Treasure Hunters Find A Fortune Worth Of Coins In A Field

avatar

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

I love this kind of story because this can happen to anyone. The great sir @nickyhavey calls me Lord Fluffton because of the fluff pieces I post and I reckon I earned the title. lol.

I love feel-good stories. This couple in England, (and I'm sure sir nickyhavey and the other great Brittish Steemians already know this story) were out in a farmer's field Northeast of Somerset with their metal detectors when their machines alerted them to this hoard.

Here's Lisa Grace(what a wonderful name) with her detector, it looks state-of-the-art:

source

And here's Adam Staples with his:

xw91ahleaz.jpg
source

It's 2,571 silver coins, they're King Harold II pennies from the end of Anglo-Saxon England and William the Conqueror coins. The coins are extremely rare because King Harold was king for only 9 months.

I guess he was leading his army at the Battle of Hastings and got shot in the eye with an arrow. So his reign got cut short.

These coins are a thousand years old! To me living in a country that's only 250 years old it boggles my mind. Many of them are in perfect condition and they're worth a fortune.

England has a great system set up for treasure hunters

According to the law, the couple turned them over to the proper government department which is called the local finds liaison officer who then gave them to the British Museum in London to evaluate.

The rough estimate of value is 5 million dollars! The way it works in England is that if the museum rates them as Treasure, then the couple will be paid the value of the coins in pounds.

Here's the happy and soon to be rich couple(probably dreaming of investing in Steem):

9ezhqnfam4.jpg
source

If the museum doesn't rate them as Treasure, then they get the coins back and they can sell them on their own. Also, if the coins are rated as treasure, the couple has to split the value of the coins with the land owner 50/50.

So either way they're going to be millionaires! I'd like to know if this find was total luck or if they had reason to believe there was treasure there.

They've been very tight-lipped so far concerning details, even in their interview with Treasure Hunting magazine where they made the cover:

qya89rlk1k.jpg
source

The other major find was astounding as well

Back in 2009 an unemployed coffin factory worker was down on his luck, 55 years old, no future prospects...when he was out in a farm field with an old detector he'd bought many years before for 2.50 pounds.

It alerted him to a hoard of gold jewelry, crosses, sword hilts, and jewels worth 5 million dollars! That was outside Staffordshire, England.

I love it when regular working class people strike it rich. And as old as Europe is, there has to be untold buried treasure there!

Let me know if you're a treasure hunter. I know the great sir @balticbadger in Germany uses his detector.

Thanks for reading folks, God bless you all!

Wow! Wouldn't that be something awesome! I can't help but wonder what items those coins were used to buy, and whose hands they passed through. So much untold history sitting there :) That's a great story

Howdy tamaralovelace! It's amazing to think about isn't it? They said they think these were owned by a wealthy business person or part of the royalty because they were worth alot even back then and since they had no banks people would often hide their wealth. They must have died before they were able to go back for it and none of the heirs knew about it either.

Howdy sir rossfletcher! You never know do you? I bet you see alot of people with metal detectors on the beach?

I do see people looking for treasure! I don't think there are any big buried ones so it's coins, and the big score would be jewelry

Maybe you can do that when you retire sir rossfletcher. I bet they find diamond rings or earrings every once in a while.

That stereotype is pretty accurate. Next Tuesday after the holiday will probably be a good day for it

How awesome is that! Can you imagine the thrill?? I have a metal detector that I use occasionally with my kids and we're lucky to find a bottle cap.

lol! I guess lots of people use them in parks and at the beach looking for lost ear rings and finger rings and so forth but in England, as old as it is, your chances there are much better of finding something of value.

That would be such a shock to find though! And it can happen to anyone apparently, at least in an ancient area like that.

That would be so cool! There is a British TV show called 'Detectorists'. I watched it on Amazon at the recommendation of friends who had loved it. It's about two friends who share a passion for metal detecting and it made me wish I could go metal detecting! I can't imagine how thrilling it must be to find a treasure!

Oh I know, especially if you are over in an ancient country like England. That makes sense to have a show like that over there, you never know! Over here, except for battle fields looking for old bullets I think parks and beaches is where everyone looks.

Oh, in your backyard or in behind your house? Our country isn't old enough. The ancient countries that existed before banks seem to have treasure hidden everywhere! "ring tabs from a beer can!" lol.

Yes, the spring/pond in my yard. This property was used as a picnic grounds in the late 1800s and I would have expected them to find something. I'm glad they made pop tops so that they did not detach from the can.

I had forgotten all about that old style of pop tops until you said something!

