The Swing is Back [EN/ES]

It is quite clear that there are musical genres that have never gone (or will go) out of style. They can undergo modifications or alterations in their style, but always respecting their essence. Take for example pop music. Since its origin (at the end of the 50s of the last century) it has always been fashionable and in constant use, although with some modifications. From soft-pop, to acoustic pop, Latin pop, dance-pop, indie-pop, or electro-pop (among many others). But there are musical genres that, throughout their history, have gone from being protagonists, to being in the background. Among these would be the Swing.

It is said that, within the world of fashion, everything has its cycle and that from time to time (it is estimated to be approximately 20 years) it becomes fashionable again. With the swing, this premise could even be applied, if we look at its evolution in the last 60 years.

Esta bastante claro que hay géneros musicales que nunca han pasado (ni pasaran) de moda. Pueden experimentar modificaciones o alteraciones en su estilo, pero siempre respetando su esencia. Pongamos por ejemplo la música pop. Desde su origen (a finales de los años 50 del pasado siglo) siempre ha estado de moda y en constante uso, aunque con algunas modificaciones. Desde el soft-pop, al pop acústico, el pop latino, el dance-pop, el indie-pop, o el electro-pop (entre muchos otros). Pero sí que hay géneros musicales que, a lo largo de su historia han pasado de ser protagonistas, a estar en un segundo plano. Entre estos estaría el Swing.

Se dice que, dentro del mundo de la moda, todo tiene su ciclo y que cada cierto tiempo (está estimado aproximadamente en unos 20 años) vuelve a estar de moda. Con el swing se podría incluso aplicar esta premisa, si atendemos a la evolución de este en los últimos 60 años.

Swing

Since its inception (back in 1930), swing music is a musical genre derived from jazz, in which its instrumentation was based mainly on the use of the piano, double bass, and drums (essential in jazz), in addition to the use of instruments of the metal family, such as trumpets and trombones, supported by saxophones, clarinets, and very occasionally by stringed instruments, such as the guitar or the violin.

Medium and fast tempos are used, predominating the more rhythmic and melodic music (unlike jazz), using a tension resource such as the riff, which consists of the repetition of a series of short notes, with an increasing ending.

In addition, with swing, the number of members within a band increased, giving rise to the so-called Big Band.

Artists like Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, or Count Basie have been the main exponents of this musical genre, which fell into disuse at the end of the 50s (probably due to the emergence of the pop genre).

As we have commented previously, all the fashions in the end return. And the same thing happened with swing at the beginning of the 90s, with the so-called Neoswing genre (or subgenre). It was as a result of the North American band Royal Crown Revue that, supported by the music industry, and the film industry (appearing in films such as Los Rebeldes del Swing (1993), or La Máscara (1994) starring the comedian Jim Carrey, relaunched this genre musical, already with slight touches of ska music, rock and roll, and even punk.

Swing

Desde sus inicios (allá por el 1930), la música swing es un género musical derivado del jazz, en la que su instrumentación se basaba principalmente en el uso del piano, contrabajo, y batería (indispensables dentro del jazz), además del uso de instrumentos de la familia de los metales, como las trompetas y trombones, apoyados por saxofones, clarinetes, y muy ocasionalmente por instrumentos de cuerda, como la guitarra o el violín.

Se utilizan tempos medios y rápidos, predominando la música más rítmica y melódica (a diferencia del jazz), utilizando un recurso de tensión como es el riff, que consiste en la repetición de una serie de notas cortas, con un final increscendo.

Además, con el swing se incrementó el número de miembros dentro de una banda, dando origen a las denominadas Big Band.

Artistas como Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, o Count Basie han sido los principales exponentes de este género musical, que entro en desuso a finales de los 50 (probablemente a raíz de la aparición del género pop).
Como hemos comentado anteriormente, todas las modas al final vuelven. Y con el swing sucedió lo mismo al principio de los años 90, con el denominado género (o subgénero) Neoswing. Fue a raíz de la banda norteamericana Royal Crown Revue que, apoyados por la industria musical, y la cinematográfica (apareciendo en películas como Los Rebeldes del Swing (1993), o La Máscara (1994) protagonizada por el cómico Jim Carrey, relanzaron este género musical, ya con leves toques de música ska, rock and roll, e incluso el punk.

To this day, swing is once again very fashionable in the music scene, even deriving its dance (very happy and dynamic) in the new running, Enjoy.
