Wednesday Walk goes Wild!

avatar
(Edited)

Over on Chincoteague Island and despite the rain, no less while this girl is getting ready to go camping in the sweltering heat, read that as almost 100 degrees, all because tradition has it. I have never been a slave to fashion or trends that are in vogue. Yet, traditions may not be broken nor toyed with. Not since the beginning of time.

I'm pretty sure it is in the bible somewhere. Let me know when you find it.

So there, you have it. Walking around Chincoteague Island, checking out places to pitch my tent, also catching a few peeks of the new ponies born this spring. In a few days, it will all start, as we welcome in another year of the Annual Pony Swim and this post is for #WednesdayWalk with @tattoodjay. Don't step on tradition.

*It is so hard to accessorize your ponies properly. The beauty is not so much in the way they frolic in the tidewaters, but more the loveliness of their locks, many growing long enough to touch the ground. This is for my #WednesdayWalk with @tattoodjay, If you post to this challenge, drop your link here

We walk down the main street and everything there are all things pony. Books, signs, saddlery stores, and even trailers to haul your ponies. Oh, yes! For Ninety-three years, everything has been that way. Go back and read about traditions if you don't remember.

And we continue down the street, to see what we can see.

In the winter, the entire island shuts down and the locals get their life back. Oh, but, while it is in season, it is a wonderful little place. Did I tell you that it is all things pony here on the island?

Bicycles are highly recommended for getting around. It is the only way unless you hop the trolley. The traffic can be worse than New York City because there is usually one way there and one way back route to contend with. But, hey! You'll be fit as a fiddle in no time.

And don't forget to watch out for the Horses! And yes, sometimes they do get in the street or on the beach or places they don't belong. It happens.

Flowers. There must always be flowers. One more set of flowers! I promise! This picture is dedicated to #WednesdayYellow #ColorChallenge by @Kalemandra! The one who colors my every day.

busy 12.jpg

We step up into the trolley that is ironically called the Pony Express, and go down the street. It's early and yet, everything in the town is open. The internet is a busy place right now, here on the island, so I (im)patiently waited to post this. A true test in faith.

2.jpg

And just like that this walk is done! So glad you could come along. Share your walk with us, we'd like to see what you got to see and where you chose to walk. I hope you had a fabulous time and I think we should meet up here again next week! Until then, keep on Steeming!!!

My little Henry was bought at auction a few years back. There are feral (wild) ponies that live on Federal Land on Assateague Island. They live off the land, so it is important that they cull the herd, to ensure they won't starve. So, every year, they have an auction and raise money for the Fire Department.

¸.♥´¸.•♥*¨) Let the sun shine in on your life
So the joy may touch your soul

(¸.•´♥ (¸.•´ ♥

Don't forget to come back for the Pony Swim, which will be next Wednesday !See you there!

Thank you for visiting my post 💖 Because of you, I come back to post, again and again, I am encouraged by you, for the time you take to visit and comment. For all of these reasons, I am eternally grateful. We live in a wonderful world and some days, it is not as easy to see, how beautiful it can really be. If you have a choice in your day, choose to be kind. Kindness counts. Wherever you go, whatever you do.

I always post this poem down at the bottom of my posts. It is one that has become so near and dear to my heart. I only post the most famous part of it, but, wanted to post it in its entirety today.

they set my aunts house on fire
i cried the way women on tv do
folding at the middle
like a five pound note.
i called the boy who use to love me
tried to ‘okay’ my voice
i said hello
he said warsan, what’s wrong, what’s happened?

i’ve been praying,
and these are what my prayers look like;
dear god
i come from two countries
one is thirsty
the other is on fire
both need water.

later that night
i held an atlas in my lap
ran my fingers across the whole world
and whispered,
"where does it hurt?"
it answered,

"everywhere"
"everywhere"
"everywhere"

Well it probably would not mess with tradition too much if you traded in that tent and got a nice RV with AC LOL! I must say it does sound like a fun filled tradition! That quaint town will give you plenty to photograph! Blog materiel for a long time coming! Well Henry is quite the ham - for a horse! That shot is really a classic! What a fun walk and thanks for sharing it!

Well you know that I'm never one to step on tradition! Even though it's going to be hot as blazes, I'm still going to go out and if I begin to die just a little, I will give into one of those 3 or $400 a night hotels. It's only been in the last couple years where it's been close to a hundred degrees so perhaps the weatherman will have been drinking the Kool-Aid listening to the rest of the world say how hot it's going to be and jumped on board. Perhaps this is just a dream and it'll be 80° and we'll all be smiling as we're watching the horses swim to shore. That's my truth and I'm sticking to it. In actuality, if it is 100 degrees over the weekend Oh, I will probably come home for one day to soak up some of that air conditioning and go back for the swim the next day. I think I'm just becoming a weenie.

Ha! I see my comment earned a !rip lol. I guess it means you don't give a rip about what I say... Well no, actually it means it IS worth a rip lol.

Seriously though I would drive home to get some AC. Hard to put a value on a good night's sleep! I would say that and a shower are surely worth it!

Have you never been camping? Oh, they even have showers there! :) Home is a few hours away and after a day in the sun, not really wanting to do the slow crawl home. But, I promise I won't die and I may come home in between for a day.

Well does a motor home count as camping? We stayed in a camp ground and had a camp fire? I mean i am in small town USA that almost counts as camping I think!

Enjoyed your post, the first one on my first day back home from hospital (just 5 days home).
It looks like a great place. We have an island belonging to the Netherlands too where it is bikes and walking only. No trolley. I loved it there. It is called Schiermonnikoog, but no ponies.