That's very true, they were so thin and sharp! How is your day going so far? The summers are so short up there that I'd be tempted to do steemit part time and run around outside or to the parks everyday unless it was raining, then prepare to be shut in for a long winter!

I was outside early this morning with my phone and my camera looking at posts and trying to get a good picture of a bird for today's featheredFriday. I was unsuccessful so I am going to have to post a photo I took earlier this year. It is hard to get a bird photo with the leaves on the trees. But I know many of them will begin heading south soon so I will keep trying!

Oh I hate to hear that the birds will be heading South soon! Dang. lol. I got so busy working outside this afternoon and evening that I didn't remember to send my post until 7:30! so I just said heck with it, I'll send it in the early afternoon tomorrow.

I ought to save up for a metal detector one day! But I don’t want to dig the ground!

0

I agree about diggin holes but if the metal detector went crazy I would be so anxious to see what it was I'd turn into a ditch digger pretty fast! Korea is such an old country, odds are that there might be alot of hidden or lost coins or treasure over there!

0

Also unexploded old bombs from the Second World War! I would look at old areas where there were lots of fightings among the tribes! Warriors and people lost their previous belongings at warring areas.

In the jungles along the border, many land mines are still hidden along the trail!

0

Wow sir kaminchan, how would you know if you could dig down with a shovel then? I mean, what if it's a land mine?
But at the same time, yes if there was lots of fighting people would bury their valuables wouldn't they?

That's one more reason I miss living in Europe. Not that I was a treasure hunter, but even having buildings and ruins that old around is amazing. Of course, out your way there are the remains of Pueblo settlements but, here in Minnesota, the plains natives left little more than arrow points and petroglyphs.

When i lived in southern Spain, I was a half hour's bike ride away from Roman and Moorish ruins, as well as bronze age cave paintings.

Howdy sir fotosdenada! Man, you were able to see some serious stuff in Spain. Yeah most of our country is so young, too young for ancient treasure!

I think you should get yourself a detector and go about in your big piece of land. Maybe you will find something more worthwhile than a buck or two from you posts here on Steem. 😃

Howdy today sir Vincent! well this is just grass lands that has never been settled so I don't think there is anything out here. Maybe a few arrow heads but the detector wouldn't pick those up. It needs to be in an ancient country like yours, just think of the post that would make if you found something valuable!

Some observations: It looks like Lisa Grace likes to have a cold beer, while Adam enjoys a white wine. The second one is that "an unemployed coffin factory worker" would have been great as the life status of a character in a story! 😄

I think the luckiest one is the owner of the land. Imagine waking up and being told you've become a millionaire without warning!

lol! Howdy sir free-reign! Great points there and thank you for always making great points and comments. I agree, the land owner wakes up to find he's rich for doing nothing! Those treasure hunters have probably been hunting for years with not much to show for it until now.

Yeah, they should make a movie about the unemployed coffin factory worker! lol. It's the kind of thing you can't make up.

Greetings Lord Fluffton, we have many beach combers with detectors over here and they collect all kinds of things.
I spoke to one of them and he showed me an old bottle top that he collects.
There's a history about the Kruger gold pound coins that were hidden somewhere and people have been searching for it over the ages.
But no one has been as lucky as the people in your post.
Blessings!

Lord Fluffton! lol..I kind of like that title that sir nickyhavey gave me. I try to earn it. That's very interesting about the hunters using those. Maybe when you go into semi-retirement you'll be out there with yours?

Hi janton, how absolutely fabulous that these couples scored it rich. So great to hear good luck stories. What a buzz it would be to find such valuable coins!

I agree, it would be amazing! And I like that they are just regular working folk. Well the one guy was 55 and unemployed so that's even more amazing and I'm glad that England has a generous system set up so they aren't stealing treasures from the people who spent countless hours out there hunting for them.

0

This is even more fabulous janton. We might all need to move to England before our big coin find, lol.

You have certainly earned your Lord Fluffton title. You do see a few people on the beaches with their metal detectors and I have seen some where I live, wandering around the fields looking for the next treasure.

Well, I'm really tempted to buy another 1,000 STEEM and make myself a dolphin as these prices are just too good to be true! I'd love to be a whale on the platform but will have to be happy with a minnow/dolphin for the time being.

I've heard millionaires that get that way through prizes and good luck squander all their money straight away because they don't think to invest it and make it work for them... it's a shame to see.

0

sir nickyhavey! you're only a thousand steem away from being a Dolphin? wow. That's a significant achievement. Why, are the prices below 20 cents again? I never look at them.
Yes, the big winners of the lotteries have a horrible record of keeping their money! It's crazy.

