FROM HELP TO HARM. (BETRAYAL OF BROTHERHOOD)
This is a true life, yet unbelievable story of someone who in ways unimaginable, returned harm for the help rendered to him by his blood brother.
Many in our world are really unthankful and ungrateful.They make it hard for people to do good to others because they return bad for the good done to them.
Granted, we do not do good because we want people to reward us but even if they are not going to reward or appreciate, they shouldn't treat the giver badly at any point in time.
Wunmi, is a man I know whom his family called into a meeting with his younger brother. His family told him that they want to send his kid brother abroad. That was his opportunity as a graduate to go look for greener pastures abroad, but he stepped down for his brother that was still in School.
Years past, no one heard from the younger brother Tolu. The parents became worried and found through relatives abroad that their Son was doing well, but just greedy and wasteful, not allowing anyone to come between him and the extravagant life he was leading.
Seven years after he left the country, he involved himself in what earned him a deportation. He lost everything and came back empty-handed.
Meanwhile, for the Seven years, his elder Brother in Nigeria had become a banker and doing well.
When he was deported, he came back to the family house like a prodigal son, but his parents drove him out. He came back with nothing .
His Brother, Wunmi heard he was back and called him to move over to his house. The parents warned Wunmi to desist from associating with him, but Wunmi paid deaf ears. Tolu began to live with Wunmi and his new wife.
In order not to stay alone when Wunmi and his wife goes to work, he decided to follow Wunmi to work everyday, even if it is to sit in his office. There, he met the love of his life, Ronke. They fell in love.
A few months later, he told his brother Wunmi that he would have loved to get married to Ronke but he has no money. Wunmi paid all the Bridal requirements and married his wife for him. As if that's not enough, Wunmi got him an apartment, furnished it and bought him a car.
Wunmi's wife encouraged him to set up a business for him as well. That, he did but it was supposed to be a joint business.
Wunmi entered into a business with Tolu. Wunmi funded it, but Tolu would be the one in charge of buying the products for sale. It was clothe business. Tolu goes to buy the wares such as jeans, T-shirts, shoes, belts and other items related to these. He stays in the shop to sell and runs the business , but all the money for the business belonged to Wunmi.
They opened a joint account and made it in a way that any can sign. That way, if Tolu goes to buy more wares, he can withdraw money without being stranded as regards the other signatory. They have a sharing formulae they use to share proceeds from the business.
Somewhere along the line, there was mass retrenchment of bankers in 2010. Sadly, that affected Wunmi. He lost his job. For no reason, he came to work and found that he couldn't log in. Many others have been retrenched too. Wunmi was disheveled. He has risen to the top, he never thought he could be thrown away like a piece of rag.
If Wunmi had known to go to the shop immediately. He spend days brooding over the loss of the job. He refused to be comforted by his wife. Tolu and his wife too came to comfort him, but Wunmi never knew their plan.
By the time Wunmi was strong enough to face his problem, he decided to go to the shop, probably to join in the sales before he would get another job. To his surprise, Tolu has made away with the whole goods in the shop. The shop was empty. Wunmi was mouth-agaped.
So far he had invested N11million into the business, he hasnt taken a dime out of it. You know what N11million meant as at 2010? As he ran to the Bank to block the account, his account office told him he has been trying to call him for weeks but his phone has been switched off. The account officer told him that his Brother has withdrawn all the money in that account and showed him the bank statement. His frustration grew.
The funny thing is that Tolu wasn't even on the run, rather he even sent threat messages to his Brother that he will deal with him If he thinks of taking any legal action. He claimed that he alone suffered for the business, besides that his elder Brother was greedy not to have opened the business for him alone.
Wunmi never got back another job for four years, yet Tolu never cared to ask how Wunmi and his wife are coping.
Wunmi decided to send his own car to the mechanic for proper maintenance, who knows if he wanted to use it for Taxi. You will not believe that by the time Wunmi went back to claim his car back, He learnt that Tolu had sold the car.
During the period he came to comfort his brother for the loss of his job, he had stolen the car document. He too drives the car, so getting the document wasn't hard for him. I guess he had arranged with the mechanic on how to make sale of the car any time his brother brings it for repair.
This story may look too ugly to be true, but it is a true life story. This happened some thirteen years ago, uptil now, Tolu has never returned the money for Wunmi, neither has he come to apologize and make amends.
What wrong has Wunmi done, taking him in when family members abandoned him?
HOW THE EXPERIENCE CHANGED ME
I learnt never to take people for face value.
I learnt to look before allowing anyone into my life
I learnt that everything in the World is vanity, you can lose all you have in one day
I learnt to always listen when parents advise
I also learnt resilience and personal growth. Wunmi left matters in God's hands, he was advised not to go legal with his own blood but trust that God will fight his battle. He continued to struggle and develop himself and now, he is managing life with his family.
STILL IN CONTACT TILL NOW?
NO. We should not harbour resentment but if you ask me, if Tolu is given a chance to be with Wunmi again, he would poison him. He has done enough harm to him and his family for years without remorse.
Uptil now, Wunmi's life hasnt come half way as it was thirteen years ago. He is still struggling and managing life with his wife.
The relationship has been destroyed. Although he has left matters in the hands of God, to Wunmi, he has no brother. He has instructed his wife that the day he comes from anywhere and finds that guy in his house, that would be the end of their marriage.
It beats my imagination how people can be so ungrateful. The parents could not help because they have warned him. But the disappointment their Mother felt in Tolu on how he treated his Brother gave her heart attack, before long, she came down with stroke. I feel so concerned and unhappy when I see the couple struggling or even trekking when I know whom the man was years ago, up to the extent of buying a car for his brother. Well, may God help us not to do good for an ungrateful element 😅

I have my own experience of how people have treated me with ingratitude but this story about my friend's family breaks my heart more. Hence I chose to write it.

Well, I have a thing against doing business with family. Truth be told, hardly can you find any sincere person these days. I pray Wunmi gets his life back soon

That's such a cruel act. How can Tolu do such a thing to his own blood brother who cared so much for him and gave up a golden opportunity he had, just because of him???

What kind of brother is that? What he did to wunmi is not different from killing him. Some people are just too mean. No wonder many don't want to extend helping hands to others anymore because they fear betrayal. It is well.
