Ramblings Of A Procrastinator || What To Do About It πŸ’ͺ

Doing something about this cycle.

Does anyone have the same problem I have? When it comes to helping out others I am readily available and I am highly motivated, but when it comes to my own projects, which will be beneficial to me in the long run, I tend to take my time and put it off.

There are a lot of things I need to do for myself and most of the time I tend to procrastinate. One of the reasons why is, because it's new to me and another time it may be because it's something I care a lot for and I don't want to screw it up; my perfectionism. That's when anxiety kicks in. Thanks to researching why people tend to put things off, I have been able to recognize why I sometimes procrastinate and it made me actively work on it and work through it.

And then there are those things that aren't really that new, but I still put it off, although I know I am experienced and able enough to accomplish it. But the funny thing is that knowing something and believing and accepting it are completely different things. Sometimes you know something, but haven't accepted it yet or don't want to believe it yet.

Ok, enough rambling πŸ˜…
Yesterday I took an online test to find out what has been keeping me from starting with something that I might actually enjoy doing. It gave me some insight into my blockage (pun intended πŸ˜…) and also gave me some useful tips to work on.

Some of the advice includes:

  • Set achievable goals for yourself, work to achieve them, and enjoy that achievement. So in short, start with small steps and all those small steps will eventually lead to bigger things.
  • Reward yourself however small the task may have been.
  • Become aware of your thoughts. Write down these down throughout the day.
  • Challenge your negative thoughts, and replace them with positive ones.
  • Create a strong and vivid picture of what it will be like to achieve your goals.

That's it in short and I will try to implement those steps and maybe I will tell you how it helped. I will not say "if" it helped. Now there's some positive thinking πŸ’ͺ
If you're also dealing with procrastination and are interested in doing something about it, you may want to try the test out yourself at https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newLDR_57.htm
Let me know how it fared for you πŸ˜‰

I remember too many nights when I was in college being up doing a paper that was due the next morning. We aren't talking 1 or 2 page papers either. These were final papers or take home essay exams in my history classes. So we are talking at least 10 or more pages. What a nightmare! I waited because I didn't enjoy doing those papers. They were a chore for me. Perfectionism played a role but I am not sure how large. I am a huge fan of good enough is good enough. I get more done and the more I do the better it will be. Not perfect but better and it will be done which is the point.

For me it's sometimes also my perfectionism standing in my way, but am working on it. I have found Hive to be a good place to practice and curb that innate feeling and just do.

But so relatable what you said and the papers; past few months I also had some papers due and worked till the last hours before the deadline πŸ™ˆ

Thank you for stopping by and have a blessed new week!

Thanks a lot for sharing these great advice about procrastination and how to overcome it @tanjakolader, I do that sometimes myself too, especially if I need to do something big and the time seems insufficient, and I prove myself right, or wrong if I had started directly, keep up your great work, it's awesome.

Thank you for the encouraging words 😊

And, indeed the past few months I had some papers and a test where I did start a bit earlier than I'm used to and it felt much better than when I rushed getting things done.

Have a blessed new week!

Omg I can relate to this post on so many levels. I can be super motivated but I can also perfect the art of procrastination at times. I am much better than I used to be since I set up a structure for myself, but wow, I used to forget things since I didn't write things down as often as I should. Or I would be exhausted by the time I need to tackle more important tasks because I put them off until later in the day....etc etc..

I appreciate the tips and tricks to help us get back into alignment with things. I especially need this in order to keep my creative flow going. When I feel stuck or stagnant, that's when the procrastination seems to settle in for me. lol. I bookmarked this so I can refer to it when I need it!

Thanks so much & hang in there! You will get back on track :) Sending hugs & #pixiedust. Keep being Awesome! πŸ‘πŸ™‚πŸ’š

Aww thanks for that compliment (blush blush hihi).
Indeed, even I need structure and like @gvkanten said, is that we should keep promises to ourselves just like we would with a client.

Good luck and let's keep motivating each other! πŸ’ͺ

When it comes to helping out others I am readily available and I am highly motivated, but when it comes to my own projects, which will be beneficial to me in the long run, I tend to take my time and put it off.

This hit so hard because I am just like what is written here. (I guess we're kind of the same) What hinders me from doing my own tasks are favors from the family and relatives that I cannot say a "no" to, also because I don't want them to perceive that I am being disrespectful towards them.

You know not everyone in the family also thinks about you and the things that you want to do and achieve for yourself. And that cycle... I would say "abuse" ... of receiving favors which I cannot turn down has resulted into them perceiving me as someone who doesn't have anything important to do. You can say this is my hate to every one of them who treats me like that. But you know I still choose to endure it all and focus all the time I can to encourage myself to do better. So that in time, I can be not that person they used to treat me as that.

Hmmm also sounds familiar to me.
The important thing here is to set boundaries. I also have a hard time saying "no" to family, especially to my parents. Don't know if it's the Asian and Christian upbringing of mine. But there came a point in my life, when I just had to set my boundaries and they had to respect that.

Hope that you will also find the balance in this πŸ˜‰

Thank you for the kind words @pixiepost. It has been a week since I visited the community, and I'm surprised by users who gave me engage tokens. And although I don't know what are they, I'm still thankful. Thank you!

You're so welcome!! :) It was well deserved.

Here is a link to explain what the ENGAGE tokens are, etc...hope it helps :) https://peakd.com/hive-174578/@misterengagement/engage-update (Btw, you can replace the Steem word with HIVE. lol)

I'm usually on HIVE every day but it's been a crazy few weeks so it's been intermittent for me lately. Hopefully in January, I will be back on full force lol.

Have an amazing Sunday! πŸ’š

I can relate to @lisamgentile1961 here. For me it was that my creativity was always lost in the woods and trying to find its way back. I know it's funny but this so true πŸ˜† which is one of the reasons why I could never start working on a paper long before the day it was due

Haha indeed this also sounds familiar to me.
Mostly I have a blockage, but when that due date starts approaching it seems as if the creativity begins to flow.

In this video

Tim Urban explained how the brain of procrastinators functions pretty well.

You know with procrastination I've accepted that it's always going to try to creep in... I've read about, seen a lot of logical explanations but I think the solution lies in two things that might actually be contradictory: 1) Accept that it's always going to creep in at some point and plan for it... 2) it really comes down to 'Hou je aan de afspraken met jezelf!' (follow through on the deals you make with yourself). Deals with ourselves are the easiest to break and if you make it habit it's going to become easier each time, but if you would respect yourself like you would respect a big client for example, and you create a habit of doing that, procrastination has less of a chance.

Thank you for that advice. I never thought of it that way, to see myself as that big client or partner, for whom you would do everything.
I will also try that ONE out.

By the way, are you a native Dutch speaker? I'm also one, because I come from a country that used to be a colony of the Netherlands.

Hello @tanjakolader
Sometimes I think that behind these actions of postponing activities that benefit us there is some fear of change, of making mistakes, and it is normal, the future is uncertain, but being optimistic and knowing what we want things should go well.

Hi @josevas217, thank you for those wise words.
Indeed, a lot is uncertain but life keeps on going. Only way to succeed is to also keep on moving besides it.
