Right in the middle!

Traveling around Greece I have seen many places. Well advertised resorts and hidden gems, overcrowded as well as isolated destinations, all kind of scenery, by the sea, by the mountain, by the lake and of course every kind of settlements, from little villages to towns and cities. No matter what I was expected (and a lot of times I wasn't expected much), there wasn't one place that I regretted to visit it. There wasn't one place that I didn't find something unique and beautiful and of course, there wasn't a place that I didn't find an abundance of excuses to take pictures all day (and night some times) long!

Lamia is not the first place you have to visit when you come to Greece but if you are traveling on the mainland, you'll definitely pass through. First of all is right in the middle!
And by that I mean that it is on the middle of the route that connects the capital Athens, on the south, with the second bigger city, Thessaloniki, on the north. A very comfy location :)

With a population of around 60.000 people it feels more like a big village and a walk to the castle (oh yes, it has a medieval castle, too) is enough to give you a panoramic view of the whole town.

The castle is well preserved and a nice spot to walk and overlook the surrounding mountainous scenery but if you are interested in the really old stuff you should go to the archeological museum. Lamia is one more of the Greek regions that are populated for thousands of years (this one at least 3 and possibly more than 5) and there are a lot of findings to document that.

Walking at the streets won't give you a clue of this long history but you'll enjoy a sprawling mix of different architectural samples from the foundation of modern Greece till nowadays, as well as a lot of public squares and statues of personalities that left their mark on the area.

And if you find yourself in the area you should drive a few extra km to the natural hot springs of Ypati. Even if you don't need it for therapeutic reasons it is a very nice experience!
