flat and the most inhabited of Bolivia.

On the way from the airport to the hotel I remembered a lot about Maracaibo, the city where I was born, I remembered it in its best times to see the great commercial movement of this city, the great marketing of agricultural and industrial machinery, and for the flat and extensive. This was my impression of the first face that the city gave me.

They explained to me that the Novotel, the hotel where the event would be held, was located in the 4th ring of the city, a very nice area of business complexes, large buildings, and places for exhibitions, and that's where they took us that night.

I was only in the city for 2 full days, completing 4 days with the day of travel there and the day of return. The agenda of the event kept us very busy, most of the activities took place at the Novotel but fortunately in the evening of the first day we were taken to the Universidad Autónoma Gabriel René Moreno, a very important, large, and very old university to share a lecture with the students.

This day gave us a lot, and here I must say that in Santa Cruz commercial life is open until 11 at night, which says a lot about a city. I was shown at least 4 shopping malls of very large dimensions, for those who know Venezuela my reference in size is the Sambil of Margarita or the Oronokia of Puerto Ordaz, something very big.

I was very tempted to make a dive into some of these malls but common sense told me that mall is mall anywhere in the world and due to the short time available, at about 10 pm I preferred to take a walk through the Plaza 24 de Septiembre and I do not regret it, because it was very busy, with lots of life and beautiful scenes.

In one of the corners of the Plaza is located the Sense Hotel, a hotel with all the amenities where you can stay for one night for only $ 45, in Caracas you would pay more than $ 80 for a hotel like this, with a breakfast buffet included.

I took advantage of the scenes around the square to take some pictures of the Cathedral and the Government Palace of the city.

The agenda for the second day of the event seemed to end at noon, but the international guests were surprised with an invitation to a very exclusive area called Urubó, which is reached by crossing the Piraí River. For the inhabitants of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, crossing the river is something else, on that side, it is another city. Indeed, I was able to see the number of private condominiums, villas, and modern buildings and the potential growth of this area in which there is a great deal of national and multinational investment.

The purpose of this invitation was to take us to lunch at the Restaurant "Casa del Camba" of typical food of this area of Bolivia, where its Amazon jungle geography is accentuated and we realize the biodiversity of the country with its landscapes, its diverse culture.

Since we saw that the restaurant bears the name Camba, there I asked about its meaning and they explained to me that the word camba in Bolivia is used since time immemorial to define the indigenous population of the Kandire originating in the tropical zone in the east of the country. Today the word camba refers to the people of eastern Bolivia.

Here we were treated to dances, songs, poetry, and fabulous hats for each of the guests, I did not take mine off for 2 days.

The food: was delicious, the weather was nice and cool, the hospitality was felt, and the company was of the highest level for networking and learning.

Of all the food, a beer and a dulce de leche like this from the south of America but eaten with cheese were the ones that took my picture. But I must mention that here they eat grilled meat very similar to the Argentines and Uruguayans and also something I had never seen before, rice with cheese that looks like a puree of so much melted cheese that my mouth is watering.

We were served a tasting of various dishes with stews and side dishes but the one that stole everyone's attention, they even got up to get more, was a fabulous roast suckling pig.

After this pleasant sharing, we had time to make some essential purchases such as coca tea and stevia from this area.
There is a lot of regionalist feeling and autonomy in this region, which unfortunately falls into much rivalry with the population of the Andean region to the west, this gives me much regret, because in the street I got to hear very unfortunate expressions, however not so among the Bolivians who attended the event trying to explain very elegantly this situation, I only mention it by way of cultural enrichment and I am oblivious to this internal conflict.

It turns out that according to what I was told, the settlement of Bolivia, (obviously after its ancestral native peoples), came from two directions, from the west the Andean cities of La Paz and Cochabamba were populated and from the east, mainly coming from Paraguay, the city of Santa Cruz and its surroundings were populated, I am referring to the colonization of the Spaniards who came to this area that was once the Alto Peru as I often read that our Liberator in Common Simon Bolivar called it and that today is that beautiful independent country thanks to Antonio Jose de Sucre who proposed that it be named Bolivia.

I returned to Caracas with my royal hat, I was happy with cruceños airs, scale in Panama with my hat, arrive in Maiquetia with my hat, and enter the house with my hat camba.

I am ready for my next adventure. I hope the next one in Bolivia will be in La Paz so I can enjoy the altiplano and experience the great ecological and cultural diversity of this wonderful country.

