Travel the U.K. in January?
If I was to give you some great travel advice about tourism in this rain sodden country it would be...
First check the month.., if it says January then cancel your plans.
You see January is a great month to travel if you are the miserly type. The reason for this is everywhere you go the same words are repeated.
CLOSED
I wouldn’t say the stopovers are any cheaper or even less busy but as everything is most definitely shut then that money can remain firmly in your pocket.
We encountered many such closures, and initially thought we were just being unlucky.
While we didn’t need to pay £4 for the privilege of walking to the fort that is open every month except January, some other unfortunate tourists did pay and warned us.
Lanercost Priory ruins are open all year around, that is except January.
Lindisfarne Castle would have been great, but it was er.. CLOSED.
We almost got busted for not paying on the pay car park, but managed to drive away foiling the car park dude who drove up to us shaking his fist.
Yes the twat wanted to charge us for parking here for around an hour.
Finally we drove back to Alnwick hoping to see the Harry Potter castle, however....
Yes it was closed but opens next week. Thats February, not January as January is the month when everything is most definitely CLOSED.
A stroll around the town didn’t go to plan with coffee shops actually CLOSING in front of our eyes when approached.
Do we stink so badly?
At least 2 coffee shops closed at 3.40pm, that when the sun goes down. They have some strange customs up here.
Another Steemian recommended the Poison Garden.. but of course it was CLOSED.
Tomorrow we go home and hopefully to the county of open venues.
So just don’t travel in January OK, you have been warned unless your partial to seeing the word CLOSED.
Travel the UK in January, and freeze your tits off outside old buildings.
The pubs are nice and warm though :)
Well speaking of pubs, last night was The Hoggs Head, very nice and tonight it’s The Burrows.
Apologies for the Harry Potter references and if you don’t know what I’m talking about, it’s a bit like that up here!
I'm a fan, those books taught my daughter how to read :)
In that case you have an idea of what The Burrows would look like.
I'm staying in the house that jack built tonight,
Its not called as such but should be. Not seen anything quite like it.
There is one reason to go to the north (although a bit further) I experienced 20 years ago:
I booked a house on Isle of Skye, expecting a rough and demanding brutal weather, cozy huddling up in front of a fireplace while the gale is scraming outside.
We ended up spending two weeks in T-Shirts, while the rest of Europe froze. In a way it was disappointing.
And around there, there was nothing, so no worries about closed places in January... For sure it would be hard to find sunblocker...
The weather can be crazy up north. While it’s been pissing down in Lancashire, it’s sunny here.
Skye is an awesome place, visited in 2018, in the summer and had amazing weather. I hear that’s not normal. Think we were both lucky.

The whole concept of closing ruins is too funny.
I was tempted to jump in Urbex style, it was a little high. No windows in ruins!
Aw. You wouldn't expect everything to be closed. I thought it would just be the wet weather that was the possiblity but no!
The weather was great for photography, streaming sun through dark brooding clouds. Can’t wait to see these filtered.
We made the most of a mistimed trip, like you do.
Advantages must be taken when permitted!!
I guess 'The January Travellers Guide to Britain' would be quite a short volume...
I'm not sure if it's a countrywide phenomena, I hope not!
It's similar round here in Wales.
Well I guess some places won't get enough visitors to justify opening. It's not the time of year I'd chose to travel the country, but I guess anywhere that was open would not have much of a queue.
There’s few others, most looking bewildered like us at nothing being open.

Thanks for the warning.
Thats why I avoid going back at the beginning at the beginning of the year now. Went back in Feb 2018, the only happy thing, and that welcomed me, was my family
