A few days ago I ordered something in an unnamed e-shop. To pick up the order I chose a personal pickup in Pilsen.

I had no idea where exactly the sampling point in Pilsen can be found. As I found out after a short chat with an e-shop worker, the dispensing point is in the warehouse in Pilsen-Křimice in the area of the former collective farm on the hill called Hornička.

This classic hill I used to ride on a three-wheeled Libertar when the JZD was still in operation for a massive snorting and prying for “rams”. It was a hard slog.

Today, together with @ garygeo1, I arrived at a public transport location. We got off on the final bus at the railway viaduct in a place with a typical name Dolov.

After climbing from Dolov to Hornička we found ourselves at the Church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary.

The original chapel was founded here in 1646 by Jan Jindřich Strojetický of Strojetice, who married Voršila of Vrtba. He lost his wife in 1624, he himself died in 1648 without an heir.

The manor after his death and hence the chapel passed after his death to the property of the noble family of Vrtba.

During the Vrtba family, Hornička was extended and rebuilt into a small church designed by architect F. M. Kaňka.

In the 19th century, in 1830, the last of the Vrtba family, František Josef, died. He bequeathed his estate to Prince John of Lobkowicz.

He adapted the underground church in 1846 to the family tomb.

This tomb can be seen through the windows at the foot of the perimeter walls of the church when masses or other events are held and the gate in the former cemetery wall is open.

As a kid, I liked looking into the mysterious crypt. Some of the windows also saw parts of flashy wooden and metal coffins. Frosty, icy air rose from the windows, smelling of moisture and old age…

The last funeral was held in this crypt in 2008, when Princess Gabriel of Lobkowicz died.

The church was repaired in the early nineties by Ing. Jaroslav Lobkowicz, restituent of the estate and at that time a member of the Parliament of the Czech Republic.

Yes, he is the son of Jaroslav Claude Lobkowicz, at that time a paver of the state road administration.

As if it was about him the Czech lyrics of the song "Paver"

On the façade of the church we find the family motto of the Lobkowicz, who are the only ones with their family motto in Czech… I was ashes, I was ashes, I will be ashes.

Behind the church there is a large area of the former agricultural cooperative. Nowadays, there are many companies and warehouses.

I went to one such institution. She was roughly where I handed over my retired bike for African children years ago.

I picked up the package and went back to the bus. He drove us in half an hour.

We used this time to walk around the local castle. We passed Křimice around this roundabout. It is dominated by a large head of cabbage as part of the emblem of Křimice, now the Pilsen District No. 5.

Křimice sauerkraut is renowned for its quality and taste. It can be found everywhere in the surrounding fields, lying in the fertile floodplains of the river Mže. The famous Cabbage Festival takes place here every year, where you can taste this delicious dish and try how the cabbage works.

It is a disgrace, but I haven't visited this festival yet…

After the roundabout it is just a short walk to the castle. The castle itself is inaccessible. It is undergoing gradual restoration. We can only look at the English park.

Unfortunately, we do not have so much time today. Let's take a look at the front of the castle.

The chateau is at the head of an elongated square. On its enclosure wall you will find valuable Baroque statues by Lazar Widman. This prominent artist also created a monumental equestrian statue of St. George from 1732, which unfortunately we do not see, since it has been hidden since 1970s in unsightly wooden formwork.

It is still waiting for its reconstruction…

In the middle of the 13th century, a fortress built by Drslavice stood in the original place of the chateau.

Under František Václav of Vrtba, the fortress underwent a reconstruction in 1732 into a Baroque chateau. The Vrtb family owned the chateau until 1830, and in 1811–1812 it underwent a reconstruction in the Empire style with a Classicist façade.

The author of the plans of the Baroque building was probably František Maxmilián Kaňka, the architect of the Empire reconstruction was František Ignác Prée. In 1830, the estate was inherited by Prince Jan Karel of Lobkowicz and remained in the Lobkowicz possession until 1948, when it was nationalized.

After nationalization, the boarding house of Plzeňská Škodovka resided in the chateau. Since 1965 the chateau has been owned by the Youth Home in Pilsen and since 1974 it has been the depository of the West Bohemian Museum. However, none of the owners practically cared for the chateau, so the estate was abandoned and buildings deteriorated.

In 1994, the property under restitution was returned to the Lobkowicz family.

We still have a few minutes until the bus leaves. Let's take a look at the river Mze. Here you can see the massive foundations of the chateau, which still originate from the original masonry of the Drslavice fortress. There are also interesting drainage galleries.

The chateau is located in the immediate vicinity of the river Mže. You will find a former mill drive with a unique adjustable Záhorský weir and a modern island with mini golf and a restaurant.

However, time stopped near the old castle walls. As a kid, I admired mysterious deep cellars and old galleries leading into the interior of old walls.

We will return together to the bus stop. Not far from here we will see the beautiful sculpture Pieta dating from before 1750. Its author is again Lazar Widman.

On the square plinth, we find the Virgin Mary sitting with the dead Christ in her lap at the foot of the cross.

The upper part of the statue is a massive cross with draped drapery and three grieving little angels.

But what the hell? @ garygeo1 is already waving at me. The bus is just arriving…

I hope you enjoyed our walk around Křimice. Sights of Křimice I will introduce you closer in one of my next posts.
