A Hike at Smith Rock on a Spring Like Day in Winter

(Edited)

Hi all! Follow along as we take a hike at Smith Rock State Park near Terrebonne in Central Oregon. A day that started with some high clouds and ended with beautiful blue skies. After paying the $5.00 parking fee we start our decent into the canyon to the Crooked River below.

This is the first of many rock formations throughout the park. I like the way the mid-morning light was playing off the rocks. Mt Bachelor can be seen on the far left of the image.

This shot shows Mt Washington to the west.

A couple shots of raptors flying overhead. Drone flying here was suspended February 1 for raptor nesting season. I will show a couple nests a little further into the hike.

Continuing down into the canyon this image shows an oddly balanced rock between two other formations.

Juniper berries.

A small cave on the opposite side of the river as we approach the bottom. The trail we will take today starts at the gap in the fence on the right side. It is called The Homestead Trail.

A panoramic shot as we start our approximately 3/4 mile trip along the trail.

Another view as we round a bend in the trail. In the upper middle of the shot you can see some white with brown in the middle. This is a raptor nest that I will show more of later.

A couple more of the bird species that abound in the park.

More rock formations as we near the end of the trail.

Here are a couple shots of the raptor nest I showed earlier. Sorry for the blurriness these are extreme zoom shots taken by an unsteady hand. :)

Some more possible nesting sights.

Our little picnic spot by the Crooked River.

The Hike Back

The following shots were taken looking back at where we had just been. I really enjoyed the lighting and the blue sky so I may have gone a little crazy with the panoramas. :)

A shot as we begin our ascent out of the canyon. This was a pretty steep part of the hike so a good place for a rest. :)

A couple more shots at the top before heading to the car and a short drive for lunch and a beer!

A couple Google earth images of my hike and its relative location.

Photos taken by me, @oldmans, with a Nikon D3300 and some Lightroom post processing.

Thanks for looking and enjoy your day!

Great hike and I love the panoramas - all of them :)
When you have such big vistas with these amazing rock formations panoramas look best in my eyes and you have done a very good job.
Also the photo of Mt Washington between these rock formations looks really good.

I cannot understand travelfeed's decision, but maybe you have written too few words. When I make a travelfeed post I post via travelfeed.io. They have a nice editor too.

I would be quite !DERANGED if I didn't give you a !BEER and a !COFFEEA for this $trdo post 😉

Thank you Johann! I agree about panoramas with the rock formations. I even tried my new lens for some of the panos. :) I did learn a lot more about using my camera settings on this outing. Luckily Lightroom was there to save me on some of the shots.

I'm always over the 250 words so I should be good there. I got up votes from them when I first started using the tag, but haven't had much love from them lately. C'est la vie I guess. :)

I've tried their editor but still haven't been able to post through it. Probably something on my end. I started this post on it but the first image I up-loaded was all stretched out. Again, probably on my end. I will keep trying though. I'm nothing if not stubborn. :)

You're welcome @oldmans 🙂
That's right, Lightroom is a partner I would not want to miss anymore - no image leaves my computer without going through Lightroom and Photoshop ;)

I have not counted your words, I just thought this might be the reason because I wouldn't find any other reason. Maybe they just want everybody to post from their website, but I don't know.
I'm always switching to the HTML Markup editor, because I prefer writing that way. That way I haven't had any issues yet.
