Some friends from the city of Maracay, Aragua state, in the center of Venezuela, invited me one Saturday to do a mountain route that is a classic in this area of the country: the Cerro Hotel Maracay trail, which takes you to various places in the National Park Henri Pittier.

We left early to the Hotel Maracay (currently Marriot) located in Las Delicias, where the entrance to this National Park is and before 8:00 in the morning we began the ascent through the popularly known as Cerro del Hotel Maracay.

Our idea was to get to what they call "The Container", which is at a distance of 4,618 km and is quite steep. Most of the people who go to this mountain have this place as their goal and then turn back.

As we were not going to train, we did the tour at a moderate pace and stopped at various points to see the beautiful views of the city of Maracay.

It was hot that day but there were clouds, so from time to time they covered the sun and it didn't burn us as much on the way.

We were happy to get to “The Container”, where there were many people, we rested for a while, we hydrated and we wanted to continue walking. As we got away from there, there were not so many people on the trail, we only saw a couple of runners training.

From there the landscape changes and the climate is cooler, we even heard the howls of the monkeys although we didn't see them. What we did see was a breathtaking view of the mountain.

Decidimos seguir.

We continue walking, here you don't get lost because the path is marked. A while later we reached the point known as “Las Tablitas”, there is a sign there that indicates the distance walked, we had covered 7,735 km. There it said that at 4,272 km we were in Las Cocuizas, which is a river recreational area. We decided to continue.

A little later a runner caught up with us and we took the opportunity to ask him what that route was like, since none of us knew it. He told us that it wasn't difficult, it only got a little complicated before reaching Las Cocuizas because the descent was a bit steep. He encouraged us to continue and we did.

A few more minutes of walking and we arrive at Las Cocuizas, where Las Delicias river runs, ideal for cooling off in its cold waters. This recreational area that is in the El Castaño urbanization of Maracay, also belongs to the Henri Pittier National Park, so it is well preserved. There were many families spending the day and cooking with firewood. There are also food and drink stalls for visitors.
