What a Perfect Day Look Like? - TribeSteemUp BiWeekly Question

Hello Kind Mindful Steemians!

Perfect day?........Hmmmm......What's your perfect day look like? I'm not sure if I know mine. But I do love this quote from Eckhart Tolle:

And, I do have some idea as to what a good day means to me.
Wake up early morning with the birds singing on my rooftop. Brief exercise – push ups, sit ups, some simple yoga postures. Alternate nostrils breathing and OM chanting. Then meditate for an hour. That’s my early morning ritual (if you like to call it) to get ready to enjoy the day. This is how my Good early morning looks like and mostly it is in my control so to speak. Well, of course, except that the birds might not sing in the winter.

And as the day starts lots of things can be out of my control both good and bad – for example, Bitcoin breaking $13K level in over 18 months :)? Or getting an angry email. Or bad news. Or the Sunshine. These external influencers are likely to have an impact on how we perceive the day. And, yes, generally, if the day goes according to our likings then we call it a good day. And on the contrary, if it goes against our likings we call it a bad day. “What a horrible day? It’s been raining all day long.” “Oh…I had a great day… I got 70% off on my gadget.” And so on. Not that uncommon to hear these remarks, right?

For me, however, the judgement is based on whether I’ve done my best on the things that I have control over on that day. And, the noble Eight-fold path, is my compass.

I call them Right E-MUSICAL i.e. Right Effort, Mindfulness, Understanding, Speech, Intention, Concentration, Action and Livelihood

For me, whether I'm having a good Good Day is based on whether or not I lived that day in line with the Eight-Fold Noble paths to the best of my abilities and intentions. As shown in the picture above, these Eight-Fold Noble paths can be aggregated into three basic constituents of Buddha's teaching:

  1. Shila (Moral Precept)
  2. Samadhi (Concentration) and
  3. Panna (Wisdom)

Shila (Moral Precept)
Right Action, Right Speech and Right Livelihood fall into Shila. Right action refers to abstaining from intoxication and sexual misconduct. Right speech refers to abstaining from speaking lies, backbiting, spreading hatred etc. And Right livelihood refers to not killing and stealing etc. Although, at the philosophical level these are interpreted at a much deeper level such as dependent on detachment and so on.

Samadhi (Concentration)
Right effort, right mindfulness and right concentration fall into this training. Here, one makes the right effort to practice pure insight (Vipasanna) as well as tranquillity and insight such as Jhanas etc. In layman term, it can be called a regular meditation practice.

Panna (Wisdom)
Right view and right thought as part of Panna arise when one's Shila and Samadhi are strong. At the same time, wisdom and insights help strengthen Shila and Samadhi and vice versa. Thus, these three teachings / trainings can be considered supporting each other rather than a linear function.

So, the Eight-Fold Noble path is my judge to decide how my day has been. As my beloved venerable teacher, SN Goenkaji used to say “Everyone laughs and smile when life flows like a beautiful song. But a wise man is the man who can smile even when everything goes dead wrong.” Knowing the truth of impermanence one lives in equanimity without craving and aversion. Not that I’m there yet, but I am trying to walk on this path of eight-fold noble path which has been the guiding principles of my life for last decade. And, if I am living the day in line with these Eight-Fold Noble paths (to the best of my abilities and intentions) then I am happy to call it a good day.

I guess every day is "perfect" when the outer veneer and measure is removed... being drawn back to the eternal still place center is profound and life changing. I was curious tho what the rest of your perfect day would have looked like... after explaining the theory. ;)
