One of the most temperate climates in the world – travel along the Garden Route 365

Welcome to another edition of the Shape of the Cape with your host Julescape. Today we discuss the temperate quality of the Garden Route on the South African southernmost coastline. It will be hard to find a more mild and easy climate on the senses than the Garden Route. Be sure to add it to your travel itinerary any time of the year. This “goldilocks zone” is a must for all global trekkers.

To find a more mild climate you might have to go to the other “Mediterranean climate” on the planet, namely Portugal, for example, also situated at the same latitude, but just in the north of the planet. Like the south Cape coastline, they have fine warm summers with minimal rain. Other comparable places might be Mexico, Colombia or Costa Rica for example. Of course, here it has no tropical climate, and so is probably even milder.

Winters drop to around 10C (50F) in the early mornings in this region but then climb up to an average of 20C (68F) during the day. And summers are great for outdoor seaside activity as temperatures range in the upper 20C (77F) to the odd upper 30C (97F) at most, sometimes in February or thereabouts. So you will love it if you’re from colder regions up north. And any further to the south of here is nothing but ocean until Antarctica. No lack of space and fresh air, that’s for sure. Not like EU or UK or Asia. You could fit the entire country of Portugal in just one province here. The length of Portugal will fit along the Garden Route alone, from Cape Aughulas to Plettenberg Bay.

Aughulas is the official southernmost point in Africa by a slim margin, and here in the Garden Route we are just slightly further north, but not by much. Perhaps one of these days I will do a post and video with exploratory adventure to the southernmost tip of Africa in a future episode, so watch this space. An entire country’s worth of hidden treasure coastal resorts lies in wait for us along the south Cape coast of Africa and beyond.

Anyway, you may find milder climates in Hawaii, for example, but there are much cheaper facilities in the South African market due to the exchange rate for international travelers. At ZAR14/$1 you get a pretty good deal and the areas I personally visit here on the channel are free to explore. I have lived in Cape Town, a truly beautiful world class gem of a city due to its natural ecology and landscape, but the Garden Route is on par with that – though in a smaller way. The environment here is conducive to ocean adventures, forest hikes, mountain biking, horse riding, canoeing upriver and more. I will show you around if you ever come for a visit, so look me up when you arrive, unless I’m also roaming the rest of the planet for any other beaches that are also worthy of the channel, even if not in the Cape.

There may be many more treasure resorts around the world, and much to explore, but the Garden Route is a must-see. Cheap, quiet and easy to explore, it is the natural indigenous habitat to elephants, of which a few still exist in parks here now, and leopard or other wildlife are still roaming wild, hunting for rock rabbits, deer or even baboons on occasion in the indigenous bush all over this area. You will discover many great memories for your travel agenda in this region, I certainly have.
