The Fantastica Chronicles (Day 385)

Hello Everyone!

A brief introduction: Hi I am Jacob.

TL;DR: There is no tl;dr because you should have more patience and attention span than a gnat on a high wind.

The Fantastica Chronicles Day 385!

Working More On The Stone Walkway

I got started doing stuff rather early today after getting a pretty good night's rest. The previous day's activities had left me feeling worn out so I was not up all that late. I also ate a bunch of food which is probably something that I should start doing just after dark so that I am not up late and also eating dinner late in the evening. My sleep schedule is still a bit all over the place but I have at least been waking up before dawn on most mornings.

Since I stacked up a small pile of pavers yesterday inside the dog yard I saw them first thing this morning and after doing all my usual chores I went to work laying more pavers below the porch and expanded upon the walkway that I started yesterday. I do not know if I mentioned it before but when it rains there are a few places in the dog yard that can be quite treacherous (aside from just where I step off the porch) and last winter I slipped numerous times in those places and really want to avoid doing that again this year. Last winter I also had a ramp leading to the shelter door instead of the porch which damn sure accounted for a lot of my actual 'slip and falls' but plenty of them occurred in the yard itself also and especially where the elevation changes.

I spent pretty much all day laying more stones along my main walkway and even wound up making some steps where the most drastic elevation change occurs. I ran out of the stones that I gathered yesterday pretty quickly so I spent a good bit of time wondering around the woods looking for more flat stones and lugging them back to the dog yard. Since I was making 'steps' I had to be pretty picky about the stones that I used because they needed to be big but not too big and somehow fit up against (or just beneath the edge) of the stone positioned above it.

The entire process of laying those kinds of pavers is really time consuming especially since more often than not only one side of the stone is truly flat enough to make a good paver to walk on. So I have to dig out a place for the stone to fit and shape the hole to the contours of the stone in such a way that the stone fits snugly in place without a bunch of empty space below them that critters might later occupy. Sometimes I will even spend long minutes getting a stone in place then later decide I do not like it and use another stone there altogether.

It is tedious work but I really like how the final product looks when it is finished. Most of the stones stay put but occasionally after walking on them a bunch one will work itself lose a bit and move when I step on it which is fine and all as long as it eventually settles into place. If they do not settle in place I use small flat stones around its edge to sort of shim it up and keep it from moving.

Anyway, I am tired and it is late and I do not have much more to report today. I hope that everyone is doing well and has a nice day/night.

The stone walkway came out pretty nice!

Thanks for reading!

More about me: I have been doing property caretaking (land stewardship) for many years (decades) and live a rather simple life with my dogs doing what most folks would consider to be an 'alternative minimalist lifestyle' but what I often just think of as a low-impact lifestyle where I get to homestead and spend the majority of my time alone with my dogs in the woods doing projects in the warmer months and taking some downtime during the colder months.

A little over three years ago I began sharing the adventures (misadventures) of my life via writing, videos, pictures and the occasional podcasts and although my intention was to simply share my life with some friends it undoubtedly grew into much more than that over the years and now I find myself doing what equates to a full-time job just 'sharing my life' which is not even all that glamorous or anything but hey folks seem to enjoy it so I just keep doing it!

The way that the Fantastica Chronicles came about is that I was living at another place when I started chronicling and sharing my days but eventually I wound up moving to a new place. The new place is a homestead named 'Fantastica' so I started with 'Day 1' upon my arrival here and just kept documenting my days much like I had done for the previous nine hundred and fifty-seven days at the last place that I lived.

I have mostly done that 'documenting' at Fantastica exclusively with words (and pictures) opting not to do the videos because as I learned at the last place, sharing videos over an intermittent and slow internet connection is horribly time consuming and what I often think of as an 'ulcer inducing' experience. All that said, I opted for simplicity with the documentation and have no real regrets for doing so.

The way that I look at it is that I give it all my best each day and while some stuff I write is better than others I think that for the most part I do a pretty good job at doing what I am doing which is simply 'sharing my life' as candidly as I possibly can and whatever folks get (or do not get) from it there is always the satisfaction of me doing what I set out to do... which is to simply share my life.