I moved some crypto holdings over on exchanges and bought some last week when the price hovered a little low. Although should have waited for a flash crash in the last few hours but it was only a couple of £ lost which I'll gain back in curation or posting!

You should look at the prices Lord Janton, it's your investment into STEEM (if you've spent any money that is). I may buy some more but my fiat spending on crypto this month has reached its limit so will need to wait for next month's pay day before proceeding.

Well look at the mover and shaker! Just let me know the next time you get ready to buy some, that way I'll know the price is low. One of these days it's not supposed to be low though! lol. It's supposed to be somewhat climbing.

Late afternoon Cowboy! Prince Edward Island was discovered by Jacques Cartier in 1534, but was not settled permanently until the 1700s.
The area I’m in was mainly settled by Irish immigrants Still under English rules. The way I see it, the people were so poor they hung on to every penny for dear life. There wouldn’t be any treasure left in the ground. 😂

I imagine there would be people into dowsing who could use a pendulum to find amazing treasures too.

I'm from the UK and have heard of big finds over the years as there's a lot of treasure here that has been lost over the centuries and only a fraction of it has been found so far. I'm surprised that this land isn't full of treasure hunters from around the world, but then not all farmers want people trampling all over their fields

Howdy sir wales! that's a great point too, you have to get permission to search someone's field I would think. Yes, a very interesting point too about so much still hidden. I'd think Ireland, Wales and England would be similar since all are ancient and they didn't have banks a thousand years ago.

I might be tempted to get me a detector if I was you sir wales!

-blushes- aww, I always feel a little bit special when someone thanks me for commenting! I won't let that get to my head though but really I'm just a minnow, nothing special about me!

I am a proud Canadian who was born in Manitoba, loved it best in Kenora Ontario, and is now living the universes torcher here in a smaller town in Alberta. Hate Alberta.

I'd rather experience Hardfork20 one-hundred times than have to live here another year.

*My opinion on HF20 is based on things I've read, seen or heard.. I was not here for first hand experience back then.

Oh, another Canadian! I'm sorry to hear that. lol..just teasing! I love our Canadian friends and I'm so thankful that we have you as our Northern neighbors. I'm not that familiar with the different provinces though, what's wrong with Alberta?

Depends where in Alberta I'm sure.. Well, coming from friendly Manitoba, to easy going lake country in Ontario, this town I'm in now was built around the oil fields and by the oil workers.. A very different culture here, very foreign like people (not talking about foreigners, lol).. It's just crazy how rude, ignorant, and close minded the people who live here are.

Anyone I talk to who doesn't end up being like that - turns out they weren't born here LOL. There is something in the water here I think...

lol! Howdy again kharma.scribbles! By the way, that's quite a username you have, is there a meaning to that or is it just random to make people wonder about you? lol.
Did you try to call me today? I got a call from Alberta! I'm like.."who in tarnation is callin me from Alberta???" That was right after I found out you were there. lol.

Anyway, sorry it's so bad there, sounds like the whole place needs an attitude adjustment. A bunch of rough necks can be hard to tolerate. Rough, tough, arrogant, etc.

What brought you there, I mean you are there almost against your will like for work or something right?

@janton - don't let @nickyhavey give you crap for posting feel-good stories. In these days of gloom and doom and negativity a feel-good story is most welcome. I am exceedingly happy for these complete strangers (and what about the lucky landowners who will get half the value - through no effort other than owning the land!) I'm all for the average person getting ahead! I just hope they fare better than the usual big money lottery winners in the US - broke in a year no matter how much money they won.

Howdy blueeyes8960! Ain't that true about the lottery winners, they have a horrible record of keeping their wealth intact! I think these people look pretty mature, I bet they can handle it. I think they've been hunting for a long time and probably had made plans for what to do when they strike it rich!

And I love the fact that they are regular woking folk too, commoners like most of us. Good point about the land owner, the biggest winner. Waking up to find that by doing nothing he's rich! lol.

Howdy again owasco! I too was surprised the England has such a generous program for the treasure hunters. Are you in upper state NY? What's wrong with the area you're in?

Laws! Every minute there's a new law governing regular citizens, making it harder and harder to be law abiding. NYS is democrat controlled, so this authoritarianism has nothing to do with trump. I am actually a bit afraid and want to leave the state. Same crap is going on in other states, but NY is at the forefront.

Oh I see, got it. That sucks big time. It's the reason so many or leaving NY. Our second largest donor of migrants is from New York, California is first. We have over a thousand people a day moving into Texas, mostly liberals from those two states. So Texas is changing.
Is there a way that you can move?