Cuando les conté a mis familiares y amigos que debía viajar a Bolivia por motivos de trabajo, todos me hacían alusión a la magnitud de la altura a la que debía acostumbrarme y al frío que se asocia a estar cerca de los 4000 mts. de altitud.

Mi papá me recomendaba aceptar las hojitas de coca que me iban a dar, no recuerdo si antes de aterrizar o al descender de dónde está el aeropuerto a 4000 mts. hasta un poco más abajo donde está ubicada La Paz. Esto ayudaría a aclimatarme y no pasar por lo que sería lo que en Venezuela llamamos un mal de páramo en el Pico el Águila en el estado Mérida.

Además de mi curiosidad por estar cerca de una cultura que tanto aprecio y tanto interés me despierta y todo lo que considero que tengo que aprender de ésta, mi emoción no cabía en mi pecho por ir a encontrarme con unos de mis mejores amigos que desde hace algunos años viven en La Paz, y así comenzaron los preparativos del reencuentro.

Todo ésto fue cuestión de menos de 5 días, hasta el momento en que la invitación formal llegó a mis manos. Lugar de realización del evento: Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Googleo y me doy cuenta que la ciudad está a 400 mts s.n.m. y tiene un clima muy fresco bastante parecido a Caracas para estos tiempos en que está por terminar en invierno en el sur y en relación a La Paz se encuentra a la distancia de un viaje en avión de una hora. Se ponía difícil ver a mis amigos, luego me explica mi jefe que Santa Cruz es una ciudad amazónica, que por lo general es mucho más cálida y húmeda. Sigo animada con mi viaje, es Bolivia! y cuando me dicen Amazonas se me activan muchas sensibilidades que me mueven.

Se sigue activando mi incesante interés, curiosidad e inquietud y ya voy entendiendo que voy a la ciudad más grande de Bolivia, de mayor crecimiento económico y grandes inversiones internacionales, además de la promesa de una gran hospitalidad de sus lugareños, promesa que fue cumplida.

Recibí mi itinerario de vuelo y a pesar de que no se trataba de un vuelo directo no me pareció tan incómodo; Caracas - Panamá - Santa Cruz de la Sierra y así mismo de regreso. La escala en Panamá por 7 horas para nada me amilanó, mucho haría en ese aeropuerto, hasta sin dinero, ni para internet, mucho menos para compras.

Arribé a Santa Cruz a las 9 de la noche y tras un recibimiento muy cordial en migración y aduana lo primero que hice fue comprar una linea para el teléfono con una oferta de 10$ por 4 días de internet ilimitado, comenzamos muy bien.

La persona que me esperó en el aeropuerto para trasladarme al hotel me explicó la organización de la ciudad: anillos de circulación vehicular que van rodeando desde el centro donde está la plaza 24 de septiembre iniciando en el anillo 1 hasta el anillo 7 u 8 no recuerdo exactamente el número del último anillo, pero lo importante es que sepan mi impresión de que Santa Cruz es una ciudad muy grande en extensión territorial, totalmente plana y la más habitada de Bolivia.

En el recorrido del aeropuerto al hotel recordé muchísimo a Maracaibo, la ciudad donde nací, la recordé en sus mejores tiempos al ver el gran movimiento comercial de esta ciudad, una gran comercialización de maquinaria agricola e industrial y por lo plano y extenso. Está fue mi impresión a la primera cara que la ciudad me dió.

Me explicaron que el Novotel, hotel donde sería el evento quedaba en el 4to anillo de la ciudad, una zona muy bonita de complejos empresariales, grandes edificios y lugares para exposiciones, y hasta allí nos llevaron esa noche.

Solo estuve 2 días completos en la ciudad, completando 4 días con el día de viaje de ida y el día de regreso. La agenda del evento nos tuvo full ocupados, la mayoría de las actividades se desarrollaron en el Novotel pero por fortuna en la noche del primer día nos llevaron a la Universidad Autónoma Gabriel René Moreno, una universidad muy importante, grande y de mucha antigüedad a compartir una ponencia con los estudiantes.

Este día nos rindió muchísimo, y aquí debo decir que en Santa Cruz la vida comercial está abierta hasta las 11 de la noche, eso dice mucho de una ciudad. Me mostraron al pasar al menos 4 shoping mall de muy grandes dimensiones, para quienes conocen Venezuela mi referencia en tamaño es el Sambil de Margarita o el Oronokia de Puerto Ordaz, algo muy grande.

