A few months ago I almost fell prey to a scam in cryptocurrencies, in the end I was able to avoid it. At that moment I thanked God for having knowledge about the matter.

Due to this experience I decided to make a two-part presentation on how to avoid scams in this field, because when we talk about cryptocurrencies the first thing we must be aware of is that we are talking about money and we must do everything in our power to avoid them.

In this first part, I consider that the first thing to do is to choose a good wallet to keep our cryptocurrencies, because there we already start to shield, more or less, our savings, because it is from the wallets where we manage our funds. From it, we send or receive the cryptocurrencies, we consult our balance and we review the history of transactions.

  • Wallets on line.

It is necessary to indicate that all the Wallets have two types of addresses or keys to be able to manipulate them. The most important is the private key which is like the password by which we have control of our cryptoactives, the second, public key is the address where our funds are stored, it is like the number of our bank account. It is this last one that we give when we are going to receive funds; the private one, on the other hand, is used to send them.

Having clarified this, let's consider the choice of the wallet, since there are different types, which are distinguished among other things by the control they allow us of our money. In general, we can group them in the following way:

  • Exchange offices (Exchange) they provide us with the addresses or public keys where they can send us crypto-currencies, but we do not have control of them. That is, we do not have our private key. Therefore, we are always at risk of having our accounts frozen or, in the worst case, the exchange servers being hacked and lost.

There are already many examples of this, the most recent being the case of the exchange Okex, which suspended withdrawals from its platform.

  • Wallets on line. These are websites where we do not need to install any software to dispose of our funds. And they also have the advantage that we have our private keys, which gives us total control, but there are two risks: one, the temporary unavailability of them if the servers are down; two, the possibility of hacking the page.

Therefore, it is important that if you are going to choose this type of wallet, you should choose sites with a good reputation that guarantee security. However, as a general rule, you should always bear in mind that the further away our wallets are from online sites, the safer they are.

  • Software Wallet: These are applications for which we do not need to store our backgrounds in online sites, since there are versions for both desktop and mobile computers.

The responsibility is totally in our hands, since, in addition to having our private key, at the software level these wallets normally have layers of security such as the possibility of activating extra passwords.

  • Hardware Wallet: This is an electronic device where our private key is stored. They are similar to a pen-drive, so they can be connected to the computer through a USB port.

Well-known brands for this type of wallet are Ledger and Trezor.

  • Paper Wallet: These are the most secure and easy to use, since they only consist of a sheet of paper with our public and private key. We can get them in specific websites and print them, for example, for bitcoin, we can enter the page bitcaddress.org

The difference between the way we obtain the private key of this wallet with the previous ones is that here we have the key as such (several alphanumeric characters), while in the others we only have an abstraction of the key in 12 more words, called seeds, which are the ones that should be written down and kept in a safe place to keep our funds.

Having clear this general panorama about the different purses or Wallets that exist to store our funds, the recommendations that I give are

  • Choose the wallet according to the use we are going to give to our funds. If it is for savings, a hardware or paper wallet would be good, if instead it is for a more or less short or medium term use, the software is ideal, while if you are going to make a punctual trading operation, the ones that facilitate the exchanges.

  • Independently of the chosen wallet, investigate well about the company or developer that provides it: characteristics, forms of use, reputation, etc.

  • Last but not least, if it is our personal wallet, never give the private key, which is called that for a reason.
