VREI: The first Virtual Reality Café in Europe closed its doors 🕶

Das VREI war das erste Virtual-Reality Café Europas, das im November 2015 in der Lindengasse in Wien seine Pforten öffnete und Virtual Reality, was damals voll im Trend lag, vielen Menschen näher bringen konnte.

Auch ich konnte so die neuen wunderbaren VR-Brillen von HTC und Oculus zum ersten Mal testen, was schon ein ziemlich beeindruckendes Erlebnis war, obwohl mir natürlich auch die Schwachstellen bewusst geworden sind. Allen voran, dass man eine große taucherartige Brille tragen muss und man viel Platz braucht ;) Und dann gibt es auch noch das Problem mit der Überhitzung und Motion-Sickness.

In der Anfangsphase war das VR-Erlebnis im VREI sogar kostenlos, was lange Warteschlangen nach sich zog, wurde dann aber sukzessive immer teurer und gegen Ende hat das Café nach eigenen Aussagen auch einen Besucherrückgang zu beklagen gehabt.

Im Sommer 2019 hat das VREI Café dann seinen Betrieb eingestellt, was ich Schade finde, aber irgendwie war es auch zu erwarten, und hat damit ein ähnliches Schicksal erlitten, wie die Computerspielhallen der 1980-er Jahre. Cool, dass es so lange überlebt hat und ich denke, VR hat trotz allem viel Potential und eine rosige Zukunft.

VREI was the first Virtual Reality Café in Europe to open its doors in November 2015 at Lindengasse in Vienna, bringing Virtual Reality, which has gone through a big hype at the time, closer to many people.

I was also able to test the new wonderful VR glasses from HTC and Oculus for the first time, which was quite an impressive experience, although I also became aware of the weaknesses. First of all, that you have to wear those glasses which remind me of big diving goggles and you need a lot of space ;) And then there's the problem of overheating and motion sickness as well.

In the beginning, the VR experience in VREI was even free of charge, which led to long queues, but then gradually became more and more expensive and towards the end, the café, according to its own statements, also had a decline in visitors to complain.

In the summer of 2019 the VREI Café finally closed its doors, which I think is a pity, but somehow it was to be expected and suffered a similar fate as the computer game halls of the 1980s. Cool that it lasted so long and I think VR still has a lot of potential and a rosy future.