Yes and Texas is on my list of possibilities. Tennessee (nashville) is another. Is there any talk of mandatory vaccines in Texas? I have vaccinated, but I believe it is a person's right to refuse any medical treatment and find these laws very dangerous.

I haven't looked into the state of mandatory vaccines in Texas but I totally agree with you. It's alarming what they are pushing for. I love the thought of Tennessee also, especially the weather there, not so hot and they're quite conservative.

My dad was a metal detector and of course, he let us kids have a go at it. It was mundane work until you found your first treasure!

I cannot imagine the thrill those two had when coming across that!!! Hello!!! I guess here in the States i you found that on someone else property, it would be the owners, wouldn't it?

What if the owner buried it there for himself? :)

Just joshing you! Good for them!!

Howdy dswigle! That's a great question about a big find here in the states. I bet each state has different laws about it. And I think sometimes there's a battle for who gets the treasure. Thanks so much for commenting and for the tip!

Just imagine what people might find in America 1,000 years from now. If we all live that long.

lol! Howdy sir blockurator! Yes, if the human race lasts that long? Exactly. Well, with everything going digital then I'd think actual gold, silver and jewels treasures would be even more rare and valuable. That's a great point sir blockurator, thanks for commenting!

This is awesome @janton. I agree, it's great when an 'average' person makes a find like this. Believe it or not there are still hundreds of treasures in the UK. Things sink, covered in the soft ground even from sitting. Who knows what lurks under the soil.

Howdy tryskele! Yes, someone else sad that most of the treasures are still waiting to be found in the UK. I think I might have to take up the hobby if I lived there! Even if it takes a few years of searching, one decent find could fund your retirement.

Those are some high dollar detectors so I bet they had a tip. Maybe someone found a treasure map @janton. 💰

Howdy sir wonderwop! Yes that one she has looks like nothing I've seen before. Yeah maybe that's why they are not talking about how they actually found it, they don't want other hunters to know their secrets. They probably either did tons of research to get clues or like you said, they got a tip!

Lord Fluffdom!

You gotta love @nickyhavey.... While I'm glad for these folk, it's clear that they do this - if not for a living - regularly. Hats off to them for their tenacity. I also live in a "young" country, so artefacts like this are rare. That said, there are wrecks along our coast which, we are led to believe, are treasure troves.

lol! Howdy fionasfavourites! Yes, sir nickyhavey is a trip, I love that guy! Oh yes, that would be very true about the ship wrecks wouldn't it? But a much more complex and expensive operation to get to them. I agree about the treasure hunters, I think they've been doing that for a long time. Thanks so much for commenting!

Oh man that’s awesome!!! Crazy to think what all lies beneath us. Here we have romans, vikings, world wars. The coolest thing I found so far was a large bullet probably a 50 cal. We live next to a wwii nazi airport so come fall once the plants die off I will be looking for my million dollar treasure! What an amazing find!

Howdy sir badger! You are in such a great area to search! That would be something to make a major find!

@janton,

Hey mate. Great post.

And you know what ... something similar happened to me about a week ago. I was coming out of McDonlads and, while approaching my car, something sparkly caught my eye. I looked down. A quarter, a dime and three pennies!

Finding pennies on the ground is not that unusual ... but a dime AND a quarter! In the New World, this constitutes a serious find.

lol! howdy sir quillfire! Yes, that is a major find these days, especially with everything going digital. Thanks so much for commenting. I was reading one of your posts awhile back and thought dang, this guy could be making his living by writing! One of the truly gifted writers on Steemit.

Perhaps you WILL be making a living with Steemit if the prices soar.

Wonderful what a happy story, a true fairy tale come true. Im my home area on the south coast of Africa there are stories of sunken ships at the Cape of Storms. That treasure is under water and might be harder to find, if it exists. There are even rumours that Captain Kidd hid his treasure on the coast here during the days of pirates and the British privateers.

Howdy julianhorack! I bet there are lots of old shipwrecks along the coast, that has to be true! How interesting...but it would be much more expensive of an operation to go diving for those. I wonder if people have tried to find them before?

Howdy Janton! I knew this is going to be a good story, but I was too busy to read it! Or should I call you Lord Fluffton? LOL!!! I am happy to know you found some fascination in the old Europe too and I hope more is coming. How about the old story of Jack the Ripper, lol.

Anyway, I love these fascinating treasure hunting stories! And you are right, there must be still a lot uncovered! Maybe you should take a trip and start searching, lol.

Howd Miss Lena! I guess we are finally back up and running, yay! Well, about the treasure hunting, if I lived over there I would be doing it because they say only a fraction of the treasures have been found. It's a great story though, I'm glad you found it.
The next post is about another European story but not an old one!
