10 Cent Well Spent - A #treasurefinds Entry

avatar

This post finds it's inspiration from two sources at the same time. A couple of days ago, I was scrolling on my phone, having a look at the various posts on the Steem Blockchain. Whilst I did so, I was enjoying a nice relaxing cup of tea and I started reading one of @steematt's posts about his curbside and thrift store finds that he not only saves from landfill, but actually on-sells to make himself some pretty decent coin as well - seriously inspiring stuff and worth a read.

As I looked down at the mug from which I supped, the history of the mug came back to me.

It was around January or February 1994, and I had just graduated high school and moved from my parents house in the country, to my grandparents house in the city whilst I attended University.

My Grandmother (who is will be turning 93 next month), was an avid thrifter. She loved going to what we in Australia call Op Shops (which is basically a thrift store), and Garage Sales (yard sales). When I moved in with them, I enjoyed tagging along (my Grandfather liked it too because it meant he didn't have to go).

It was on one of these adventures where I found this little treasure.

The mug was sitting on a table of odds and ends, and as I had only recently reached the legal drinking age at that time, tickled my sense of humour. When I enquired as to the price, I was told I could take the mug for the princely sum of 10 cents.

Yep. One of these little coins..

Even a poor student like me could afford that. That was more than 25 years ago, and the mug is still with me, and is still my go to mug whenever I have a cuppa. In that time, the mug has been with me at 10 different addresses, survived many close calls, and more importantly, has held copious quantities of tea and coffee.

In terms of value for money, this little treasure has really been an amazing find, and there's even a chance I saved it from ending up in landfill somewhere.

I'm definitely an Aussie alright. I grew up in country Victoria, but was lured to Tassie by my wife and have been here almost 17 years.
