Episode: Part 20

The gunshots and the screaming ended simultaneously, adding adrenaline to the brothers as they ran toward their sister and the others. The vision they saw was confusing. Quentin and Quinton were standing up in the front of the cart holding shotguns. They were aiming at what looked like a pile of meat. They were shaking violently. Rose and Miss Vivian were sitting behind them, eyes locked on the twins' quarry. They were holding on to each other tightly and they apoeared to be shaking as well.

"Is everyone ok? Are you hurt?" Gage asked as he arrived.He was trying to decipher the pile on the ground, but, he couldn't figure out what it was. "What the heck happened here?"

Rose was the first to break the silence. "They were people, but, they weren't alive, they came for us. The twins shot them. They were dead already, I am sure of it."

"We need to go, now." Insisted Alex, then to Larry, "we can give you a ride to the next town or wherever you need to go, but, we have to leave your wagon."

"I agree," said Miss Vivian, "we will need to sleep inside from now on."

"Our place is just a mile away," said Larry, "you are all welcome to stay tonight. We can come back for the wagon when we are armed." He looked again at the heap of deceased former people and swallowed hard.

They loaded the cart with everyone and started on their way to Larry's place. He told them it was a small homestead of just four acres. "The doors have bolts and the windows have shutters, so, we should be safe."

It was twilight by the time they reached the homestead, lightening bugs flew in patches in the waning light. The homestead was beautiful, everywhere Rose looked, there was green. Small livestock roamed around freely, a couple chickens here, a goat there.

As they locked the doors and windows that night, there was still much confusion about the events of the day, but, everyone had one thing crystal clear. The dead had risen.
