For the Love of Clay Plaster: Building a Sauna

image.png

@mountainjewel

In Finnish tradition, when one first moves to the land they build a sauna that they can use and live in the first year while getting their feet on the ground. It serves the dual purpose of providing a restorative haven and also a tiny home of sorts while they establish other infrastructure.
When we moved to the land at Mountain Jewel we had basically no building skills. We were gardeners and needed a home on our raw piece of land as a necessity, but it wasn't what excited us about homesteading. To house us that first year we bought a used yurt on Craigslist.

Foraging, Ethnic Lisu Flavours and Tribal Food Culture

image.png

@artemislives

They were utterly mystified and came to look.
"Why foreigner want to eat and cook poor people's food?" was the question of the day.
In one of life's lovely ironies, those we came to observe, share with and learn from stared blankly back at us. Several men from the village who had come to wonder, stared especially as we awkwardly donned the traditional Lisu hand-woven farmer's baskets and wandered off to the edge of the jungle to find our lunch.

Jessica Kill, Embezzlement, Fraud, and Anarchapulco

image.png

@scottermonkey

PLEASE boycott Anarchapulco til they remove this person and let them know why! Their producer (a) isn't an Anarchist; and (b) more importantly, she is a scammer.
Anarchapulco before the corruption
I miss the event. I ran Registration Desk in 2017 because I cared. It still has some good points. But I refuse to go or otherwise contribute when my money is being used to fund and encourage corruption and mismanagement.
A damning account of Jessica Kill's dishonesty and lack of integrity

Genetic Engineering Breakthroughs: First ever truly GMO cannabis plants

@alchemage

The cannabis company Trait Biosciences has recently put out an incredible new breakthrough in genetic engineering for the cannabis industry. By inserting a gene that codes for the same enzyme that metabolizes drugs in our body, and an enzyme that binds simple sugars to molecules, Trait Biosciences has developed and patented a cannabis plant which produces water soluble cannabinioids! While generally cannabinoids are nonpolar and only soluble in oils, fats, and other typical organic solvents, the binding of the simple sugar to the cannabinoids effectively alters their polarity (the overall distribution of charge [think - magnet]) allowing them to become soluble in polarsolvents such as water.

@vincentnijman

My focus was elsewhere lately, due to traveling back to Portugal but I'm settled in again in the beautiful Monte Frio and am slowly but steadily finding the peace of mind to create again and focus on game making once more.
Do you know this feeling of being so excited about something that you start without any research or preparation? This is what I felt with this game making program called Bitsy. It didn't help that my brother - who is a game making pro - told me that he expected me to make my first game in an hour ( or two ). That only made me more impatient.

Professor Advocates Social Engineering to Bring Social Credit System to Western Society

image.png

@krnel

Much of what shifts in society doesn't happen quickly. It takes time. And the hands of power know this well. It takes gradual changes and influence to bring about the changes they want. Gradualism is key, and using media to gradually influence society how much has been changed in recent decades.
Professor Larry Backer of Penn State University suggests the same for adopting a social credit system of control over society. In a 2018 paper, he suggests resistance to the social credit system, like that being used in China, can be overcome by using "the great culture management machinery of Western society" to alter the legal system "from constitution and rule of law to analytics and algorithm".

It’s Spring... And... Nettles!

image.png

@metametheus

Here in Melbourne, spring is most definitely here, with trees in blossom, and the garden becoming quite significantly greener (and longer) with all this rain and intermittent sunshine.
In Taoist belief, this is the time when the Wood-phase energy is strongest - an immense bursting energy is required to push out of the seed-slumber of winter and push through out into the sunshine.
So too in our bodies; the Wood-phase (can be at any time of year, this is describing a physiological process) is about the free-flow of Qì through our bodies. The preceding Water-phase is about conservation of energy, and in the 5-Elements correspondence system, Water nourishes and feeds Wood.

The Blame Game

image.png

@trucklife-family

When are we going to stop this Blame Game. Indeed it is easier to point our fingers at others instead of looking at how we live and how we have gotten to where we are today. Accusing others, means we do not need to acknowledge what we have done, that we may indeed have had a part to play in how the way the world stands today.
It is so great, to see so many people becoming more aware about the environment, about the impact that our advancements have had on the plant. It is so inspiring watching the younger generations unite under their desire to see change, putting pressure on those in power to act and to finally be held accountable for what they have permitted to happen to our home.

A Typical Day at the Ecovillage of My Dreams - Ecotrain's Question of the Week

image.png

@stortebeker

In last week's QOTW @ecotrain has discussed the three aspects we considered most important for the ecovillage of our dreams. There were many interesting posts published to answer this question, inspiring each other with great ideas. If you've missed it, take a look at the wrap-up post!
This week we're staying with ecovillages, as i this week's QOTW they are asking us how we would spend our typical day. Or was a perfect day? Ideally the two should be one and the same, since I think an important aspect of perfection would be that it's not just a once-in-a-lifetime thing, but something normal, occurring on a usual basis. So let's see... what's my favorite way of spending my days?

Medicine Journals: A Witches Garden

image.png

@riverflows

When I was a kid, if I was going to chose between being a witch and being a fairy, I'd always choose the witch. The witch was the outcast, but she was also the wise woman, albeit misunderstood. And she'd always have potions and cauldrons and herbs hanging from the rafters, at one with nature in her cottage in the woods. She knew a lot more than fairies, because she could talk to the animals, shapeshift (who wouldn't want to be an owl or a fox?) and knew which plants could poison, or cure.

Externalise. Recognise. Sympathise.

Backyard Cannabis Farming 2019 - Episode 14: Greenhouse Wind Damage Repair, Caterpillar Infestation Solutions, Releasing Beneficial Bugs, Recognizing Botrytis, Washing Flowers, How to Half a Plant, & Garden Security

image.png

@elamental

This episode cover A LOT over a ten day span of grow documentation. While I have been going through a lot personally, my grow has as well. I had almost everything bad happen to my plants this year, and the closer they get to finishing, the more problems seemingly pop up. This year's obstacles include my entire greenhouse collapsing on my plants (bending tops and breaking branches), aphids, still mites, caterpillars eating my big buds and causing botrytis (and botrytis caused by extreme weather), high heat and constant direct light for long periods causing heat stress and light burn, damaging wind storms & uncharacteristic lightning storms, nutrient burn, nutrient deficiencies from nute-lockout, random rains before and after heat waves, burning from Safer brand products twice, removing two HUGE plants from the garden that turned out to be males (one of which was over 7 ft tall), light leaks into the grow from a neighbor's house, and stepping in dog feces on countless occasions in the backyard from animals I do not own.

Why Donald Trump Is The Best President Of My Lifetime

image.png

@kennyskitchen

Is the title click-baity? Sure, but I'm OK with that. Let's start off with just a couple of basics:
Do I agree with Trump on economics? Nope.
Do I agree with Trump on politics? Nope, I am morally opposed to the existence of politics.
Did I vote for Trump? Nope, I am morally opposed to forcing others to abide by my preferences & beliefs, so I've never voted.
Do I pay Trump's presidential salary? Nope, I am morally opposed to genocide, kidnapping, extortion, and all other forms of violence & coercion, so I do not support them financially (paying taxes).

A big thank you to @hungryhustle for creating the amazing infographic of the 8 Pillars Of TribeSteemUp and For @eco-alex for creating the tribesteemup banner and logo.
