Four weeks powerdown; Proposal votes in witness perspective

SPS brought a new kind of "poll" technique for community where we can vote for different kind of decisions.

Websites like steemproposals.com already gives out the voter information and support levels but I was curious about witnesses and their positions regarding the parameter change proposal.

Other witnesses who are not in this list didn't cast a vote, or there is a discrepancy with their witness accounts and voter accounts. The Python script to fetch this data can be found at this Github GIST.

Also, beware, only witnesses in the top100 are taken into account.

If the T100 are so in favour, why hasn't it happened yet? Surely it's not difficult to change the code from 13 to 4?
Hope life is treating you well fella.

Hard forks require every single node to update, including exchanges. As such they require a good amount of lead time, testing, etc. They also can't be done too often or the repeated mandatory updates become a big burden.

The next planned hard fork is intended to include the new SMT functionality, which is a major piece of development and is still undergoing testing. When it is ready to move toward deployment, the final build approved by witnesses will either include the power down change or not.

In short, the power down change itself is very simple, but it still has to wait for the rest of the update to be ready.

Brilliant. Thanks for taking the time and giving a simple 'user' a concise and understandable answer.
Cheers @smooth :-)

The 13 weeks powerdown is the only reason preventing me from doing power-ups sadly :(
I hope witnesses against the change will rethink that.

Let's see what happens :)

Why do you need 4 weeks to power up? (Totally ok, I'm just curious about the motive.)

I would like to powerdown fast. For example when new Steem dapp/game comes out and I need liquid Steem to spend them on.
It is 2020 and Steem isnt about blogging only.

The main reasons for voting against the change to 4 weeks powerdown is

  • security concerns
  • pure speculators (i.e. not interested in participating in the social aspects of the platform - posts/comments/upvotes) can simply stay liquid
  • I consider (in)vesting as a middle(long)-term project, therefore, the current 13 weeks doesn't look like a problem (to me). You cannot have your cake and eat it too.

Finally, I really believe we should focus on more important topics/features like reducing inflation, mass onboarding, NFTs, ...
