The blockchain-based social media said to rival Facebook is live and was launched on February 14th, 2020. I guess when users now celebrate Valentine's Day they will indirectly celebrate the anniversary of Voice as well. Pure market skill or just luck? You decide.

Launched in its Beta state, a lot of views have been going around with many believing the future of Voice becoming an alternative to Facebook is a realization and others just claiming it is all ruse and hype, saying at the end it will end-up to nothing but another shitty project. Personally, I think it is rather too soon to draw a conclusion, after all the Facebook, Google, Twitter, and others we all use today did not become a huge success overnight but rather a consistency from both ends, the dev team and users willing to stick with them both the hard and good times brought about the huge success we now see today.

Voice is built on the EOS blockchain, what makes voice stand out from pre-existing social media built on the blockchain as well, say the likes of Steemit, Cent, Whaleshares, Karma and many others? After all, they all have the same incentive which is bringing value back to the users rather than what the traditional social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) posses

Taking this into consideration I will say the single fact that KYC will be implemented changes all that.

That said, what is KYC?

KYC means “Know Your Customer”. It is a process by which banks obtain information about the identity and address of the customers. This process helps to ensure that banks’ services are not misused. The KYC procedure is to be completed by the banks while opening accounts and also periodically update the same.vikaspedia

How KYC relates to Blockchain or cryptocurrency?

Just as banking and finance, in other to best serve customers and ensure other users don’t provide fake identities, the term KYC was implemented in cryptocurrency exchanges and soon began to spread from exchanges to other platforms, this means a single user is linked to one account and when or if someone tries to gain access to that account without your confirmation, such exchanges simply block your account (temporary) and you are needed to upload your right documents to gain access to your funds once again. This has worked and saved a lot of users from not just phishing sites but also stolen devices and it seems Voice will be implementing this.

While many consider KYC to be good, others see it as a hindrance and not a welcome development, well this is my take on why I think KYC is good.

We earlier asked what differentiate Voice from other social media built on the blockchain, well KYC will play a big role to this, if you look into the Steemit, Whaleshares, and others, many accounts are own by the same user and what they do is simply spam the same content over and over while buying a huge stake which is then used to vote this account, thereby limiting the reward pool allocation for that day. If KYC is implemented, such activity will stop, as users won’t be able to create more than one account at a go, thereby creating a better allocation of daily funds and ensuring that fund is spread across its users. Now you might ask, what if a user invites friends, colleagues, and other close entities to create an account and allocate funds to them as they would with an alternate account, well this is what the next paragraph is all about.

From close observation on videos currently online about how Voice works, it seems they actually stick with their initial plan of distributing rewards. Meaning you would have to become active to gain any form of incentive in Voice, which involves making reasonable contribution and voting is done when another user voice your post up, unlike Steemit and others where I can simply locate your profile and vote your post randomly, this is not the case in Voice, if your content is shitty as many might call it, you might end up making nothing or just little from little activities you perform daily. This combined with KYC is definitely a few points I think Voice will be totally different from any blockchain-based social media we have used before now.

That said, my only concern is the pattern Voice beta was launched, with a limitation to certain parts of the world, the only users able to use Voice at the moment must reside in the United States, the idea behind this is still unclear, but I believe the Devs won’t spend awful amount of time without making the right decisions. We just have to trust them and hope whatever their reasons are is good enough to bring about the mass adoption we are all looking for.
