Dear friends, let me take you to a sizzling summer paradise, Playa Mia Grand Beach Park in Cozumel, Mexico. Cozumel is a small island off the coast of mainland Mexico. It is a hub of activity and a mecca for cruise ships. Cozumel was first settled by the Mayans in the 1st millennium AD. The Mayans believed that the island was sacred and belonged to the Goddess of the moon. Many temples and shrines were built across the island to worship her. When the Spanish arrived in the 16th Century, they destroyed the temples and wiped out the Mayan population by introducing smallpox to the community. Today, the San Gervasio ruins are located in the center of the island and are Cozumel's last remaining connection to the Mayan Civilization.

I am fascinated by history, although I love visiting the new attractions of a destination, I also enjoy visiting the ruins. I believe we can learn a lot from the past and by paying respect to our ancestors. I will be sharing some of the world's most impressive Mayan pyramid's with you in one of my later blogs. Today, I will be showcasing Playa Mia, Grand Beach Park.

Playa Mia Grand Beach Park is located a short drive away from Puerta Maya cruise ship terminal. There is an abundance of taxi's and buses that will transport you to the park for a fixed rate. I was personally invited by the General Director of the Park, the amazing Mr Cervantes to review the facility. First and foremost I have to commend the hospitality of the staff at the park.

This grand beach park had humble beginnings back in 1984 and had to be completely re-built in 2005 after it was destroyed by two intense hurricanes. It is now better than ever and is even home to the island's tallest water slide. As you enter the park, there is a Starbucks and a cacao crafting shop. I had to get my favourite green tea frappe to start my fun day.

As you make your way down the promenade of specialty shops, it leads you to the ticket office and entrance. There are several packages available to suit everyone's budget and needs. As I grew up with my younger brother Scott being wheelchair bound, I always look out for facilities for people with special needs. This park passes with flying colours, there are ramps everywhere and even beach wheelchairs available.

The first thing we wanted to do was find a lovely shady spot to be our base for the day. Most people want to be in the sunniest spot but with my fair skin, I get burnt far too easily. There are tables with chairs and beach loungers lining the beach front. If you are feeling particularly fancy, there are even poolside cabanas available for hire. If you are worried about your belongings getting stolen, you can hire a secure locker for the day.

Once we had our spot secured, it was time to get stuck into some cold drinks. The beach bar had everything from local beers to fruity cocktails. If you have children with you, there is no need to worry, there are slushie machines as well. Dependent upon the package you purchased, you may even have unlimited food and drinks. After a drink or two, I was ready for some fun.

One of the best things about Playa Mia is their inflatable obstacle course floating out in the ocean. This is your chance to feel like you are on the television show wipeout. It is almost as fun to watch your friends fall off as it is to try it out yourself. This alone will soak up hours of entertainment. Personally I enjoy being in the ocean more than I do a swimming pool. There is no need to fret for those of you who rather pass on the ocean. Playa Mia has several swimming pools suitable for all ages.

The park features several pools designed especially for children. They are incorporated into a water zone so to speak. It has mini slides, water seesaws, fountains and drenching overflow buckets. If your little ones are brave enough, there is the large water slides to enjoy as well. The children's water zone is adjacent to the Jacuzzi, so if you want to relax and still keep an eye on the kids, this is the perfect way to do so.

After all the fun and jumping around, it was safe to say that we had built up quite the appetite. Playa Mia offers a sensational spread of fresh food to suit every dietary need. I must of had at least 3 plates of freshly cut papaya, it was divine. I am a sucker for fresh fruit. The spread had everything from traditional Mexican cuisine to a western variety. They even have a tasting bar where you can sample specialties made fresh by the in-house chef.

Now that we have bellies full of delicious food, it was time to work it off with some water sports. Wave-runners, or as I call them jet-skis are available for hire. I have always been competitive and won't let anyone beat me in a race. Pushing my jet-ski as fast as it would go bouncing through the waves. I am certain that my screams could be heard from miles around. Two people can fit on each jet-ski, I had one to myself of course. These were modern, high quality jet-skis with a lot of horse-power. The great part about hiring from Playa Mia is the large area that you can bounce out into the ocean. When you set out, it really is just you and the open water, it's an incredible sense of freedom.

Playa Mia is amazing in the way that it is able to incorporate everything for everyone. It is the perfect vacation destination for families with young children, people with special needs, groups of friends, adrenaline seekers and romantic couples. This achievement in itself is very impressive.

While you are riding the jet-ski, you are too busy having fun to realize how much of a workout your muscles are getting. Let me tell you, I was sore the next day but it was worth it. Speaking of being sore, Playa Mia offers several different places to get a massage. You can get a massage by the pool or on the beach itself. If you want a relaxing experience and want to try something new, they also offer a fish therapy spa. During fish therapy , you immerse your feet into a tank of water and the fish eat your dead skin. I cannot say from experience as I have never had it done. However, friends of mine love it.

After a full day of sun, fun and relaxation, a browse of the beach side shop was just what I needed. Playa Mia is an amazing place, of all the great aspects of the park, my favourite has to be its commitment to conservation and the environment. Cozumel is surrounded by a delicate Eco-system and it has to be protected so that the generations that come after us can enjoy its beauty as well. I hope you have enjoyed my blog on Playa Mia Grand Beach Park, Mexico, until next time Vegoutt everybody!!
