Sailing St. Margaret's Bay - Part 2

Here's Part 1 if you missed it.

Day 3

Those pink skies the night before sure were our delight in the morning. Waking up, there wasn't a cloud in the sky and it was absolutely calm and sunny with a little breeze just to keep things cool.

I was sitting in the back cockpit, drinking my first few sips of coffee, when I noticed a few dolphins swimming by the boat. By the time I grabbed my phone to take a picture, there were all kinds of them just swimming right beside the boat.

If I had to guess, I'd say there were close to 75 dolphins swimming together. It seems to me that they were having a feast on all those fish @davidkingns was catching the night before.

We puttered around the boat for a while, eating and doing odd jobs that needed to be done before my son, @landonator, arrived for a few nights visit. I got the dinghy motor running for the first time since we left. This was a huge relief because we made 4 or 5 trips from our mooring ball in the marina getting groceries, fuel, and other supplies back out to the boat. That would have been a pain in the ass to row with a full dinghy.

@landonator helped steer the dinghy out to the boat for a little while and he really enjoyed that. We got everything squared away and went out to the beach for a pre-supper swim. According to the girl in the marina, there were beaches all over the place. Because we were short on time from all the running around getting supplies, we eventually packed up at the beach and went back to the mooring at the marina to cook supper. I sadly didn't get any pictures of this beach excursion.

In the evening, Landon and I tried to catch some fish, but it seems like those dolphins cleaned everything out pretty good in the morning. Considering @davidkingns caught three of them the night before and we saw some other people catching fish, the dolphins were most likely the culprit.

@landonator had a great time with his Grandfather that evening playing different games he'd would come up with. Jumping off the ladder onto his Grandfather on the bunk was a particularly funny one.

And then, another nice sunset with moon to finish off the day.

Day 4

The fourth day brought out my brother to stay with us for two days. The boat gets a little crowded when you add a 3rd grown person, plus a half sized kid, but it was a good time.

We headed out for a sail before too long and everything was going well. The winds were quite strong that day and we ended up reefing the main quite early. Due to a weird angle of the wind, our lack of knowledge of the area, and no clear agenda where to go, we eventually decided just to head back to the beach we had visited the day before and have a swim there.

This little beach was in such a nice spot. It was completely sheltered from the wind, the water wasn't unbearably cold as the ocean often is, and there were a number of mooring balls available so we didn't have to mess around with anchoring every time we stopped there.

We ended up barbecuing there for supper while we were swimming and messing around on the beach. After supper, we headed out for another quick sail when the wind calmed down a bit and gently came back to our mooring ball at the marina just as it was getting dark.

Another great day.

Day 5

We set out fairly early on the fifth day. Our goal was to make it all the way across the bay to Queensland Beach. The winds were actually quite a bit stronger than the day before and we also ended up packing it in after too long and we decided just to motor across. We could have kept sailing, but being heeled over consistently at 35-45 degrees for a few hours isn't the best thing when you have a 4-year-old on board. He'll be up to that sort adventure some day, but not quite yet. It was safer to use the motor, so that's what we did.

Anyway, once we got there it was kind of disappointing. The beach was supposed to be nice but it really wasn't that special. The strong wind was coming right in on the beach and it didn't look that pleasant at all. We realized then that our best bet would have been to stay around where we came from. We could have sailed around for a little bit and then hit our go-to beach, which was sheltered, and made the best of the day.

We did head back there and cooked supper at the beach again, but we wasted most of our day trying to get to the other beach, which was unfortunate.

Once we got back to the sheltered beach, my son, my brother, and I set out to make some sand castles on the beach while my dad cooked up some supper. I ended up with a nice video of that afternoon.

What we ended up with was quite interesting.

Not only did we make some random castles, faces, and volcanoes but we also found some water seeping through the sand and redirected it to make a small river and a lake to accompany the castles and volcanoes. It was quite impressive how much water we were able to divert to fill everything up as you can see in the video.

Day 6

The weather wasn't the greatest this day. It was overcast, threatening to rain, and the temperature was considerably cooler. My brother was planning on leaving around 2pm and my son was being picked up around 6pm so we weren't planning anything big that day anyway, but the weather kind of kept us inside the boat for the morning.

The wind was still quite strong and, looking at the forecast for the next few days, my dad and I decided we were going to head out the next day to avoid some really heavy winds that were supposed to hit a few days later. If we could get out of the bay and around the point early enough, we could avoid the really heavy winds and be sheltered once we came back in to Halifax Harbour. After looking over the weather for a little longer, we actually decided to pack up the boat the next day, go get the trailer from Halifax, and just tow it back instead of spending two days fighting 50km/h winds. At only 26 feet, the boat wasn't really made for that sort of thing and even though we could do it, it wouldn't have been that enjoyable.

Since we weren't planning on doing any sailing that day and were just going to start packing up, we thought of doing something else on shore. We decided to take a trip in to a Provincial Park that was close by for a little hike. It killed the afternoon and Landon really enjoyed it.

We even found a random geocache inside a large birch tree with a little stretchy toy for Landon. It was like finding a chest full of buried gold for him and we were the first people to find it and sign the log book inside. He was playing with that toy the rest of the day.

When we got back to the marina, my brother took off back to his place in Truro and Landon and I headed back to the boat. When we got back out, it was still much cooler on the water. Since we were just going to go get the trailer the next morning anyway, we decided just to head in that evening, sleep in some better beds, and head back out with the trailer in the morning.

I mean, why wouldn't we do that?

Although the weather didn't cooperate as much as I'd have liked and we cut it a few days short, it was a pretty good week sailing and swimming around a different part of Nova Scotia. I've never been over that way before and it was an interesting experience. I know my son had a great few days on the boat and it's always good to get three generations of the family together for something we all enjoy.
