One Man's Trash

avatar

Over the weekend I helped out a buddy clean out his garage. Originally we were gonna haul everything out to the dump, but then I realized there were several useful items in amongst all the stuff he wanted to have taken to the landfill.

Most of it was cardboard and some old wood scraps that can be burned. The rest was some pretty great stuff to include some golf bags/clubs, new roof shingles, paint, stains, tools, and some interior doors.

Saved a trip to the landfill and gained some useful resources for the homestead. All the while helping my buddy have a nice clean garage. Wins all around!

Shout out to @steemmatt who is the master at upcycling. He has shown me there is so much waste in our modern society, and how true the old adage of one man's trash can be another man's treasure.

Here's a sneak peek of the idea I have for my first permanant structure on the property. It will be a 10'x10' simple structure. It will be a place where I can put a bed and small fireplace to stay on the property through the wintertime. It will be the main bathhouse on the land that folks can use for visits when camping down on the land when I get workshops going in the future.

Tomorrow I'll be picking up some logs that my buddy Robbie offered me who just got his hands on a sawmill.

Thanks for checking out my post!

Yours in liberty toward a brighter future,
Greg Doud @makinstuff

Well done! Have you looked into cob house construction using others trash?

Cob is pretty cool. I helped on a Cob house in the Eugene area a few years ago just to learn how to do it. Ack! More than ten years now LOL.

Awesome I didn’t know anything about it, but a Facebook friend of mine has documented his build over the last year and it’s damn impressive. All his materials are found, except for some trusses and a few of the major structural components. Really cool though, think he has spent maybe a thousand or two out of pocket and is well on his way to a 1500 square foot abode.

It's actually kind of fun to mix the cob, if you do it the traditional way, by treading. Depends on the partner really. Can be a sort of nude mud wrestling =p

I haven't really looked into a cob structure very much, but I probably have most materials to make a cob structure happen on the property. Gonna look into it more seriously.

Are you going to use timber framing techniques, or conventional?

I would like to use some timber framing with this structure. My buddy Robbie may be able to help me somewhat with building it. I don't have any experience building that way, but know I can figure it out.

Good stuff. I expect at least 2-3 birdhouses and manmade arrows from that haul. Keep us updated on anything clever you can assemble.

If you plan that structure right, you'll be able to add onto the side with the high part of the roof to make a peaked roof with another section the same size as the one you're going to build.
Just a thought, if you build it 12 X 12, there's less waste from things like plywood sheets. Everything seems to be made in 4 X 8 sheets, so it would be a sheet and a half for each wall, if sideways, or 3 sheets if you put them vertically.

There's lots of room under there. is that an open air garage? ive loved that concept since moving into my apt over a garage. eventually you can frame it in and side it for an enclosed cold storage, work space, or multi purpose area. also, thought, easier to have bath house on ground level? also you might consider taking advantage or any geothermal/solar properties with a mini greenhouse.

Wasn't really planning on it being an open air garage, but I do like that idea @torico. I am looking into burying a pipe into the side of the hill. It would get fed up into the house to get an air draw for a thermal difference. This would draw the air through the vent pipe in the earth. The area where I plan to put the cabin is surrounded by trees, and wouldn't really get much sun for a greenhouse. I will put up my Caterpillar style greenhouse for the aquaponics system.

I tend to secure lumber, paint, and other materials leftover from jobs and pass them on to folks of limited means on other jobs. I don't much like waste, and like to help folks. Every 2"x4" that gets diverted from a landfill into a project helps to get more out of every tree, add wealth to folks that benefit from it, and prevent centralization of money that eventually increases the power of enemies of freedom.

Good on 'ya mate.

Thanks!

Thank ya brother, you bet there is so much waste, and lots of opportunities to reuse things. Especially when trying to stretch funds.
