#worldcoinwednesday: 1934 Bulgarian Silver 100 Leva Business Strike

” Blackbirds tend to like shiny objects” ~ The Bloody Raven

This coin doesn’t really fall into my collecting sphere of interest but its silver and it fits ideally with @silverd510’s #worldcoinwednesday tag so let’s go with this while I wait for my next Mexican coin to arrive in the mail. Checking my Ebay action…..Bilge Rats! I got royally sniped! We're just gonna have to wait a little longer.
Anyway we’re heading to 1930s Bulgaria in Europe!

P
So what was happening in Bulgaria around 1934?

1934 Bulgaria 100 Leva
1
Obverse: Tsar Boris III, BORIS III TSAR OF THE BULGARIANS
Silver 0.500, 20g
34mm Diameter, 2.8mm Thickness

Born in 1894, Boris III became Tsar in 1918 when his of Ferdinand I, assumed responsibility for Bulgaria’s part in their loss in World War I and abdicated his power. Not only that but he also put Bulgaria on the hook for their loss in the Balkan’s war prior to WW I.
Tsar Boris III assumed power and the mess handed over to him from his Father along with the imposed War Reparations in the form of a huge debt and the loss of territory to their neighbors.

Oddly enough Boris II was baptized into the Greek Orthodox faith as part of Ferdinand’s desire to restore political relations with Russia. This had repercussions and drew the ire of Ferdinand’s wife who is Catholic along with the majority of their immediate relatives. So in 1934 Bulgaria and the USSR finally establish diplomatic relations, however that relations will be seriously tested.

Reverse: 100 Leva 1934, Rose and Grain heads
Mintage of 2,505,777
Reference KM# 45, Schön# 47

After giving up on ever recovering the former Bulgarian territories Boris III’s policy was for is country to avoid conflict, stay out of trouble, and steer towards resolution of mutual disputes by peaceful means by signing onto the Balkan’s Pact. Bulgaria is imposed a size limit of her army and therefore will remain neutral as part of the deal. That was tested when Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich came knocking on the door.

In the early years of World War 2, powerful lobby groups forced Boris III to ally Bulgaria with the Axis; in addition the Germans promised restoring the former lost Bulgarian lands, and then some, back to Bulgaria. And in return, full cooperation with the German forces. A tempting offer but will he give in?

1934 Bulgaria 100 Leva
1
Edge Lettering: БОЖЕ ПАЗИ БЪЛГАРИЯ
Translated as: God save Bulgaria

Stuck between a rock and a hard place!
Especially when the Germans demanded that the Tsar declare war against Germany’s enemies and that the regular Bulgarian forces to be sent to the Eastern front to fight the USSR!
The Tsar did declare war, but it was merely a symbolic one.

Despite Hitler’s demands and threats the Tsar stood fast and refused to send Bulgarian regulars to fight the USSR as many Bulgarians had Russian roots and sentiments as well as his father’s legacy. He also refuse Hitler’s orders to deport Bulgarian Jews to German Concentration camps in Poland and Germany insisting that Bulgaria needed them for labor crews to rebuild infrastructure and thus sparing them from certain death.

In August 1943 following a stormy meeting with the Germans, Tsar Boris III died form an apparent heart attack, the postmortem indicated that he died from a slow poison and concluded it as an assassination.
Boris III is succeeded by his young son Simeon II.

And for my friends that enjoy the fancy Fiat

1993 Bulgaria 500 Leva

Front: Bulgarian composer Dobri Hristov (1875 - 1941)
Issued by the Bulgarian National Bank

Like all Fiat currency this particular note series was eventually withdrawn on December 31st, 1999 due to High Inflation and a newer series was issued moving the decimal place three places to the left thereby revaluing this 500 Leva note into a new 0.5 Leva note.

Thanks Sis, I'll be working on other coins while waiting for another Mexican coin to continue Sister Mordecai and Argénta Savioré. I have a terrible shortage of Mexicoins.
The 500 Leva banknote was on loan from Punkys Dad and a nice match for the coin.
Not a very attractive coin but quite the story about the Tsar of Bulgaria. Unlike Ferdinand, Bulgarians should be proud of Boris III.
Always with love, 🌺🤗💝🌹

This coin seemed so ordinary in it's design almost typical of USSR styled socialist art and not really appealing added that its only .500 silver whereas most European have a higher fineness.
The gem in the rough was the amazing story of this unassuming aristocrat from what most European gentry would considered Bulgaria second rate and his father Ferdinand considered a "Loser".
A movie should be made of Tsar Boris III of Bulgaria.

I looked at this coin, yes it's only half silver, not really pretty and not even shiny. But the real life story of this whimpy looking king is amazing! Thanks for commenting @ronaldoavelino

High inflation.....I never heard if such a thing @kerrislravenhill ???🤔😏
Very interesting story about how the Germans were trying to pull his country into the War!

Boris III met Hitler on a number of occasions and witnesses recall a lot of anger and heat Hitler put on the Tsar to comply. He knew what happened to neighboring Poland and various other countries can happen to Bulgaria too so he'd rather endure allied bombing than that of the Germans.
I'm sure Boris believed have been shot anytime by Hitler himself as Bulgaria's alliance was merely symbolic.
High Inflation, you know how governments pay off unpayable debt. 📉

I'm glad I got a translation on that lettering from Numista.
To me this Coin isn't really very attractive with it's quasi Soviet union styled art but the story about the Tsar is what made this coin so interesting.

I have a 100 LEVA coin, too, a 1930 mintage with the wreath on the back! 😃
So cool that we almost have the same coin! 😁

It's a small world! KM# 43 The coin that preceded my 1934 Coin.
Personally, I think the 1930 wreath is a better design.
I believe the 1934 version was in part to close ties with Russia/Soviet union as they shared cultural roots. The 1934 hints Soviet Communist style art, a matte finish, only 0.500 fine silver, and not really fancy compared to other European crown sized coins. However, it was the history about Boris III that I find fascinating.
Did you ever posted your 1930 coin?

When I first looked at this coin It looked as if it didn't have anything special about it.
But History says different.
A movie should be made about this unassuming King of Bulgaria.
Boris III's got my vote for the 'Schindler's List' Award.