Love the poem on the bottom. 💕

Well, I guess I didn't know that you were going to the hospital and so I hope that all is well with you. I'm glad that you are home, hopefully resting and feeling a little bit better. Isn't it so nice to have these places that have no cars and only bikes and pedestrians. When I was in Holland cello we didn't use our vehicle hardly at all but we biked everywhere that we went, within reason of course. This place has the trolley but the trolley only work seasonally and mostly in the summer because the sun guests are a little bit lazy here in life and don't want to walk everywhere. So they put out a trolley to keep their tourist trade going and the rest of us mere mortals pedal away. LOL I hope you are having a most wonderful day and thank you for stopping in and saying hello, leaving your words behind.

Denise, even if you don't tell us that it is all about pony island, we could tell! Hahaha! 😂😂😂 But kidding aside, it is such a pretty place to walk around. Thank you for taking us there. 😍

Will anyone could tell it's all about the ponies! Right? And you are right, if you did not know that this island was all about its wild ponies, you would have to be living in your own world. It is a nice place and I love going there and it's not that far from where I live so, it makes for a nice little break in life. I hope you have a most wonderful day and I want to thank you for stopping by and for all the support that you show me.

What a gorgeous Wednesday Walk, such a quaint place! Camping...well I used to do that but nowadays it just seems like such a schlepp to do all that packing! But it's great fun when everything is all set up not so :)

When it comes to Camping, I could actually say that I'm a minimalist and bring very little with me, only the necessity. That probably makes me a lazy camper but it works and it doesn't seem like such a big deal when I take very little. I find that I used to overpack and bring so much stuff they made it not worth it in the end. LOL will thank you for stopping by and I hope you have a most wonderful day.

It is a really fun place and the times that the ponies run the Stray are actually fun. When you're laying on the beach and one walks in your path oh, it's not a common sight but it really puts a smile to my cease. Thank you so much for stopping by and dropping a hello and a kind of comment. I know it's going to be hot no matter what I do but that is par for the time of year. Have a great day!

I can guarantee you that if you had someone come up to you and say hi with their cold nose, you would scream like a little girl. In that would be because you have your eyes closed as you're sunning and that would be an unusual feeling to have. LOL

Well, while I'm not excited about the rain and the extremely hot weather, I can say that the thought of another Pony swim pretty much excites me. I have no idea why I can watch this time and time again but it's always a little bit different, the horses swimming in the water across the channel is a magnificent sight and we got Henry there, so it makes it all kind of fun. I love wandering through the island and sneaking a peek at the ponies as they weed through the title grasses, living life. Anyway, think of me as I am having sketchy internet and Truce hot weather and I'll try not to take your name in vain. Just kidding. Maybe. Thank you as always for coming by and leaving such wonderful comments and I want to thank you for being the best partner in crime!

NO worries about taking my name in vain it happens to me a lot lOL

When I say call but heard, what I mean is that they take the young ones that will still be able to transition over to a domestic life and sell them at auction. That is how I got mine and he is one of the smartest I have ever seen. They really are a smart breed and I suppose living in the wild you would have to be.

Thanks for stopping by and for your interest in these wild ponies. I hope you have a most wonderful day!

So, I've seen my share of hot and gross sweaty oh, and I'm hoping that I'm going to come out smelling like roses. LOL

I will admit that Henry does make some of the funniest faces and that being said, when a horse does this he is actually yawning. LOL I hate to admit that because it always looks like a smile to me, but the fact is he was bored of me giving him a bath. The annual Pony swim, which I will be going to next Wednesday is a couple hours from where I live but it's always worth the effort because it's so much fun. I can hardly wait to go and only hope that the temperatures cool down a little bit because it's brutal standing out there in the sun on the water watching them swim across the islands. All in all I have my vision of you pedaling furiously down the streets of Chincoteague in your little pink bicycle. Oh, I wish you were in my head and seeing what I see! LOL

You are so adorable! Yes! A pony swim because they all live in the wild on an island that cannot keep supporting as many as they produce. So they swim them from one Island to the other and hold an auction to call the crowd. I actually bought my little guy Henry at 1 a few years back and they are one of the smartest breeds ever. I do love the little town that they hold the auction in, and everything there is themed Pony. I guess that's not a bad way to go! Thank you for dropping by and hopefully if I don't die out there before the swim because it's supposed to be in the extreme temperatures, I will bring back enough photos to make everybody happy! Thank you so much for stopping by and leaving a few words and I just love when you visit! Have a nice day! @ackhoo

Surprisingly, most of the small towns on the East Coast are similar with the older buildings and keeping things simple.

Thanks, Dan. I have done quite a few of these posts because it is close to the house I have on the Shore. I was happy to have discovered it when I bought the house about ten years ago.

That is where my pony came from. :)

Pretty cool. There's an island off the coast of Georgia with wild ponies. How do they go about "culling" other than auction?

0

0.000
avatar

They don't. Cumberland Islands horses manage themselves and are actually only numbering about 150 on the entire island. They usually live 9-10 years, so their growth is slowed down by that. I lived on Jekyll Island for a year and went there.

So their culling is by nature. Thanks for stopping by!

"Well, Willll-bur", said in a most horsine voice. I think that is a classic, all the pony stuff. If you're going to do something, do it up right, I always say. Looks like a lot of fun, except the sweltering in the sleeping bag part. Only thing worse, doing it on a beach, with sand everywhere. I hope you are on some sort of platform, off the beach.
I can certainly relate to the whole tradition thing, my friends used to give me grief for driving the same way across town every time. Maybe that's not quite the same.
All the bikes and horses remind me of Macinac Island, up by OGP way. Long ago. Well, hope your night is a good one. Cheers from out yonder.
