In this play, the author José Saramago, achieved worldwide recognition and success. Achieving a scathing narrative and reaching his top as an artist puts us in the shoes of a strange situation: an epidemic of white blindness. Imagine what would the world be like if we all started to lose the most important sense for our survival? What would the consequences?

The novel focuses on the situation of 6 characters, which we are getting to know piece by piece. However, the main focus is on the wife of the first infected with this epidemic, a doctor. A doctor, unable to recognize the cause of his own blindness and living a dire irony.

José Saramago with his unique and unrepeatable voice shows us a difficult world in the face of such a situation, a chaotic world absorbed by a maelstrom, a Maelstrom of misery, hunger, and selfishness. Disregarding many spelling rules, (the use of question marks and hyphens) the author makes it clear to us that he is a character with acid and deeply realistic vision of life, not hinting at any sign of false hope or rescuing any character in a forced way.

En esta obra el autor, José Saramago alcanzó el reconocimiento y éxito mundial. Logrando una narrativa mordaz y alcanzando su punto álgido como artista nos mete en la piel de una situación extraña: Una epidemia de ceguera blanca. Imaginen ¿Cómo sería el mundo si todos empezáramos a perder el sentido más importante para nuestra supervivencia? ¿Cuáles serían las consecuencias?

La novela se centra en la situación de 6 personajes, los cuales vamos conociendo pedazo a pedazo. Sin embargo el foco principal se centra en la esposa del primer infectado con esta epidemia, un médico. Un médico incapaz de reconocer la causa de su propia ceguera y por consiguiente viviendo una nefasta ironía.

José Saramago con su voz única e irrepetible nos muestra un mundo difícil ante semejante situación, un mundo caótico absorbido por una vorágine, un Maelstrom de miseria, hambre y egoísmo. Irrespetando muchas reglas de ortografía, (el uso de signos interrogativos y guiones) nos deja claro el autor que es un personaje con una visión acida y profundamente realista ante la vida, no dejando entrever ninguna señal de falsa esperanza ni rescatando ningún personaje de manera forzada.

It is a crude novel that made him earn a Nobel Prize. An analogy to meanness, a desperate situation where human behavior is erratic and panic begins to seize even the noblest of hearts.

Saramago expands the plot and where the roots of a partial blindness began, an epidemic spread begins. Therefore explaining the shortage of food, hunger, agony and even perversion of society is fair and necessary, it is a difficult part to accept but already demonstrated with historical facts, leaving us this novel with a bitter taste compared to what fiction can say about us as a species.

We are quite a peculiar species, we can behave in different ways and we try to adapt and survive any disaster. But our psyche is complex and often fragile, especially when it comes to survival, our brain becomes primitive, crude and the elegance of our mind is gradually dissipating, the only goal is to survive at all costs and when the selfishness is irrational there are not many opportunities to continue a species. Individuals become isolated, dissociation becomes a big problem and the dispersion of any value that we have as a species becomes effective.

Es una novela cruda que lo hizo merecedor de un premio nobel. Una analogía a la mezquindad, una situación desesperada en donde el comportamiento humano es errático y el pánico se empieza a apoderar de hasta los corazones más nobles.

Saramago expande la trama y en donde las raíces de una ceguera parcial empezaron, se inicia una extensión a nivel epidémico. Por consiguiente explicar la escasez de alimentos, hambre, agonía y hasta perversión de la sociedad es justo y necesario, es una parte difícil de aceptar pero ya demostrada con hechos históricos, dejándonos esta novela con un sabor amargo ante lo que la ficción puede decir de nosotros como especie.

Somos una especie bastante peculiar, podemos comportarnos de diversos modos y tratamos de adaptarnos y sobrevivir ante cualquier desastre. Pero nuestra psique es compleja y muchas veces frágil, sobre todo cuando se trata de supervivencia, nuestro cerebro se vuelve primitivo, tosco y la elegancia de nuestra mente se va disipando poco a poco, la única meta es el sobrevivir a toda costa y cuando el egoísmo es irracional no hay muchas oportunidades de continuar una especie. Los individuos se van aislando, la disociación se convierte en un gran problema y la dispersión de cualquier valor que tengamos como especie se hace vigente.

The military takes control of a hospital and recruits those infected there. The hospital is divided into two parts and people live in crowded conditions. Every so often a portion of food is brought to all the residents of that place but the unnecessary selfishness of a few makes ruthless people take control of the food and medicines. It doesn't take long for unpleasant situations to happen that will tear our souls as we read.

It's this tear that the author seeks. It's this emotional shock necessary to understand the message of the play. While he can be too ruthless, there is neither more nor less to tell. It's what can happen and it is precisely the blindness that we have that allows us to see beyond our own hunger that prevents us from an act of cooperation, an act of nobility.

En un abrir y cerrar de ojos dejamos de existir y lo que fue la cúspide de la inteligencia se extingue.

Esta es una novela para abrir los ojos, nos da una bofetada mostrándonos situaciones realmente difíciles y permítanme darles un pequeño abreboca para captar un poco más su atención para que lean la obra.

Los militares toman el control de un hospital y reclutan a los infectados en ese sitio. El hospital se divide en dos partes y las personas viven hacinadas en ese lugar. Cada cierto tiempo una porción de comida les es llevada a todos los residentes de ese lugar pero el egoísmo innecesario de unos pocos hace que tomen el control de la comida y medicinas unas personas despiadadas. No tardan en suceder situaciones desagradables que a medida que leamos nos desgarraran el alma.

Es este desgarro lo que el autor busca. Es este shock emocional necesario para entender el mensaje de la obra. Si bien puede llegar a ser demasiado despiadado, no hay ni más ni menos que contar. Es lo que puede llegar a suceder y es precisamente la ceguera que tenemos que nos deja ver más de allá de nuestras propia hambre lo que nos impide un acto de cooperación, una acto de nobleza.

It should be noted that I don't have a clearly pessimistic view of humanity. I really like Nietzsche's idea about the Beyond-man, evolving not only from a biological point of view but also from a social point of view. I believe in the greatness of the human being, in everything that he has built, but I also know everything that he is capable of destroying. This ambivalence makes us interesting, strong, and weak at the same time.

We must overcome fear of adversity because they teach us, they forge our character and it is precisely what the author teaches us with the protagonist, the doctor's wife. An apparently fragile character who becomes a heroine, a being with an enviable character able of solving complex situations.

In short, this is one of my favorite books and I hope you enjoy reading it. This is one of the greatest recommendations I can give in the world of literature.

Cabe acotar que no tengo una visión netamente pesimista para con la humanidad. Me gusta mucho la idea de Nietzsche acerca del superhombre, de evolucionar no solo desde un punto biológico sino social. Creo en la grandeza del humano, en todo lo que ha construido, pero también conozco todo lo que es capaz de destruir. Esta ambivalencia nos hace interesantes, fuertes y débiles al mismo tiempo.

Debemos superar el miedo ante las adversidades porque estas nos enseñan, nos forjan el carácter y es precisamente lo que nos enseña el autor con la protagonista, la esposa del médico. Un personaje aparentemente frágil que se vuelve una heroína, un ser con un carácter envidiable capaz de resolver situaciones complejas.

En resumen, este es uno de mis libros favoritos y espero que sea de su agrado al leerlo. Esta es una de las más grandes recomendaciones que puedo dar en el mundo de la literatura.
