Key point of the Silk Road, Dunhuang

If Xi'an is the starting point for the Silk Road, Dunhuang is the last stop on the Chinese compound, corresponding to the Chinese entrance to the Silk Road. If you pass through Yang guan and Jade Gate in Dunhuang, you will be divided into Cheonsan Bukro and Cheonsan Namro, and you will be able to reach Europe via inland Asia.

It was Dunhuang that was chosen by Yoo Hong-joon as the "first destination for Chinese exploration" in his book, "The Chinese side of My Cultural Heritage Survey." The city that I first met through Yun's novel, The Love of the Don Huang. The novel by Yoon Hu-myung, who first acted as a poet, is not an easy-to-read style, so it is not easy to even grasp the plot, but it imprints the mysterious name "Dunhuang" in the corner of my mind.

Dunhuang is a city that shows the true nature of its historical site exploration as it has a large-scale blocking cave. The cave was built for about 1,000 years from the mid-4th century to the 13th century. It is said that the number of stone caves built during the period after the reign of the Tang Dynasty was over a thousand and called Cheonbul-dong. It covers 1,680 meters above the cliff of Mingshan Mountain, 25 kilometers southeast of Dunhuang City, and houses some 2,400 small statues (shape made of clay) and 50,000 square meters of murals in 492 existing stone caves.

In particular, about 50,000 volumes of ancient documents were discovered in the 17th tunnel of the tunnel called Janggyeongdong, which surprised the world, which led to the birth of a new academic called Dunhuangology. This is where the manuscript of the Indian travel journal "Wangocheonchukgukjeon" was found, as we know it well. However, the 'Wangocheonchukgukjeon' discovered in Donhuang is currently housed in the National Library of Paris. Why is it in France, not in China, not in Korea?

In addition to the discovery of the ancient documents, several books show the process of British explorer Stein seven years after the discovery of Dunhuang relics in 1900, which is recorded as a great event in Chinese academic history, followed by the theft of Dunhuang relics by Russians and Americans, including French explorer Pelliot the following year and Japanese Otani. Some of the Dunhuang relics that Otani looted are also stored in the National Museum of Korea, so Korean cannot be free.

  • This serial posting is my Silk Road travel plan. I am Korean and the original was written in Korean. Because I am not familiar with English, this article is translated into a translator. I'd like to introduce you to my writing and get travel information and advice. I hope you will pay a lot of attention.