Me tenté muchísimo de hacer una inmersión en algunos de estos mall pero el sentido común me dijo que mall es mall en cualquier parte del mundo y debido al poco tiempo disponible, a eso de las 10 de la noche preferí dar un paseo por la Plaza 24 de septiembre y no me arrepiento, porque estaba muy concurrida, con mucha vida y escenas hermosas.

En una de las esquinas de la Plaza se ubica el Sense Hotel, un hotel con todas las comodidades dónde puedes alojarte por una noche por solo 45$ , en Caracas pagarías más de 80 $ por un hotel así, con desayuno tipo buffet incluído.

Aproveche las escenas aledañas a la plaza para tomar algunas fotos de la Catedral y el Palacio de Gobierno de la ciudad.

La agenda del segundo día del evento parecía terminar al medio día, pero nos sorprendieron a los invitados internacionales con una invitación a una zona muy exclusiva llamada Urubó a la que se llega atravesando el río Piraí. Para los habitantes de Santa Cruz de la Sierra pasar el río es otra cosa, de aquel lado es otra ciudad. Pues efectivamente pude comprobar la cantidad de condominios privados, villas, edificios modernos y el crecimiento en potencia de esta zona en la que se nota gran inversión nacional y multinacional.

El objeto de esta invitación era llevarnos a un almuerzo al Restaurant "Casa del Camba" de comida típica de esta zona de Bolivia, dónde se acentúa su geografía selvática amazónica y nos damos cuenta de la biodiversidad del país con sus paisajes, su cultura tan diversa.

Ya que vimos que el restaurante lleva el nombre Camba, allí pregunté su significado y me explicaron que la palabra camba es en Bolivia se usa desde todos los tiempos para definir, a la población indígena de los Kandire originaria de la zona tropical al oriente del país. Hoy en día con la palabra camba se refieren a las personas del oriente de Bolivia.

Aquí nos regalaron bailes, canciones, poesía y unos sombreros fabulosos a cada uno de los invitados, el mío no me lo quité por 2 días.

La comida: riquísima, el clima agradable y fresco, la hospitalidad se sintió, la compañía del más alto nivel para hacer networking y aprender.

De toda la comida, una cerveza y un dulce de leche así tipo del sur de América pero que se come con queso fueron los que me sacaron una foto. Pero debo mencionar que aquí se come la carne asada muy parecida a los argentinos y uruguayos además algo que jamás había visto, el arroz con queso que llega a parecer un puré de tanto queso derretido que ya que lo cuento se me hace agua la boca. Nos sirvieron una degustación de varios platos con guisos y guarniciones pero el que se robó la atención de todos, incluso se levantaban a buscar más, fue un lechón asado fabuloso.

Luego de este compartir tan agradable tuvimos momento de hacer unas compras infaltables cómo el te de coca y la estevia originaria de esta zona.

Hay mucho sentimiento regionalista y de autonomía en esta región, que lamentablemente cae en mucha rivalidad con la población de la región andina al occidente, esto me da mucho pesar, porque en la calle llegué a escuchar expresiones muy lamentables, sin embargo no así entre los bolivianos que asistieron al evento que tratan de explicar con mucha elegancia está situación, sin embargo solo lo menciono a modo de enriquecimiento cultural y soy totalmente ajena a ese conflicto interno.

Resulta que según me contaron el poblamiento de Bolivia, (obviamente posterior a sus pueblos originarios ancestrales), se dió desde dos direcciones, por el occidente se poblaron las ciudades andinas cómo La Paz y Cochabamba y desde el oriente provenientes principalmente de Paraguay se pobló la ciudad de Santa Cruz y sus alrededores, me refiero a la colonización de los españoles que llegaron a esta zona que alguna vez fue el Alto Perú como muchas veces leí que le llamaba nuestro Libertador en Común Simón Bolivar y que hoy es ese hermoso país independiente gracias a Antonio José de Sucre quien propuso que recibiera por nombre Bolivia.

Regresé a Caracas con mi sombrero regio, yo feliz con aires cruceños, escala en Panamá con mi sombrero, llegar a Maiquetía con mi sombrero, entrar a la casa con mi sombrero camba.

Ya estoy lista para mi próxima Aventura. Espero que la próxima en Bolivia sea en La Paz y así yo podré disfrutar del altiplano y así haber vivido la gran diversidad ecológica y cultural de este país maravilloso.
