Hertog Inn and a little out

avatar

In a near escape from what would have been suffering enjoying another half good burger at the restaurant of the hotel that boasts on its website "the most recommended by serial killer truckers in Europe", I instead enjoyed dinner at the Herzog Inn cafe with two colleagues. One of them is a beer drinker who likes to play with a beer-drinking-app (the app doesn't drink) and was more impressed with the range than an excitable @meesterboom is with the Bear-Man's flirtatious advances after popping a Viagra. He downed a few of what the app described as the best beers in the world, or at least the most expensive by the looks. I had a Winter beer, which was bit sweet for me, but as a wine drinker who doesn't like beer - passable.

This place is in the middle of nowhere it would seem, but since my colleagues have a rental car, we headed there after the training day and if you look closely in the picture below, you will see that they have beer on tap. On the left-hand side of the shot you can see a brown pipe that runs along the roof, and on the right-hand outside the windows you can see a large black pipe - that is connected to the brewery across the road.

It was what I would call, well-planned cozy in the bar with a mix of typical beer-like decor, fireplaces, various signage decorating the walls, beer mugs hanging from the ceiling, crates and then some more modern elements integrated in, some hard-lined chandelier with LEDs changing color and some glass panels in the floor that gave a peak down into their well-stocked cellars. The bartender was overly friendly and did something I have never seen before and physically shook the composure of my colleagues, he looked at the phone screen and saw the app, then proceeded to take the phone out of the hands and search for something in the app - all without asking - it was weird.

Talking of weird, I think this is what Boom's wet dream might look like - dusty.

While the menu was in Netherlanderish only, I found something that I could read, Fish & Chips. It was really good, but I am looking forward to having something a bit fresher in the near future as my stomach is not able to handle all of this grease. it seems that in this part of the country, fresh food is rationed and cannot take up more than 10% of the plate area.

We sat and talked for a few hours there about the day a bit, but mostly about business, then life, then the banking system and the failures of it. Just for a change. It is nice to travel with colleagues as the company is welcome, but at the same time it leaves very little space for free time, and after a day of talking for nearly 10 hours in what can be difficult discussions at times, the mental rest is welcome. Luckily though, they gave me a ride back to my hotel where I am able to have that thinking space to contemplate whether this is the night I will be gruesomely murdered in my sleep by a grudge-carrying hooker with dyslexia, who got the wrong room.

Just make sure the locks are on and you should be fine :)

I had to say 'no' to beer tonight after picking up the cans and deciding a gym session was the wiser option. If I was out with colleagues in a new place though there would have been no other option.

Food served with paper to soak the grease up - you don't see that everyday!?

It was grease paper and didn't soak crap, but it was a decent meal tbh.

I am not sure what the locks are like when the key is a literal punch card with holes in it...

You made a wise choice and I definitely have to hit the gym after this week.

Oh, my!! Tell me more about this grudge-carrying hooker with dyslexia! She sounds almost as interesting as Boom's friends.

Friendly chap, wasn't he? Taking your phone and making himself at home.

I hear you. I don't always want to spend the entire night with the same people I spent the day with haggling over work.

As an aside, it looks like an interesting place, if they serve more than grease.

No doubt by morning she will have cracked my password and be posting sa em. ;D

It was strange, but he was also very friendly and chatty and didn't mind having a conversation. Overall, the slight was likely accepted by my colleague, even though for a Finn that is really pushing social boundaries.

It looks like it would be great on a weekend night with friends, and fewer colleagues.

Oh!! My! Well, we will keep the radar on you, just in case.

I just got back from a month away and I need to hit more than the gym... eating all your meals out is a killer. Even their salads have four times the fat that mine do that I make.

Have fun and throw down a few wines for me, dash the beer.

As soon as I got back to the hotel, I grabbed a gloss of red ;)

I can see boom contemplating how to get pipes directly from the brewery to his house. That is an unusual set up for sure and it is good to get out as you are becoming well travelled these days.

I knew I couldn’t be the only one to notice that about boomy and bear man 🤣

Sounds like a nice dinner (snatched phone notwithstanding, was he looking for a beer sample to give your friend?) and an interesting place. I know a few people that wouldn’t mind a direct pipe to a brewery 😆
