Un Río y un lugar donde se escribió parte de nuestra historia; Fortín Mercedes - Here have been written the important pages of our history; Fortín Mercedes

El Río Colorado que nace en nuestra hermosa Cordillera de los Andes, no es un río más. Geográficamente reviste una gran importancia porque es el que marca el límite de la Patagonia del resto del país, sino por que sobre sus riberas se escribieron quizá las páginas más importantes de la historia de nuestro país promediando el año 1800.

The Colorado River, which originates in our beautiful Andes Mountains, is not just another river. Geographically it is very important because it marks the limit of Patagonia from the rest of the country, but because on its banks were written perhaps the most important pages of the history of our country in the middle of 1800.

A 120 kilómetros de Bahía Blanca, ciudad en la que vivo, está ubicado Fortín Mercedes. Fue fundado por Juan Manuel de Rosas durante la Campaña al Desierto, allá por el año 1830.

120 kilometers from Bahia Blanca, the city where I live, is located Fortín Mercedes. It was founded by Juan Manuel de Rosas during the Campaign to the Desert, back in 1830.

La Campaña al Desierto al liderada por Manuel de Rosas tuvo como principal objetivo someter a los pueblos indígenas originarios que ocupaban estas tierras a la obediencia criolla ganando tierras para poder dominarlas y explotarlas económicamente, lo cual constituyo el principio del fin nuestros pueblos nativos.

The Campaign to the Desert, led by Manuel de Rosas, had as its main objective to subject the native indigenous peoples who occupied these lands to Creole obedience by gaining land in order to dominate and exploit it economically, which was the beginning of the end for our native peoples.

Es este lugar tuvo inicio el proceso de colonización de nuestros pueblos originarios, donde surge la figura de Ceferino Namuncurá, (beatificado en el año 2007) primer aborigen en evangelizar y llevar el cristianismo a los pueblos autóctonos.

It is in this place that the process of colonization of our native peoples began, where the figure of Ceferino Namuncurá, (beatified in 2007) the first aborigine to evangelize and bring Christianity to the native peoples, emerged.

Después de esta pequeña reseña histórica voy a mostrarles un poco de este pequeño pero hermoso lugar, donde la naturaleza abunda y la magia persiste. En el ingreso a Fortín Mercedes encontramos una hermosa iglesia con una escultura a Ceferino Namuncurá, cuyos restos descansaron allí durante muchos años y luego fueron trasladados a paraje San Ignacio en la provincia de Neuquén.

After this small historical review I am going to show you a little bit of this small but beautiful place, where nature abounds and magic persists. At the entrance to Fortín Mercedes we find a beautiful church with a sculpture to Ceferino Namuncurá, whose remains rested there for many years and then were moved to San Ignacio spot in Neuquén province.

Si avanzamos hacia el río, detrás de la iglesia hay un muy lindo y completo museo donde se exhiben no solo gran cantidad especies animales que habitan la zona, sino también gran material relativo a la historia del lugar y de los pueblos indígenas que habitaban esas tierras hasta antes de la colonización. Claro está que en el museo la figura de Ceferino Namuncurá es de gran relevancia.

If we move towards the river, behind the church there is a very nice and complete museum where you can see not only a great number of animal species that inhabit the area, but also great material related to the history of the place and the indigenous people who inhabited these lands until before colonization. Of course, in the museum the figure of Ceferino Namuncurá is of great relevance.

Detrás del museo casi pegado al Río Colorado encontramos el Fortín Mercedes, lugar en donde se libraron cientos de batallas y que tanta historia tiene. Si bien en la actualidad se lo ve pequeño, para aquellos años representaba un punto estratégico para controlar a los aborígenes que intentaban cruzar el río.

Behind the museum, almost next to the Colorado River, we find the Mercedes Fort, a place where hundreds of battles were fought and which has so much history. Although it looks small today, in those years it represented a strategic point to control the aborigines who tried to cross the river.

A pocos metros del Fuerte encontramos el Río Colorado que lejos está de aquellos años de esplendor, donde su gran caudal lo convertía en un río con fuertes correntadas y peligroso para quienes decidían bañarse. Lamentablemente la explotaciones agricola-ganaderas y muchos dueños de campos han ido desviando agua para sus campos y también se han construido pequeñas represas por lo que en muchos sectores se lo puede cruzar caminando, algo impensado hace 20 años atrás

A few meters from the Fort we find the Colorado River, which is far from those years of splendor, where its great flow made it a river with strong currents and dangerous for those who decided to bathe. Unfortunately, the agricultural and livestock farms and many farm owners have been diverting water for their fields and have also built small dams so that in many sectors you can cross it on foot, something that was unthinkable 20 years ago.

Más allá de eso, es un hermoso lugar para visitar, aprender y sobre todo para disfrutar de un entorno en el cual la naturaleza abunda y donde encontraremos mucha tranquilidad, especialmente para ir con nuestros hijos.

Beyond that, it is a beautiful place to visit, to learn and above all to enjoy an environment in which nature abounds and where we will find much tranquility, especially to go with our children.
