First @yourtop3 Topic of the Year: My Favo(u)rite Authors! πŸ˜‰πŸ“šπŸ–ŠπŸ“

Happy first weekend of the year friends! I am sure 2020 is going to fly by just as quickly as last year, so might as well make it a good one. My pals @nickhavey, @cheese4ead, @foxyspirit and I have another super fun topic for this month's @yourtop3 contest--your top picks for awesome authors!

As a book lover myself, this topic particularlly excites me. I love having some good recommendations to start out the year, and the entries are already coming in with some new ideas for me to stick my nose into. I have a tendency when I find a good book to dive right in and not come up for air until I'm finished. Admittedly, sometimes I read stories so quickly that I have to go back and re-read them later on because I often forget the details because I'm so excited to find out what happens next in the plot! I know some people will never read the same book twice because there are just so many out there to explore, but I have beloved characters I have no qualms about revisiting on occasion in between new adventures to explore.

Of course as a fitness and nutrition coach I read lots of health-related material, as well, but for this post I'm focusing on what I like to read for non-work-related literary fun. As a few of our dear Top 3 family have lamented, it is a challenge to narrow down to just three choices, but I think I've got my current list sorted pretty well. As usual, my choices are just for fun since I am a panel member, though I will pony up the liquid proceeds from this post to boost the monthly prize pool. Without further ado...

This months topic is FAVOURITE AUTHORS

My Nominations are:

Nomination Number One

Stephen King

My Reasons for the Nomination

I think we've had multiple conversations about this legend in our Top 3 discord chat room, as quite a few of us enjoy reading King's works. As @tryskele pointed out in her entry post, his output is so epic it is hard not to like at least a few of his works! Though I'm not always big on horror movies, horror stories always seem to pull me in. King just has a way of setting the scene that you just have to see what comes next, even if it makes you almost poop your pants. One of my absolute favorite story collections of his actually lands outside of his usual horror work. I adore the stories "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption" and "The Body". I have a feeling a few other people will pick this prolific author, as well!

IMG_20200103_143459528.jpg

Nomination Number Two

John Irving

My Reasons for the Nomination

Irving is another one that should be pretty well known, with works like "A Prayer for Owen Meany", "The Cider House Rules", and of course "The World According to Garp" in his collection. I think what draws me to his work is that his characters are always "flawed" (by societal norms at least) in some way that makes them a bit tragic, but also very real. He tackles abortion and adoption, isolation, loss, love and lust, and just about anything else related to the human condition. I actually have not read his most recent two novels, so perhaps I have just added to my own reading list!

IMG_20200103_143420094.jpg

Nomination Number Three

Ken Follett

My Reasons for the Nomination

Follett makes the cut for his captivating blend of storytelling along with rigid historical accuracy. I'm not always a fan of historical fiction, but I've enjoyed how skillfully he weaves his story lines in with actual past events. I actually have only scratched the surface of his collection, but I have read "Pillars of the Earth" and the Century Trilogy of books twice. I'm sure once I pick up some of his spy thrillers I will enjoy them just as much!

Yesss! The more the merrier... and means more reading ideas for me! I was actually thinking about making reading for pleasure a priority again as one of my 2020 health goals. Gotta work on that post next...πŸ˜‰

Ditto! Although whether it'll happen is another story. Like finishing my crochet blanket...which @foxyspirit knows about...

I may have to jump on this one!! I must read every night before I go to sleep. I love reading and even last night at 3 am, I read for 20 minutes, but, I read. :)

I love your choices, Stephen King has been a favorite of mine since forever, but, I have moved away from horror movies (long ago and far away) But, I do love the way he sets the scene and walks me through it all. He is a master at that! So for those reasons, I like him.

Cider House Rules really pulled me close to John Irving and I loved The World According to Garp. I also was too lazy to use quotes. LOL

I am trying to think who I would pick because I love so many... and I don't mind reading a good one over. Let's see if we can get a few more involved here! I'm taking this home with me!

Ken Follet, undoubtedly because his master piece "Pillars of the earth". Now I am reading the 3rd book of the trilogy and I am enjoying it so much as well.

Before anything: love that the "u" wasn't allowed to escape...🀭

I have read all of those authors at different "phases" but none of them for years. I've not heard of that Follet series - I should keep an eye out for it.

I haven't put pen(cil) to paper yet and am having mental debates. Like you, there are books I re-read. And like @dswigle, I never turn out the light without reading a paragraph or two.

Haha, I figUred a few would appreciate that. 😜 I actually just finished reading that series again. It basically covers the bulk of the 20th century--from WWI to the Berlin Wall coming down.

I hope you find some time between scoring updates to dazzle us with your current picks. πŸ˜‰

Such great choices! I love all of them too. I've got to check the deadline on this contest and get mine in. Totally agree with you about Irving's flawed characters. It's what makes them interesting and compels us to keep reading!

He's like so many levels higher than any other writers.
Keeps me all hocked in 24/7/365

Thank you for spelling "favourite" correctly haha!

Some popular choices here P2P, seems like King is...well... King (living up to his name I'd say!)

I'll try and get mine out tomorrow but I will need to get my thinking cap on as I know the books that have had an impact but there are many authors... it's as tough for the panel as it is for the contenders!

Haha, yep, you've all made me an hono(u)rable Brit. I'm sure you'll come up with some solid choices, as well. My list is already growing by leaps and bounds--might just have enough to keep me going all year long!

It's having the time to read the books that I struggle with. Have had two big cosmology books on my bedside table the last year but just not had a chance to read the first two chapters yet! Hoping to have a bit of time now things look to be less crazy so it might spark my interest in getting back to the books again - hopefully!

I enjoyed your writeup, @plantstoplanks. Great choices with King and Irving. I don’t normally like horror but some of King’s stories I have liked and also the movie/tv version. Pet Seminary was scary. I just watched it on TV a few weeks ago and still scary even though I knew the story.
John Irving’s the World According to Garp and the Cider House Rules were two good ones I read.
Hubby has read some of Ken Follett but I haven’t yet.

I just finished my ebook "dark places" by Gillian Flynn the other day but looking at those hard covers makes me want to go back to the good old school way of reading, hard covers. I miss the smell of the pages.

Anyways, three of my favorite authors are Danielle Steel, Lowis Lowry & James Patterson. I enjoyed reading their books because the words they use are easy for me to comprehend. 😊

Nice choices,

King was one of the authors I thought about adding. I suspect him to be high on the dpoll.

I have expected to see Stephen King pop up in your list :P I think I am starting to know you dear friend ^_^ hehe.

I have not read the other books but do look interesting, especially the last trilogy, just going by title. I know we are not to judge a book by its cover, but when it has a great title, it grabs my attention :P

Haha, yep, couldn't leave King out. Though as always reading through everyone else's I am reminded of so many other authors I really enjoy!

That Ken Follett series is great. It's a nice mix of history and great story-telling. It follows the same families throughout the century and how they interact with politics, war and social issues. Though I do think Pillars of the Earth might be higher on my list of his work. :)

I love it when the authors keep the same people going. when meeting the characters, we get right in to it with them.
