guten Morgen my #beer loving friends! I have been waiting all week to drink this beer. and the day has finally come!
As you can see, there is two: and ale and a stout. That's because the shop across the street from where I live is having a special. The name of these beers is Ixbalanqué (pronounced Ish-ball-ahn-KAY) and comes from the amazing mayan mythology book the Popol Vuh which tells the story of creation of the sun, the moon and time.

Hunahpú and Ixbalanqué - the birth of the sun and the moon

Mayan ball is a game which was a bit of across between modern day volleyball and basketball. The game consisted of putting a rubber ball (back then, this material was known as "blood of trees") through a hoop by using elbows, knees and hips.

The two brothers, Hunahpú and Ixbalanqué, went to the court built by their late father and began to play. The lords of the underworld were probably sleeping or very hungover, because they were royally pissed off by the noise made by the twins playing ball. So much so, that they brought the twins to the underworld and challenged them to a match. the stakes were high, as the losers will be sacrificed; just like their father and uncle before them.

The game would take place in seven days.

Game day arrives, and the twins must go down into Xibalbá, the underworld, and meet the lords there. Only the lords of the underworld don't like competition, so they have a few tricks up their sleeve: a series of challenges they must pass, sort of like a really difficult American Ninja Warrior.

If you've ever seen Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade when the hero enters the temple, it should give you a good idea of what Hunahpú and Ixbalanqué were faced with:

After passing rivers of water, lava, moving boulders, crossroads, darkness, obsidian arrows... the twins arrive at the most difficult challenge before the great match: the house of bats. a place they should have never been able to reach and a place where they will surely meet their death.

They are able to outwit the lords of the underworld and trick the tricksters into letting them be sacrificed and brought back to life. The Lords agree and are slaughtered and of course the two heroes don't bring them back to life. Instead, they walk away from the the underworld in slow motion, like the heroes do in Hollywood movies. They gave each other a high five and jumped into the sky to become the sun and the moon.

My friends... from the deepest, darkest blackness of the underworld I give you...

IXBALANQUE!

If you're intrigued by this very short version of the story of Hunahpú and Ixbalanqué, you might want to read it in a little more detail here If at all possible, you should read the Popol Vuh, as it contains many fascinating stories of creation such as this one.

have an amazing #beersaturday! Prost!
