The Mechanical Failure that Drove Me Crazy

My Bad Experience with Mechanics

Greetings, dear Hive community. Today I am going to tell you about bad mechanical experiences, following an interesting call from the wonderful people of @ocd and @hivemotors and I will tell you about an event that happened to me some years ago., but at the time, it caused me a lot of inconveniences, frustration, and discomfort.

I have owned two Chevrolet Corsa vehicles. One of them a 2001 four-door and the other a 2006 two-door Speed. Currently, I no longer own them, but I will tell you about what happened to me on a certain occasion with the four-door.

At some point, the car started with a small failure when it was running for a while, which intensified as the days went by. It consisted of a malfunction of the engine, which seemed to run out of gas or lack of current. This failure was intensifying to the point that I could no longer use the vehicle since when I started it, it would run for two or three minutes, it would start to piston and then it would lose all power or it would turn off. Occasionally, the fault was fixed, but only for a few minutes and then the problem returned.

That was the beginning of the trouble that caused me so many misfortunes. During a period of approximately two weeks, I performed some checks and diagnostics that I will list below:

Spark plugs: At first, I thought it might be the spark plugs that did not allow an ideal current flow and good combustion. So, first I proceeded to check, clean, and adjust them. The car, as usual, worked for a moment, and then the failed. I then proceeded to change the spark plugs for new ones, but the failure continued.

Wires: I then proceeded to change the spark plug wires, as I was in the habit of doing it at least once a year. I bought a new set of spark plug wires, but it was useless, the car remained the same, with the same problem and more and more pronounced.

Injectors: I decided to perform maintenance on the fuel injection system, cleaning all these components including the air filter, air inlet, acceleration body, flute, and injectors by ultrasound, without success.

Fuel Pump: I focused on diagnosing and cleaning the fuel pump, filters, and hoses. This whole system was working great and I only changed the fuel filters. But still, the car was not running the same.

With three weeks in this hustle and bustle, without a vehicle, you can imagine the frustration. My trusted mechanic helped me and recommended possible causes and solutions, but with no results, I sought other opinions, which were generally the same. I received several theories, which included disassembling the engine to rule out internal anomalies in the cam, pistons, cams, and crankshaft. I discarded this option because it was expensive and in my opinion, it was not necessary.

After two months without a solution, I took a recommendation from a mechanic I knew, that I should evaluate the replacement of the electric coil. This was quite expensive at that time and I had changed it less than three months ago, so it was almost new, and that is why I did not consider it at first. The final recommendation was to submit the car to a diagnostic electronic scanner, which would be the definitive and accurate evaluation to get to the bottom of the problem.

This activity meant incurring expenses to mobilize the vehicle with a crane and the cancellation of this specialized work. In the modern workshop, the vehicle is connected to a computer that scans all the sensors and electronic systems and after a few minutes, the verdict is issued: "My friend, the coil is fried and that is what is failing".

The Corsa Speed: I couldn't find any pictures of the four doors car, but I share this one, where my son (now 19) appears in the vehicle.

Believe me, it was an onerous expense to buy the new coil, but the effort was made, the money was invested and it was purchased. When the moment of truth arrived, with the new coil already installed, with all the previous files of repairs and new parts, I was confident that it would be the end of the matter. The key is passed, the vehicle starts as a "thief car", it works perfectly for 1,2,3,4 minutes and.... the story of the mysterious and irreparable failure repeats itself. The rage, with the frustration, the desire to cry and to break something, everything is mixed, there is no solution.

After about a month without a vehicle and in an informal conversation with an acquaintance from work, she asks me about the vehicle. I tell her the sad tale of vicissitudes and misfortunes with this demon failure and very smiling she tells me that she and her husband had gone through this same situation with a vehicle of the same model. She explained to me that the problem was due to the crankshaft pinion, a small gear that goes in front of the damper and whose job is to synchronize the time of the engine for the electrical discharge and fuel injection. It turns out that due to the wear suffered in the damper guide, the pinion was moving and the timing synchronization was lost and hence the insufferable failure. It was a logical and simple solution.

To sum up, the cost of this small part was just a fraction of the expensive coil plus all the money invested in the other parts. The damper of my vehicle had wear where the pinion fits and when it moved, the damned failure was generated. A solution that took me less than half a day to apply. And you can't imagine the satisfaction when the vehicle started and kept working normally for a long time. It was necessary to apply a cold welding type glue to avoid the movement of the pinion due to the wear in the groove. The other ideal solution is to take the damper to a lathe to have the guide rebuilt or replace the damper. Sometime later, I sold the vehicle and of course, I warned the buyer of all this story that I am telling you here so that he would be forewarned. I never heard of him having any problems because of this.

La Falla Mecanica que me Volvio Loco

Mi Mala Experiencia con la Mecanica

Saludos, querida comunidad Hive.
