Episode: Part 13

They stayed at Jeb's house. There was no hotel or inn in this small town because they had no visitors. Jeb's was a large old plantation house. Jeb was a tobacco farmer before the Episode. He used to farm thousands of acres, but he had let the forest claim all but a handful that he always grew his food in. The house was all white, it stood out brightly from the trees and it felt good here. The furniture was mostly hand made.

Jeb wasn't the elected leader of the town, whose name used to be Adams, but, they had renamed Hopeville. Adams had been named after a despotic commercial tobacco company owner that had all the farmers working for him. His brother in law had been the Sheriff of Adams and they ran a protection racket together against the farmers. The farmers had to pay most of their crop profit or face Adams' wrath in the form of hired thugs with badges. When God had burnt them all, the town had a new sense of hope, thus Hopeville. The people of Hopeville looked up to Jeb because he was the only one who ever stood up to Adams. He had the idea of arming his sharecroppers and telling them to shoot at anyone who came on the farm. Most of the other farmers didn't have as big a farm as Jeb, so, could not afford that solution or were too afraid to try it.

Rose and her brothers stayed the first night at Jeb's after a long day of greeting the people who came to see them, nearly everyone, Jeb told them. Alex took to bed early, he couldn't hold his eyes open.

Being touched by the Divine was a taxing business. Rose thought of it like you had the weight of the entire world pushing you in the right direction. It was wonderful and terrifying at once. You have control, but, not total control. It exhaustd Rose to do this, but, she was glad to be of service.

Satan was pissed. "How could one moron with a gun take out four trained killers?!" He had been watching Rose since his water minions had reported the incident at the rope bridge.

He hated her so much! He had sent these men to dispose of her and her do gooder brothers. God was working through these ones, no doubt. He would have to use more guile then he had. He would have to catch them unaware. He would have to get them when their guard was down. He would get them while they slept!

Satan sent for his minions.

Ah, the juices are flowing again.
Start with a beer or two to really get them going.

I haven't had a drink in about a year. I don't have a problem, I just don't have the taste for it anymore. Maybe I should start back up, though, I don't know about my regularity, lol.

In my degenerative younger ages "a beer or two" was always the fix to anything.
Whether it actually worked or not, who knows, it was just a saying of the time.
